I love how Peter emphasizes the real BASICS. Scales, scales, scales (and of course, so much more). How much they and their cousins, arpeggios can also bring out greater intonation, attack, sound quality, and so much more. We must devote ourselves and be sure to cover the entire set. I deem this far more valuable than long tone work. Of course one must pay attention not only to getting the note of the scale out, but HOW IT SOUNDS overall. Lately I have been doing the scales in multiple versions using so-called "alternate positions" in or more runs, which I seek to match to the other "main" set of positions. I feel this helps equalize the sound in longer positions and helps with getting the "throw" of the slide to the right place as quick as possible.

I heard Peter performing at the Jeju International Brass Festival. Not only does he play exceptionally well, but I also appreciate what he represents for the entire brass community. The duo with Constanze (pianist) and the repertoire were amazing. Fantastic chamber music and artistry.
