Not sure I will get an answer for this but why are the plants grown in what looks like to be a very water absorbent material (soil) and then many are placed into "Bonzai Soil" that is so free-draining? Why are the plants, when transferred to a new pot, not placed into a similar growing medium? I never understood this. All the JBPs I get from the nursery, many being around 12-inches tall, are all grown in more of a water-retaining material than a free-draining material like "Bonzai Soil".
@bonsaiempire
@bonsaiempire Жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas! That has a lot to do with the stage of development. Young trees kept in big nurseries are planted in soils that retain lots of water and nutrients to maximize growth. Once we bonsai people work on the trees and plant them in small pots, our goals change from maximum growth to sustaining long term health. So thats why we placed the pine in bonsai substrate, which is entirely, or almost entirely, inorganic.

Its doing well, we'll do an update soon! And to me its not scary, but if you're starting out just make sure to do less at a time. So repot in early spring, and prune in fall for example. By spreading out work you'll make sure to safeguard the tree's health!

i've always heard that in order to grow a bonsai from seed, you need to place it initially in open soil so that the trunk is able to become thic, then slowly you'll have to cut the apex till you reach a desirable height, however here, it seems to me the apex had never been cut before, and i'm assuming that small pot is where that pine was growing all its life, yet for its young age the trunk was nicely thic, how do you do that?

Then dont cut them - plant health comes first. But three branches from one spot eventually will thicken that part on the trunk, so Id remove at least one when the tree is strong.

How do you keep a sapling so short? I have germinated a pine seed, and it's currently about 10cm tall. How do I keep it short and when do I start training it? Do you have any tips or book reccomendations?
@joemerino3243
@joemerino3243 2 жыл бұрын
These trees have the top cut off several times to achieve this short, thick look.
@PriyaPans
@PriyaPans 2 жыл бұрын
@@joemerino3243 but is that possible with pines? Some pine trees can only grow from some apexes of branches I think I read somewhere. So then then when's are how's of which branches becomes tricky. Do you know any more about this?
@joemerino3243
@joemerino3243 2 жыл бұрын
@@PriyaPans All plants grow from tiny structures called _meristems_ which are, in most species, found at the tips of roots and branches. Most plants, will, to some degree or another, favor the meristem at the top of the plant for growth. When you cut the top meristem off, other meristems will wake up and grow more. I don't know about all pines everywhere, and I don't use Japanese pines. I just use the pines that live where I live. They are strong here and can bear extensive pruning and candling. Those Japanese pines look absolutely beautiful, but the local pines are adapted to the local climate and also I can have as many as I want to experiment with for free. You'll have a lot more fun with bonsai if you have several trees to experiment with and make mistakes on than if you are trying to become a bonsai master from being a novice working on a single tree.
@PriyaPans
@PriyaPans 2 жыл бұрын
@@joemerino3243 thank you so much for such a wonderful explanation! I definitely want to give this all a go. I have a small sapling growing since April 2021, and then in autumn this year o also planted a LOT more seeds, so I'm waiting for then to germinate once the cold period is finished. Hopefully in a few years I'll be able to practise and learn from these pruning principles. Thanks again for the info!
