The number one cause of beginners killing their bonsai (not a houseplant) is due to underwatering, not overwatering. This video illustrates that if you have a decent soil mix with good drainage, you can be aggressive on watering without worrying about root rot. I will post a new video for watering to illustrate why this is important.

Bonsai substrate is a highly contested subject amongst Bonsai enthusiasts. But it would be nice to show the difference between good and bad substrate. I think he means well, just not sure if he is trying to sell people on these little trees as Bonsai.

It is actually normal and you could do it any plant because the plant roots will absorb the water it needs and if the water is not going down then that means the ether the tree doesn’t need water or it already took enough water you should probably leave it there for 5 or more minutes 👍

My question is and it’s a two part question should I water it again lol and allow water to come out the bottom obviously because you gave it a lot of water and my other question is I transplanted my bonsai into a new banzai pot, I’ve read that it should stay in the shade after transplant for a period of time is this true and if so how long?

Hi there, I’ve had a juniper bonsai for about 4 months already and I had gone on a trip for a week about 2 weeks ago. When I had come back, I realized I had left my bonsai at my window sill (it’s currently winter where I am and my room gets pretty cold) and my bonsai seemed dried out. The top of the tree is yellow-ish green and the rest are a lighter green but the light green parts fall off whenever something touches it even the lightest amount of force. Do I still have a chance of recovery? If so any tips? What should I do?

@easternleaf11 жыл бұрын
Hi Katherine. Good bonsai soil will always have good drainage. It's unlikely that you will drown your bonsai tree if the soil is good. Most beginners will usually kill their tree by underwatering rather than overwatering. As for letting it drain, typically we let our trees drain under filtered sunlight where they spend most of their time. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.

The best soil for Bonsai is a fast, well draining soil. If you HAVE this kind of soil, the water passes through quickly, and moisture is retained by the aggregate in the soil. ( like Akadama for instance ). This means that you can not really over water it, because the water passes through quickly, and doesnt "stand" around the roots, which causes all kinds of problems. If your soil is very slow draining, or holds a lot of water, yes, you can over water. But because most good quality soil drains very quickly, you can soak the tree to make sure the entire pot gets watered, without worrying about over watering. Some areas have very dry conditions, so you would add a bit more organic material to the soil to hold slightly more water, OR water more then once a day. Other areas are very humid and get more rain on a constant basis, and you would want less organic material in your soil.

My hopes are to get this make this a show piece someday. He had a really cool one "the best" on the top of his pyramid stand that was 30 years old he said. It said not for sale but I asked him what it would cost and he said $1500. That is so awesome. If I was rich I would have bought it.

@stevenfortier64365 жыл бұрын
Shrimp Y, you can speed up the process by taking a cutting from a tree. A new shoot on a tree in the Spring time is best. Basically cut a new growth from a tree in spring and plant it keeping it moist to get roots to form. It's not the easiest thing to do but I am going to try it and see if I can get one to take this spring.
