This is amazing. "The first step to understanding bonsai is understand horticulture" never really hit home until seeing this.

Conversely you might try using weeping tile tubing for the next time you try it.
@Bonsaify29 күн бұрын
If you mean the round tubing that's flexible - I have tried it and it was a disaster. It seems that when you put it vertically, the water runs down the spiral ridges...which means that the roots go there also. So you end up with roots that look like a slinky. And if you wait too long they're nearly impossible to get out of the tubing without destroying the roots. Even one year later they were very hard to separate without the roots getting a lot of damage.
@joshchang_bonsai29 күн бұрын
oh no, I didn’t expect that to be the case! The hunt continues for a good tubing/ training scaffolding.

I see a couple of comments about the tree pots and possible substitutions. Schedule 40 pvc pipe comes in many diameters, you can use any length and it’s easily purchased. Cut the tube to length and then again in half lengthwise. Put the 2 halves back together using a couple of radiator hose clamps. This will allow for easy removal with no root damage and you can reuse it with no waste.
@Bonsaify25 күн бұрын
I had considered that. But often I find I want to expose the roots a few inches at a time, and the pipes would be hard to use in that way. I may try them. But I wonder if you've considered that the pipe has to be sitting on a larger container below. The roots would either have to be combed out to fit through the pipe for removal, or you'd have to shove the foliage down through the pipe. As much as I'd like to re-use materials in these cases, I'm not sure this would work. Perhaps the ideal solution is a pipe cut into two halves prior to use, then clamped together so that it can be removed and reused.
@swimminwitdafishes805924 күн бұрын
@@Bonsaify You missed that part of my explanation. The pipe is cut in half lengthwise. For removal take the hose clamps off and the 2 halves will fall away from the exposed roots.

I love this technique. I wonder how it will work with junipers?
@BonsaifyАй бұрын
It will, but it's quite slow. Most junipers make wood in the roots slower than you might imagine, so plan 5+ years before doing anything with the roots.

@Bonsaify29 күн бұрын
I think many ficus species would work really well. For others, you'd need to test it. In Japan they do it mostly with JBP, trident maple and azaleas.

Do you have to keep the exposed roots wet somehow?
@BonsaifyАй бұрын
If you have roots that are smaller or not woody, then re-planting in a container or otherwise using something to transition the roots to being exposed is a good idea. In this case I'll likely protect them for the coming summer with a towel or some sphagnum while they make bark. But once they're a exposed they don't need to be wet, as they become just like the trunk.
it's not naturalistic accurate just as "modern bonsai style" is, because I thing bonsai is going more to the "artistic expression" rather than natural and you are doing some extreme experiments! good job always a pleasure to watch your videos!
