Psalm 137 1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. 2 There on the poplars we hung our harps, 3 for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” 4 How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land? 5 If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. 6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.

@Peter Evans . This recording is analogue. Digita recording of music began in the midst 70's with classical music , made by Philips and Deutsche Gramophon . In the end if 70's, Giorgio Moroder made the first digital recording for an album, the mane is E=MC². But the first album totally in digital recording was The Visitors, the last album of ABBA. It's realized for a "new" technology called compact disc. An analogue recording if well done can be so good than a digital recording, but to show their sound quality depends of the transcript to digital.

It's based on the bible. It's about Israel being beaten by Babylon. Psalm 137:1 KING JAMES VERSION By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. {137:2} We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. {137:3} For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. {137:4} How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land? {137:5} If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. {137:6} If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy. {137:7} Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof. {137:8} O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. {137:9} Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

A beautiful, uplifting song. The warm applause at the beginning tells you how already appreciative of the song the audience was. What I recall about the song is that in 1978/79 it was played a few times at friends’ birthday parties (as pop music ideal for nine and ten-year-olds) as well as at some social events like car boot sales. It’s just so cheery. But folk back then got the biblical references. And even today this song is an antidote to the grimness that’s so pervasive in popular entertainment today.

LYRICS: By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down Yeah, we wept, when we remembered Zion By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down Yeah, we wept, when we remembered Zion There the wicked Carried us away in captivity Required from us a song Now how shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? There the wicked Carried us away in captivity Requiring of us a song Now how shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Let the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart Be acceptable in thy sight here tonight Let the words of our mouth and the meditation of our hearts Be acceptable in thy sight here tonight By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down Yeah, we wept, when we remembered Zion By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down Yeah, we wept, when we remembered Zion By the rivers of Babylon (dark tears of Babylon) There we sat down (you got to sing a song) Yeah, we wept (sing a song of love) When we remembered Zion (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah) By the rivers of Babylon (rough bits of Babylon) There we sat down (you hear the people cry) Yeah, we wept (they need their God) When we remembered Zion (ooh, have the power) By the rivers of Babylon (oh yeah yeah), there we sat down (yeah, yeah)

More precisely ~587 B.C. See Book of Jeremiah. Composition of the Psalms of course began with King David 1000 B.C. but Psalm 137 was rightly added to the liturgical hymnody.

When I was a little kid in Nigeria in the late 90s my parents used to play this song all the time and I would hear it every Sunday on the radio😌😌 It was only when I got older that I realized it was from the book of Psalms and based on actual history of the Jews and their enslavement by the Babylonians.
