Maybe I'm aging myself, but when I think of bongo drums, I think of that basic counterculture Beatnik bongo sound in the 1950's and early 1960's coffeehouses (along with the existential poetry readings).

About the tuning, I bought a set of LP bongo whose macho is only 6 1/4 inch. I am disappointed because the sound is too low and has nothing to do with its traditional crystalline sound, I dare not adjust it higher. I conclude that it is preferable to pay a little more and choose a larger diameter for both drums Ditto for the hembra.

This style tightener is tunable. Some bongos will strip the tighteners?

Cheep ones may end up with stripped threads or bent rims. Go for high-quality if possible.

For me, a beginner in playing bongo, tuning this instrument is the most difficult thing. I 've used a Meanil bongo and tried to tune the hebra to have the sound as high as that of the famous bongoceros. Afraid of breaking the head of bongo, I tuned it gradually, day by day, just a little everyday. But, after doing this in a month, the hebra head was torm. Now I'm looking for the new one, but I'm not sure about tuning it in the right way. In an earlier clip, you told not to be afraid when hearing cracking sounds while tuning bongos. But, you see, the hebra head was torn no matter how careful I' was. So. please tell me what can I do to have the right sound without breaking the hebra head. Do you think the quality of the head is the matter? But Meinil is a famous brand, as I know.

Sorry to hear about the broken head. Bongo heads will break when you crank them up. It's part of the package. That being said, try to find a head that is on the thick side. Tuning it up to play and down a little when finished. A lot of heads will break when sitting around after playing, so tune down a little when finished. Hope this helps.

check the wood of the top ring of the bongo, if it is a little rough it can damage the head. You have to remove the head and sand a bit the wood sometimes, even in meinl bongos or any other brand.

I just had the exact same experience with a cheap set of Pyle bongos. My granddaughter pointed to the bongo and asked, "grandpa, what happened to your bongos?" Upon inspection, I saw that the hembra head was broken, coincidentally enough right after really tuning it up a couple days prior. So, I've purchased a very nice Pearl bongos set AND a three year wall to wall service plan from Guitar Center. I'm also not going to crank them up as tight. It sounds like this is the nature of the beast regardless of what brand you're playing on; wish I read this post sooner!!!

Ah, i' got a mistake when writting the comment below. I want to talk about the macho, not hebra. My macho head was torn, not the hebra. I'm sorry.
