Hi Kevin - we really enjoyed your approach and your teaching. I found this video and shared it with my daughter who is taking A&P for physical therapists in college. She thinks your video is fantastic.

The correct pronunciation of "foramen" is "for-A-men" with "a" being a long "a" and with emphasis on the second syllable (the "a"). The correct pronunciation for "ramus" is "RAY-mus" with the "a" being a long "a."

Jerry, thanks for an opportunity to address "correctness" in pronunciation. Pronunciations vary among dialects, as reflected in Oxford Eng. Dict.and most Latin dialects, which pronounce foramen as FOR-ah-men. Many (not all) anatomists instead say fo-RAY-men. I address such variations in Pt.2 of the video and in my term lists. It's important to be flexible with pronunciation, because in professional life we hear variations, which are OK, even "correct," and we need to cope with that.

I tend to default to Latin pronunciations without thinking because I learned Latin before I learned anatomy. Some scientists hold that Latin pronunciation should be primary. Others disagree, sometimes with good reason. That's life, I'm afraid. Or at least, that's spoken language.

thanks for the video.my question is: how do we spell the numbers in bone names? e.g: 4th left rib in latin? os costa "quattuor"? sinister.
@kevintpatton6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. I use the English forms (based on Latin). There, one usually uses an Arabic numeral as in "left rib 4" or "4th left rib" If one is going completely Latin, then I'm guessing it's "rib IV sinister" but it's only a guess, since I don't operate in that system.

I should clarify that some Latin dialects say foh-RAH-men. So now we have a third choice I guess! :-)
