I am so glad to help! I hope to do a video of repotting the "mother" tree this spring, if time allows. One piece of advice I can't remember if I said in this video... for fertilising Sageretia use about half or one third the concentration of that it says on the fertiliser bottle (=much more water diluted). Sageretia suffer with higher concentrations, and they thrive with even tiny amounts. Enjoy your mini tree!

Hi Dave! I know I might be a little late to make a comment on this video, but I would like to ask you a question. I was given a Sageretia about 3 months ago, and it's growing really strong! I leave near Valencia and have it outside, but it is never exposed to full sunlight. I have read that direct sunlight is not that good for this species. When outside, do you keep your Sagaretias exposed to the sun or are they in the shade? Also, I would like you to know that mine was growing really well during the spring, but then a couple of gloomy, colder weeks passed by, and the new leaves got yellow and have fallen by now. I think that that might have happened due to some "overwatering". I know there's no such thing, but this poor tree is in really bad soil (commercial nursery soil), and it might have had too much water during those days. Now it's growing really strong again, with red leaves at the tips. So I was wondering if now that it is stronger, putting it in the sun would be a good idea. Thank you very much! I love your calm and really well-explained videos!

Thanks Jaume! You're right that it wasn't overwatering that caused the new leaves to die, but yes perhaps bad soil clogging up the drainage and causing root damage. Maybe. The definitive clue is: did the pot smell underneath? When you get root rot due to stagnating water in the soil, it literally smells putrid. So it could have been that, or, it could have been too much fertilizer? Alternatively it could have been an insecticide sprayed nearby that could have reached the leaves? Or maybe Scale (cochinillas) - these keep coming back to my sageretias and I have to keep removing them once or twice a year. I doubt that's the case with your tree because it tends to affect the older leaves nore than the newer leaves. To answer your question, when they are outside over summer I keep them under a 50% shade cloth from June through to mid September. I do like sageretia but as you know the weather here in Britain isn't the best to keep them, unless you have facilities to keep them in a warm environment during the winter. I have had a couple but they died suddenly after being what I thought was very healthy. I gave up and have never had one since. Your video has offered some explanation as to why mine died, perhaps the greenhouse didn't offer the amount of protection required. Thanks for the information. A great vide.

Thanks Mick. There are a couple of indoor bonsai species that are even more sensitive than Sageretia, which are Serissa Foetida and Carmona. One trick I do with all of these to keep them healthy in the dry indoor air: put a plastic bag over them while the heating is on. It keeps them in near 100% humidity and all these species love it. On the other hand, if you want a more robust species that you don't have to keep worrying about (apart from watering and pruning), I would recommend ficus retusa or f.microcarpa. I'll do another video sometime this year on indoor bonsai and particularly sageretia.

Thanks Mat, really appreciate your encouraging words! a famous bonsai youtuber here in Spain advises to not get Sageretia, and I have heard others advise against them too, but it really annoys me because these are one of the best species for small bonsai as long as treat them right. I suspect it's because they didn't ever understand the Sageretia can only take like half the fertilizer of any other tree, and the trunk is always quite thin so I suspect a lot of people over-fertilize them in attempt to grow faster. Sageretia get fertilizer-burn if you supply as much as the fert instructions tell you. Thanks again and enjoy your tree! 🌱🌿🌳

What are the wires you are using? Am from Belgium and didn’t understand it well, i just got one today and so am trying to learn how to take care of mine, and would love for the little branches to become like yours growing sideways instead lf straigth up

They are mostly 1mm aluminium wires. You can get them from most garden centres. But careful! The wire can "bite" in to the bark on these if you leave it on too long, that's why I added the plastic sleeves to the wires to prevent them from digging into the bark.

Hi, keep the holes closed in winter. Only open the holes if the temperature inside the box gets too hot, say 35°c or 95°f. The idea is to keep the humidity high inside and slightly warm, but not too hot.

Cut and grow, for defo bro! Sageretia bark scars easily and does not forgive the scars even after many years. The only wiring I do is guy-wiring to pull branches down, using a thick rubber sheath to protect the bark. HTH.

I brought mine indoor when outdoor temperatures hit 50F. I have kept them near a south facing window. A few days later, I noticed many of the leaves drying out, particularly at the end of the branches and especially the branches I’m growing out. Any idea what could be causing this? Is it not enough water? Is the sunlight passing through the glass window burning the leaves?

It could be a few possible causes. I have seen Sageretia leaves go dry and then die like that 4-8 days after a "normal" dose of bonsai fertiliser. I now use half the concentration for my sageretias compared to all the other species. (But don't fertilize now at all until you see it recovering, with plenty of new shoots). Another possibility is the tree is not yet accustomed to the dry air indoors, (is it very humid outdoors where you live?) if this is the case, keep watering and spray it with water a few times a day until it recovers. I suspect it's just not enough water. I have several tiny ones in a sunny south facing window all year and they don't get burnt by the sun. I water them loads, and only spray the ones that appear to have suffered dryness. Another problem I have seen on mine is the tiny scale insects, they really infest these Sageretia trees and it's very difficult to get rid of them indoors. Outside, they all get eaten by ladybirds and other tiny beetles etc. The scale insects are disgusting little creatures and they just suck the life out of a leaf till it dries and dies. You might need to look closely on the underside of your leaves. If there's no scale, my guess is it needs more regular watering. Good luck!

Hi, yes the best way is to attach the wires to other wires under rhe pot, wires that you feed through the drainage holes. Hei. Great video. I have always liked these trees, i have a couple them. But i have a issue i cant find a answer too. The trees are very healthy, they stay under growlight in the winter and the temp never goes under 20 Celsius. The issue i have is water on leafs. As soon as i spray the tree with water, some white dust starts to form on some leafs and the leafs dies. If i stopp sparying the leafs, the problem goes away. Do you know what the issue can be? Have you ever experienced this?

Hei Øistein, thanks! There are two possible explanations for your white powder: 1. Mildew- a fungal infection, or 2. Mealybugs. Try a mild fungicide apt for mildew, that will show you if its mildew and remove it. Mealybugs tend to hide under leaves at the base and on secluded parts of branches, and leave a more waxy powder wherever are. Sageretia get problems with insect infestations indoors. Make sure to leave them outdoors every summer as long as the nighttime temperatures stay above 10°, so then other larger insects like ladybirds will feast on the mealybugs and scale on your trees. I guess, from your description it's probably mildew. Some treatments cause Sageretia to throw off a load of leaves... make sure to dispose of those carefully so the spores don't infect other trees or plants. And the tree should bud back fine again with your growlight. All the best! 😊👍🏻

Thanks Adrian! Here's the sageretia now: flic.kr/p/2o1SM63 (i.e. 2 years after the sageretia video). You can see how I deal with the moss. I remove the moss from the trunk base and surface roots, a little distance around. Then I can see when that soil and the surface roots are becoming dry. flic.kr/p/2o1Vfqt Also, you don't want moss growing on the trunk base and surface roots, because it will keep the bark wet and then the bark won't age like a natural looking tree. Apart from that I have found sageretias like to be watered more than most trees, so I never let them dry out. Maybe it's because sageretias are really a vine-like grower, more than they are trees. That's why it is very rare to see a Sageretia with a very thick trunk. Here's another small one that I completely removed the moss because it was always so wet that it actually grew some green mold on top of the moss: flic.kr/p/2o1YgdM So although moss can look nice, sometimes our trees are better without it!

And one more comment: I have never killed a tree in granular bonsai soil by overwatering it. I have lost plenty of trees by drought and underwatering. So if in doubt, don't leave it a day ... just water it!!

Yes you've kinda answered the question for yourself! when you see the wire starting to dig into the bark, it's already a bit late, because that spiral bite mark can stay visible for a few years unfortunately. Don't worry, we've all done it. Carefully use a wire cutter to remove the wire in small pieces to avoid any further damage to the bark. If it's not yet in its "final" shape, you can always rewire it with fresh wire, (not on the same spiral path) and watch closely to remove the wire bites again.

@@ngekseng I just took a look. It looks fine. But yes, let it leaf out a lot more and grow a bit bushy then decide in mid-to-late spring if it needs pruning back. Make sure it gets a lot of light, preferably sunlight if possible. Let the lower branches grow much longer to try and get the lower trunk fatter over time.

What repotting mix are you using for the sageretia theezans? I’ve recently received one that was kept indoors & noticed a white fuzzy mould on the roots/soil. I’ve been advised this might be due to the soil retaining too much moisture & was wondering what type is ideal to replace it with?

In this video I add the soil mix approximately 50% akadama and 50% crushed pine bark all seived to approximately 2-3 mm granule size, to get rid of the dust so there is always good drainage, and to get rid of the bigger chunks of bark that are too big for a small pot. Thanks Steven! Your tree looks great. I have a video on pruning in which I suggest we should not prune trees in spring or autumn. But that was for outdoor trees, whereas the Sageretia is a tropical species, an indoor tree (at least indoors from october through to april or may, unless you live in a tropical climate). Tropical trees can be pruned any time of year. BUT, looking at your sagaretia, I would recommend you repot it now and leave the pruning for a couple of months. I can't see under the soil but there is a good chance it's becoming potbound under there. Use a granular soil like akadama 3mm granules approx, and consider getting a slightly bigger bonsai pot (though not strictly necessary). Sieve out the dust from your new soil before the repot, because bonsai trees thrive much better with good drainage and some tiny gaps between the granules. After you repot, keep it humid for a few days, e.g. put a clear plastic bag over it with a spray of water inside. Again, not strictly necessary but will help save most of the foliage. Some of the older leaves and yellow leaves will drop whatever you do. Even if ALL the leaves drop it will be ok as long as it keeps getting bright light and humidity. Absolutely zero fertilizer now until at least 6-8 weeks after the repot. Fert won't help, in fact it will jeopardise the tree's recovery from root pruning. Use water only. @@stevenvitali7404 no probs, leave it a couple of months before repotting, when it has pushed out another flush of leaves and after they have turned from red to green. Same recommendations for repotting (soil, humidity etc.) and the warmer it is in your home the more important to keep it humid for a few days after repotting. 🌳👍🏻

@@stevenvitali7404 2 litres will be fine for that size pot, 3-5mm akadama perfect. When potting you don't fill the soil up to the brim of the pot; leave a few millimetres. This is partly because when you water you don't want the water to spill down the outside of the pot, but also because over the next year as the roots regrow, the whole root system will gradually push outwards and upwards, so better to leave the space for that now. I definitely will make more Sageretia videos, the one thing I can't promise is when it will be.... yes you can keep pruning to 2 or 3 leaves all year round as long as it's indoors and in a window with a lot of light. Also recommend a double-glazed window if you live in a cold winter area, so the temperature of the tree should never drop lower than 10°c for this species. So yes, you can keep pruning, even monthly if you want, but in order to gain more energy and grow stronger, it is advisable to let it grow out more each time before pruning. Perhaps the ideal for Sageretia is once every 3-4 months. HTH

I have learnt "tge hard way" 😂 One extra piece of advice, for some reason they don't like as much fertilizer as most other trees-- they seem to lose leaves too easily if you over-fertilize them. So for the Sageretias I use 50% the amount that's on the fert instructions (or more accurately, I dilute it with double the amount of water).

Awesome content! One small critique on your video production: personally I think the music at times was too loud. I like the music, but it sometimes overwhelmed your voice.

Thanks! You're completely right. The music was way too loud. This was the first video that I talked in... before I had decent editing software. I'd be interested to know if you see my recent videos, is thw music a more acceptable level that lets you hear what I'm saying throughout?? Thanks again for your great feedback.

I recommend sign up for a free account on Flickr because you have up to 1000 photos online and it's a great way to keep track of progress on your trees. You can create an album for each tree if you want. If you decide to, let me know your Flickr ID and I'll connect on Flickr. Cheers

Great video, thank you. One small suggestion, your background music is very loud in comparison to your voice, so I keep missing bits of what you're saying. Especially wearing earphones which I often do. Cheers.

Thanks Carlos! Yes I completely agree, in this video my music was too loud and and my voice too quiet. In my defence, this was the first ever video I talked in, and I've thankfully learnt a lot since then! I would be very interested to hear your opinion on my most recent videos - they also have music, but I hope the music doesn't overwhelm or detract from my talking. Thanks again for your suggestion!

Thank you Yixuan Li! Actually this was just my 6th video and the first time I spoke in a video 😳 in my more recent videos I made the music quieter when I'm talking.
