Now your old employer needs to start paying more or treating their other employees better or they'll leave too. But then the government comes along and fucks it up. Rather than breaking up monopolies and stopping anti-competitive practices, more often than not, the government ENCOURAGES the growth of monopolies by adding fees, taxes, regulations, or implementing new laws that make it harder for competitors to survive while big businesses bloat in the absence of meaningful competition. It's long overdue for animators and voice actors in Japan to unionize. Corpos won't take care of you and they have shown that by paying slave wages and demanding long hours for decades. The only answer is to gather the workforce together under the same umbrella and negotiate for better terms. Japan just needs to get over it's conformity and start unions in the animation industry.
@mmyr8ado.360 Жыл бұрын
I don't think unionizing would solve the problem in the long term. Negotiating for better deals might be good, but they can also demand exclusivity for certain projects and studios, thus depriving many opportunities for freelance animators. If the demands of the unions were met, unexpected consequences would arise such as lay-offs just to meet the salary increase of the unionists, and would be unfair for those who aren't within the union who have the same job as well. If there are unionists that don't meet the demands of the company but still get paid the same way, it would promote a culture of incompetency within the workplace, which would affect the final product and the projects that they are involved with. Fortunately, Japan has good work ethic for the most part which makes such cases very rare, but it doesn't mean the present work culture justifies it. Ultimately, the problem lies within the work culture and labor practices in Japan, particularly in the entertainment industry. Labor and tax reforms are needed, but it's not enough to change the Japanese work culture, and it would take a while before significant changes are felt if it were ever to happen.

Slaves don't get wages though. A slave is someone who works without any incentives. These people still earn a living, but maybe not the pay that they expect. I get where you're coming from, but unionizing is just not a solution for the long run. Just look at Disney and all the other western companies who are embracing diversity, equity and inclusion, along with unions, look how fast they fall apart. It is not the best way. If Japan wants to get out of this hurdle, overhauling their work culture is the way to go, not some short term unionizing solution.
@graveyardshift6691 Жыл бұрын
Unionizing hasn't worked in the US. It won't work in Japan. The last time the unions went on strike and came back was when we saw the downfall of the entertainment industry. You have 10+ writers for every project and they can't get anything done let alone make anything entertaining 'by committee'. The only things that were good was in the older years where you had 1 primary writer, a back up, and maybe a tetutary if you were rich enough or just thought it necessary. Hell the actors and voice actors are currently on strike and people want them to STAY out of work. The drama is far more entertaining than the actual shows and movies. Unions do not solve anything. The work culture is what needs to change.
@Kiritomens Жыл бұрын
@@coloxrme I'm sorry, but you don't seem to get that the "embracing diversity" has absolutely nothing to do with unions at all lol. That movement came from the Black Rock social awareness credit rating system implemented a few years ago. That system rates companies based on their rating. Meaning if they are not at least on a A rating in that scale they lose a massive amount of investors. The unions in comparison actually saved writers from literal extinction by making the big companies like: Netflix, and Disney. Pay the writers a livable amount, get residuals per stream and that they cannot be used as a one time template only to be replaced by AI in the middle of working on set show. And modern slavery is a thing. Also some slaves did get paid, but you don't get paid enough to ever get freedom. Basically every Japanese work environment talked about in this video. Oppression from above, low wages just enough to live paycheck to paycheck, and no safe way to exit because you could face being blacklisted. That is basically slavery my man. Also often revolutions in work culture are spearheaded or started by unionizing groups facing similar problems. "Less risk taking and creativity" - Let's not forget monopoly. The Japanese anime industry might start getting into the Disney problem where everything becomes formulaic because that formula 'makes the most money' until it doesn't.

By "formulaic" you that 96% of all anime is clished when it comes to characters, plot,voicing and even phrases, etc.? Clishe is why I stopped watching anime. So formulas have been here long before this problem and still are, isekai is an example of formula, imo.
@Wendeta-hq2cp Жыл бұрын
@@rosthariton7930 I disagree. I don't know what kind of anime and manga you've been watching, but I've seen wonderful permutations even within the same genre. Isekai has been getting a bit stale, yes, but for every formulaic Isekai that comes out, there's another Isekai which is pretty fresh. When I mean formulaic, I refer to the fact that Anime might start using a smaller amount of tropes, similarly to how all female character in Disney's films are "quirky" now, despite their backgrounds. Also I don't know what to tell you, but if you're expecting something new and original, then you won't see it in your lifetime. Nobody will. The modern era has left society creativelly bankrupt, meaning that going forward a good story distinguishes itself through good technique and a large variety of tropes used in a manner that makes logical sense for the setting. Villainess Level 99 is a good example. An Isekai where the main character reincarnates as the 'secret boss'. It takes this concept and reveals that this character our protagonist is born as was probably actually a victim of the society she lives in. And she's also a Kuudere, which makes sense seeing as she's barely interacted with anyone and she desires not to be seen as evil or confrontational (leading to her generally controlling her emotions).

@@Wendeta-hq2cp I had been watching anime non stop from 2008 to 2012 approximately without analizing it, more like consuming and after sometime I got bored of repetitions like squeaky female voices that all sounded the same to me, actions of a main character like: "TATAKAI", "I wanna save everyone", " It's time I start fighting seriously" and all that bullshit. After 2012 I only watch anime of boredom and very rarely. Some of them seemed interesting to me only for 2-3 episodes, after I start noticing all the same crap I described above I become irritated and stop watching it. Do you not understand the point of the video. It's not the corporation's fault at this. It's the tax system put on by the government. Unionizing like in the west won't do much. That will just put an even greater burden and complication. The idea of Unions (at least how the west runs Unions such as the United States) won't work well in places like Japan.
@orga7777 Жыл бұрын
Unionizing won't solve the problem. It just creates another corrupt middleman between you and your value. No. What needs to be done is much more impactful than putting in a Mafioso Union. It is about negotiating your value yourself. The problem is that Japanese work culture is vehemently toxic and destructive to the working class. So until the culture around work changes, this will NEVER be fixed no matter what anyone does or wants to do. And I don't mean just giving up like so many people have. I mean staged walkouts, putting themselves on the line to make things change. Being freely allowed to move from company to company with your work experience. Japan is too obsessed with loyalty. Probably from the bygone eras of the past that never truly left them. It is both a good thing and a bad thing, but when it comes to work, you can't find value in a company that exploits your hard work. It all needs to break before it can change, sadly.

Car engineers were in same situation when cars were new, they were also exploited because they liked cars and wanted to work with them.

@@belisarian6429 Unions won't work for the Japanese voice acting industry as their culture and the way JP voice actors are commissioned work is different than the US. Also Labor unions in Japan are not the same as US labor unions. in the US labor unions, each sector of work has a guild and their are mini guilds dedicated to each company. There is an enterprise union and the national labor union in Japan. Both are, from my understanding, controlled directly by the government. There are no labor guilds. So I'm getting tired of hearing the labor union argument because while it's a good thought. IT wouldn't work. 1 even if the voice acting industry were able to unionize, they'd have to fall under the same union that is run by the government, 2nd that government run union covers every single type of work in Japan so again if they unionize it probably wouldn't be in the image you are thinking of. Labor Unions were, in the 1980s absorbed into Trade unions. I believe the current existing union that covers everything is called the Japanese Trade Union Confederation.

Shocking to me that a country that claims to care so much about education, pays each teacher is the same as what a McDonald’s worker is often paid in America. Sickening. You can also look at the fact that they Students that are already stressed out, they force them to be the ones who essentially do the work of a janitor. Well going to all the extra stuff that they already have to go to, and family obligations. You would think they would care more about focusing on education. But they don’t care about education truly. First and foremost, VAT hurts small businesses because they have to (in my country) charge you 23% more and along the way, every time a business makes a sale that 23% is applied as well. Example Farmer sells eggs +23% > Distributor sales to retailer +23% > Retailer to consumer +23% and the gas or other fuel used to transport the shit, every time it's bought + 8 to 23% by drivers (granted, stations get a bulk price that doesn't include VAT, when buying gas for their pumps). I live in a country, where even rain is taxed.

This makes me want to start a charity for animators to get them financial help to either survive or relocate other countries. I'm sure there's loads of studios here in the West that would appreciate the talent and creativity of Japanese animators. I get that migration can't be the one real solution, but if I ran a studio, I'd take advantage of the Japanese decline, and I'd hire as many Japanese animators as I could for them to relocate and give them a great wage with good PTO and healthcare. If Japan doesn't appreciate them and they don't want to take care of them, they shouldn't have them.

There are some really good Animes from China and Korea. Mo Dao Zhu Shi & Seoul Station are both pretty good. Every once in awhile studios will take a risk and produce something unique. But the general trend are mostly conservative and bland. (what you call subduing critical thinking) This phenomenon isn't exclusive to anime but across all media it seems. If you look at anything made before 2010 compare to now, it seems to be much more vibrant in their content. My guess is a combination of "Corporationism" and recent slowdown in world economics. If you take Japan for example, they're been experiencing a economic downturn for almost 2 decades now. Combine this fact with the conformist workaholic work culture, the result seems evident. It's really hard for small studios to survive and large corporations are risk adverse since there's a lot on the line when it comes to producing major projects. Leading many small studios to be absorbed into those said corporations. I think a possible solution here is to incentivize small studios with subsidy and incubation programs so that they can become competitive drawing interest and growth by presenting more unique ideas than the mainstream norm.

Hi there, I'm a registered business owner in Germany, the magical land of bureaucracy. Paying taxes here seems terrifying at first but it does in fact work in your favor if you know how to do it. The money you pay "more" is not paid out of your pocket. It's more like you're becoming a debt collector for the state. The 19% VAT we charge here, are transferred back to your local tax office. The benefit of this is you in return get to write of VAT from EVERY purchase you make for your business. Buying a new desk and chair for work that costs 1000,- bucks? You now effectively pay 840,- and the VAT is considered "loss" in your annual tax return. Losing money means your income reduces, which in return means you will pay LESS taxes. At least here, in Germany... We will have to wait and see how it will pan out for Japanese anime artists but I wouldn't immediately write this off as the "death of anime".

Well, trying to be positive, i really hope this will finally push the long-awaited "Anime industry reform", that focuses much more on global monetization compared to local(inland Japanese), and finally turn it into an actually profitable and competitive buisness(compatitive against western giants). As much as i hate the current state of this industry, with it being so focused on promoting much better monetized buisnesses(Mainly Manga/LN and Music), i'm somewhere deep even a bit happy that there's finally a ray of hope for things to finally change, for the better or worse. Just before anyone misunderstands me tought, like one would think i say its a good thing they f up freelancers and other industry ppls, what i want to say is, i think the main problem is that they was so easy to f up to begin with, as they earn so so little. WIth an industry reform and better monetization however, we might be able to see them earn more money, so much that they finally could step up form this "live month-to-month" style.
@maxis2k Жыл бұрын
I'm advocating for the same thing. However, they have to be very careful. If they seek out foreign investors, it's going to be even worse than the anime industry dying. It'll get taken over by the same handful of companies that took over (and killed) western animation. What they should do instead is keep anime within the Japanese companies, but just distribute anime internationally. Like how a lot of Japanese game companies do it. Nintendo isn't running to Disney or Blackrock looking for investment. They keep control of the company internal. And the anime production studios and committees can do the same. They can keep funding (and therefore control) of the product. Just set up physical and streaming services for international release. They should have done this 30 years ago instead of selling their stuff for dirt cheap to companies like ADV, Viz, 4Kids and so on.
@StarfoxHUN Жыл бұрын
@@maxis2kYea, that's how i meant it too, i never said they should sell themselves to the West. They just have to finally find a way to globally monetize Anime to make it an actual profitable buisness as it should be instead of being an overpriced AD for the other, better monetized medias.

I’d rather see a drop in quality, than a trail of burnt-out poor artists living in unbearable conditions. If a studio cannot pay living wages it should not exist, hard as that may be. wouldn't the core issue be the industry itself that doesn't pay the studios enough for the work done? From what I gather, consumption taxes have been in Japan for 30 years, and previously, any entity earning 10M yen or less per year were exempt. Now, in the context of animators and manga freelancers, they are effectively no longer exempt. Although this means they would have to pay the tax, they should have already been receiving the amount that already included that tax. And the amount they have been receiving was nowhere near enough, even without the tax. So, to unilaterally blame the government for this, I think is unfair, as the industry itself is broken. I think the government does need to intervene in the industry, as it is a major cultural export. but as far as the tax reform goes, I don't think is the sole culprit in harming the industry, it just exacerbates the problem as the problem was already huge before the reform
@guitarsaremyfriendzzz7077 Жыл бұрын
Awesome comment. Couldn't agree more. 10 mil is equivalent to about $100k USD in Japan ceteris paribus conditions assumed where 100 yen equal $1. Most animators are making around $30k iirc. Most won't need to worry about this from my understanding.
@Snowycaaa Жыл бұрын
@@guitarsaremyfriendzzz7077 all b2b businesses, especially that earn less than 10M yen, freelance animators included will be affected by this. But to say it will kill anime is a long shot. More than likely, some things will adjust to meet requirements for production. Simply leaving animators with what is effectively 10% less money is even less sustainable than what it is now. My best guess is that once the transitionary period is over, three things might happen. 1. the industry does not respond in kind, and more work will be outsourced to Chinese, Korean, and Southeast Asian studios. This is a point the video completely missed, as even now, a lot of work is already outsourced. 30% less animators in Japan will not mean 30% less anime. or 2. The industry picks up the slack and productions are treated more seriously and with more respect. or 3. The government intervenes in the form of targeted subsidies, tax cuts for certain industrial players and the like I think a mix of all three would happen, with different factions lobbying for different incentives. I just hope the work is respected more. But anime as an art will never die

I think the association bit goes beyond that. Like a lot of older dubs suffer big time due to the English VAs trying to pull off the Japanese school girl sound, the higher pitched voices and so on. By trying to sound more Japanese, they only serve to break the audience's immersion. You don't even need to be watching the show. Just the voices are wrong for English speakers.

It sounds like how it works in other countries... Japan has a problem with paying the workers at all. This should be enforced more, this is the problem.

Anime fans need to start pulling and archiving good anime and anime that pushes the norm. We are about to enter a period of soulless anime and when the industry rights itself I'm afraid a lot for the good anime will be lost. It happened to the 70s and 80s anime and honestly the 90s too. Archivists get on it and be the heros of the renaissance

As heartless as this probably sounds, If this DOES go through, I genuinely hope that they refuse to issue invoices, because if more and more animators, translators and illustrators refuse, Japanese Animation Companies will be forced to re-evaluate their decision, because without those employees, they quite literally have NOTHING, so if everyone refuses to file these invoices, it would be impossible to let them go. The reason WHY it would be impossible circles right back around to the fact that if all of them refuse and the companies let them go, they'll be left without anyone to work on Anime, and without anyone to work on anime, they lose their entire business, and without their business, they lose their money, and to combat this, they'll start taking people back. Domino Effect.

@CB-141 Жыл бұрын
@@tigertoxins584 The problem is, if companies were to do so, it wouldn't be sustainable, as animation is a craft that requires time, dedication and patience to master, you can't just put people to work and expect a product to come out polished.

@@CB-141 Well, I was half joking, but I'd bet on my guess that it's koreans. No offense to them, of course, I just know that a lot of studios outsource animation from there. And on the whole business thing.. If a single law is capable of collapsing an entire global industry, then it probably had it coming. The anime and manga industry are indeed brutal, you're speaking down to me like I'm unaware of this. I've never seen it with my own eyes, so if you have, you'd be one-upping me, but there is an incredible amount of anime that describe the agony these artists have to go through. Depressing wages, expected overtime basically forced on you, and if you're tired or sick, they make you feel bad about it. Superior abuse, no normal meals, little to no sleep, and all of this resting on the shoulders of a middle aged man trying to make pictures move. I'm fairly empathetic but I can't even be disappointed at the state of the country, it all reads like some sick twisted joke.

Anime isn't an industry, it's an art. Art can never die. Yes there will be less big budget projects and some properties might disappear, but there will always be a way for anime or anime inspired work to exist

@@RailwayScholar oh i see now. well, i see why you’d think that the world may be better off without anime because it attracts creepy people, but if you think about it, those creepy people will just find some other way to be creepy on something else. besides that, anime is part of japanese culture in a way, a lot of modern pop culture in japan is centered around anime and things like that, so the death of anime would not only be the death of a culture, but also a loss to the economy overall. plus, not everyone that watches anime is weird, theres just a bad minority of people that stand out because humanity loves to focus on the negative instead of the positive. i had a really strong sense of deja vu while writing this but thats off topic. either way i still respect your opinion but it depends on personal experience and preference in the end, some people have had better experiences with anime and it’s fanbase while some may have had worse

@@Raltze_ I mean yeah, anime is a japanese subculture, but it also exists under market capitalism. and for some reason it's the creeps who have the most money to spend on merchandise. as a result the anime industry has financial incentives to make more stuff that those creeps like. And anime isn't just a Japanese subculture anymore, it has arrived in the West. ⅓ of Americans have watched some form of anime in the last year. To be fair, you don't see the creeps outside that often, because they mostly stay inside. but for any anime I've watched the online forums or subreddits were taken over by creeps. It's an unfortunate reality, but this change might be a positive disruption to that development. Once anime Studios are forced to be more open with their finances and ethical with their employment maybe it will freshen up the industry overall. I'm putting my hopes on it, because I was about to stop watching anime all together anyways. maybe this will stop me.

A lesson that humanity still refuses to learn - corporations are not your friend, all they care about is money. Never ever ever put any trust or goodwill in any of them, whatever the image they build upon themselves. Unionize, vote for your future and fight against this abomination, reminiscence from times of nobility. It's not a democracy when people uninvolved themselves and let horrible powers driven by selfish emotions stay in power.
