I am amazed at the fast growth you have in your country. When you talk about hunters, are they people who will collect bonsai material for you, from people removing unwanted trees, or do they go looking for trees in the wild / mountains etc?

Leonard van der Merwe Yes the hunters are people who go around looking for unwanted trees, like near road expansions, constructions and yes also in mountains and seashores. This Pemphis you are seeing in this video though is now classified associate mangrove, you need to have a permit from our Department of Natural Resource to collect that, and only those which can be hit by future construction or developments are allowed to be collected otherwise it is illegal. Yes, its hot and humid here is the Philippines and favors growth of this Pemphises.

good day, i need help on my two newly collected bantigue, a few days after potting, they grew shoots but the small shoots eventually died, a friend told me to put plastic cover to prevent moisture from escaping... how do you go about doing that?did you do that in this pemphis in the video?

Putting plastic cover to prevent moisture loss is a usual practice when rooting materials. But in my case I do not use this practice instead I place my materials in complete shade to prevent moisture loss. There are other factors of success in rooting materials. Although moisture loss is number 1 and it's opposite which is dehydration., the next key thing is aeration. that is why we need coarse soil and large drainage holes. Air movement within the environment (also aid aeration) is a factor as well. Plastic cover does not have this advantage that is why I don't use this practice. If there were shoots already growing and eventually died, the tree has used up it's residual or reserved energy already to create new roots and shoots and chances are the tree will die. Check which factor cause the death of your tree based on the factors I wrote, my guess is that you have placed the materials out in the sun too early and the tree got dehydrated even if you have watered them diligently. the roots may not have been ready yet to absorb moisture. Allow shoots (growth) to mature a bit (brown coloring of the twigs about 2 to 3 inches in height) before easing them out to sun.

Thank you for the reply Sir! i think the reason may have been the fact that the "amihan" started and the air went sort of dry. Also I noticed just today that the spot where I placed one of the phempises now gets afternoon sun. One of them is dead now. The one i took out of the afternoon sun i think has hope of being revived. Sir, do you think i should do away with the plastic? for sure it didn't help the one that died. but right now it's really hot during the day, and the plants i'm rooting are in the garage, and it's hot even if it's shady.

sir do you use any rooting hormone for this? and what did you use as rooting medium? thanks i'll appreciate your help in this..

For rooting newly collected materials, rooting hormone is always better than none either powder form or liquid as I am using. I use pure river sand as my medium. I wash and sieve to two sizes the 1/4 inch as drainage layer and the finer ones as main and top medium. Put them in full shade not just under a large tree. for about 3 to 4 months. When shoots starts to brown at its base then you can start to ease them to sun. River sand can get really hot in full sun you need to mulch. I temporarily use old cloth to keep the soil moist and protected from heat.
