Awesome video Eric. I do love a nice Zelkova. I have a few growing in the ground and it amazes me how well they grow in my awful British weather. I'd like to know what other styles you feel work for Zelkova instead of broom style? Thank you, Alex

Well, forests work well. It's always stumped me why they only make brooms in Japan. I have a few in the works that are more like bunjin...a graceful slender trunk, or a pair of graceful trunks. I also think it's odd (although maybe fitting) that in Japan they make zelkova forests that look like a clump of brooms rather than a forest that grew together naturally. In addition, a friend of mine has a large informal upright. It's a cool tree. Honestly, I think you can make a lot of styles with them. The growth habit isn't so different from elms that you cant do anything you do with an elm.

You may have explained it in the video and it just went over my head, but what was the purpose of putting the tree into the Anderson flat with the pot instead of just repotting it into the flat?

Less root disturbance to a tree that was already weak. When you have a weak tree, anything you do that is invasive can be a problem. It was also out of season when I noticed the problem. But this also allows you to extract it without a second repotting...

That makes sense to put the whole tree pot and all in a bigger container and I’m going to put this tip away to use sometime when I need it- thanks! My question is, will you be repotting this tree in a few months now that you can see it might get weak again in the current (awesome) pot?

I did have it in a larger terra cotta pot (like same width but three times deeper.). But there are two things going on - one is the size of the container, and the other is the cold temperatures in San Francisco in summer. It has always grown slowly in my yard, but result of which is very fine twigs, which is a good thing. But what I see is that year-after-year of slow growth can weaken the tree to the point where the twigs start to die. So a year in a greenhouse for the summer and the tree is now actually more vigorous than it needs to be - e.g. the shoots get too coarse quickly. So I may repot it into a slightly larger container and then keep it outside in the coming year.

Beautiful!! Is it also one of elm?

They are related to elms, but not in the elm genus. They are in the elm family. Ulmacae.
