Welcome to the online forum “Bongto: The Transfer of Leyte’s Center from Carigara to Tacloban in the 19th Century.” Presented by the UP Tacloban - Leyte Samar Heritage Center (LSHC), the forum explores the idea of “bongto” through a discussion of the transfer of the center of Leyte from Carigara to Tacloban and the formation of new towns in the island in the 19th century.
The forum features historian Dr. Ros A. Costelo of UP Diliman’s Department of History who recently graduated with a doctorate degree in Contemporary History from the prestigious Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain and received the mark of sobresaliente cum laude, the highest possible recognition that can be conferred by the Spanish educational system. The forum also includes two reactors who are prominent scholars and leaders in their respective fields in the region: historian Dr. Rolando O. Borrinaga of UP Manila - School of Health Sciences in Palo and Msgr. Gilbert G. Urbina, Chair of the Worship Commission of the Archdiocese of Palo, Leyte. And joining the conversation is sociologist Prof. Dakila Kim P. Yee of UP Tacloban's Division of Social Sciences.
"Bongto" is an episode in Bátì UP Tacloban’s Kaagi, Kabilin, Kultura (History, Heritage, Culture) Conversation Series. Part of LSHC’s 26th anniversary celebration with the theme “Pórta: Pathways to Promoting Cultural, Historical, and Environmental Awareness in Eastern Visayas,” it aims to encourage institutions, educators, and students in the region to engage in the study of local histories.
