To the best of my knowledge, the longest version of this song. Only DEVO has the balls to see what they've gotten into and call everyone out on live television as it's happening. While wearing a baby mask.

DEVO was ahead of the curve and I was behind it, now 50 years later, I finally caught up. Thank you, Motherbaughs and Caselas, and Alan.

At the time this was taped in Hollywood in Oct. 1982 I was a senior in high school and would have thought (at the time) that anyone who would attend a Devo show was a lame wuss. However, 27 years later I look at the studio audience members with complete envy. What an absolutely great band (that I foolishly refused to go see back in their hay day).

I come to you from 10 years in the future to tell you - "My sentiments, exactly!" I always found this band intriguing and unique in their stage presence...an organic Midwest blend of talent and vision. But, they weren't important enough to me for my broke solitary college ass to go see 'em. Now, if I could travel 38 years back in time knowing what I do now about the band I'd have the time of my life & probably find acceptance amongst friends that I've had such a difficult time achieving my entire life(!)

I feel ya. They were way ahead of their time and a lot of us just weren't ready for it yet. We had to do some devolving first.

Why were Devo considered lame? Lame in what way? I mean, they’re whole thing was being intentionally lame obviously, but what else?

@juankenon For this very reason it came as a shock when The Talking Heads accepted the invitation. Hall of Fame's truly are pointless; if you're a musician or filmmaker you should want your legacy live strictly through your body of work and not some silly conceded award that defiles everything you believed in.

Why is Booji Boy's (For lack of a better description or name for it) plastic ring around his neck worn that way? It looks "Upside down".
@jeffgano46696 жыл бұрын
Austin Lucas ...I know it's been on your mind for 4 years but it's called a "spud ring "
@ChaseLamos5 жыл бұрын
I think that it's upside down because Booji Boy had his head crushed (one of Devo's videos) and General Boy warned him then he had to save him. Then (I might be wrong here) since his head was crushed he would chew on his skin during shows so the upside down spud ring would be like a dog cone or whatever they're called so Booji couldn't chew it. I think the Booji Boy masks were falling apart so they used that as part of Devo. I'm not sure though.
@boboala14 жыл бұрын
@@ChaseLamos LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! Hahaha...oh, stop it, Chase! chewing on his skin so the General put a dog cone on him!? And a Booji Collar for his itchy vermin Simian skin! LOL! (Yeah, I read the Booji mask warehousing finally rendered the surplus into dry rot! Damn....I'd walk 500 miles for one of those masks!) Good/humorous start to my day, which is gonna be push-mowing/trimming over an acre of land! :(

I love this band & am still learning about their terminology and esoteric tradition(s), but for some reason - well, because I'd never heard of the 'spud ring' - his whole outfit kinda reminded me of how merchant/noble class men dressed during the Renassaince, especially in the Flemish/Netherland region.

The idea on the album version was for the song to be sung in the odd style of Stan Ridgway of Wall of Voodoo (the band which, coincidentally, was the opening act of the 3D show). It became a competition between Mark and Jerry to see who could sing more like Ridgway, and Jerry won.

The Hall of Fame is an irrelevant joke when it actually come to judging an artist's innovation and impact on music. I mean Steely Dan is there...seriously
@boboala14 жыл бұрын
(I see you've been beaten up enough by other commenters about your opinion on Steely Dan! ;-) We're all entitled to our own opinion, however, for a jazz/funk group they're more closely deserving induction to a 'Rock' HoF than Joan Baez - a folk singer! My opinion. Curious observation of mine is that if you love Devo, as we all do, I would think you'd be likely to be a fan of Steely Dan as well. But then, I have degrees in music & am 60 years old...so my tastes are very eclectic and vast. But anyway, let's try & stay focused as a team Devo to get some reissues of the Booji Boy masks!
