For the butthurt authors, this all comes down to the big rule. Do not connect your value as a person with your work. It never ends well and you only hurt yourself. Readers are critiquing the book, not you as a person. If you know you can't take negative reviews, don't go looking for them.
@michelledaly90894 жыл бұрын
And seriously a bad review gives a more balanced opinion. I question a book that only has good reviews. Honestly I look for bad reviews as much as good ones. A good review will go on and on about for 2 minutes on how they loved this and that, which is great and awesome. A bad review will spend 5 minutes, or 5 paragraphs ranting about the magic system alone. You can get better details about what the reviewer didn’t like. And honestly decide to read it for yourself because it’s something you would like. And if you can’t take the criticism of your work, don’t look at reviews. Only listen to the people who swear it’s the best thing ever and move on. I get you crafted it and it’s important to you but it isn’t you. The reviewers mention, and most reviewers in general, don’t ever insult the author. Go out of their way not to in fact. They talk about book only.

What made me feel even angrier about the whole "Worst books of the year" situation was seeing a few book bloggers also joining in the conversation to say they don't agree with these type of lists. Someone actually tweeted me to say "Negative reviews aren't helpful because they're subjective" to which I replied "Yes, and so are positive reviews..." ... where is the logic? 🙃

Right! It gives me an idea of who I have similar taste with. Bad ratings don’t necessarily stop me from reading something new (I’m such a rebel!). That means reviews are going to vary based on reviewer needs. I try to not destroy books I dislike but my genuine reaction is what makes it authentic. I talk to authors all day long. About the cover stealing: there's a whole bunch of romance book covers that are just "attractive girl in ballgown" I'm not sure it's stealing if your ballgowns are the same color. Authors really need to leave reader space to readers. Reviews (specifically ones where the author isn't tagged) are mostly geared for fellow readers to have a better gauge whether a book will be more or less worth their time. I am an author, and I honestly found the review of Elin Hildebrand's Winter series kind of complimentary. The reviewer was basically calling it a guilty pleasure. She got to book three, so she was obviously enjoying the books on some level. Now she might not be reading another Hildebrand book again because of all the unnecessary drama. Negative reviews hurt. That said, they can also help an author grow, especially if they are constructive. Also, "the rising tides lifts all boats is the trickle down economy of publishing," is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Thank you Ms. Devlin for saying it! The idea of "uplift in baby steps" is tantamount to "Let them eat cake".

About the ace thing. I'm 50/50 about it. I agree that we (ace people) should be open towards the person (or people) who is a potential romantic relationship person. Speaking vaguely is good enough at first e.g. 'I have no intention of having sex but I want a romantic relationship with you' or something. But at the same time, can sexual people also be forward? e.g. if you're someone who needs and wants sex with a partner every day. It's all about communication. We also need to know. Everyone should be like 'yo this is what I want in a relationship' and then if it's not your thing, walk away, OR if you can compromise and try and figure it out, go for it. But it's also hard for ace people to come forward (especially so early in a relationship or dating) and explain because a lot of people who aren't ace just think there's something wrong with us, that we just have a low sex drive, that we just haven't met the right person, that we're missing hormones or chemicals and that's why we're touch or sex-averse etc. We get a lot of bad comments, responses and lashback (even in the LGBTQAI+ community) so... It's hard to say from the start.
@michelledaly90894 жыл бұрын
100% agree it’s a hard balance of gaining trust in a relationship to talk about what everyone wants in the relationship but also actually talking about it. You need to build trust to have the harder conversations. This is what I would like in our relationship and here are my hard limits. And the other person gets to do theirs as well. Maybe you figure out what works for both and maybe you part as friends. But I think trust matters first. I know most people assume sex is part of a relationship but one would think a conversation about when and how often, ect is still something you should do. The ace part just adds a different layer

I think that book reviews are less likely to be honest if there becomes this fear of authors bullying those who say anything less than glowing. A review is an opinion and everyone’s entitled to them and to express them. If I ever publish, I imagine I won’t enjoy a bad review but I also understand that sometimes that happens. If I read reviews, it’ll hopefully be to learn something about what to do better next time. With regards to hashtags, I would still say that an author or fans may still follow them. I work in PR & Marketing so hashtags are followed to enable us to monitor & respond where appropriate (from a customer service POV, typically). People sometimes use them like they would a mention.

I don’t think asexual people “have to” disclose they are asexual to everyone they meet. But I do think that if you enter a relationship, you can’t get mad when they other person (at some point) expects sex out of it. There is a conversation to be had about the role sex has in any given relationship and how important or unimportant we think it is; but that conversation (the one in which we judge the people who like sex enough to end a relationship over it) is different from the fact that everyone deserves to get into a trusting relationship. And I do understand the controversy over this. I mean, I have a problem with transphobic people. And I hate people who say they wouldn’t date trans people even if they are attracted to them because of some archaic belief about gender roles. But a trans friend can’t get mad when their partner is willing to end a relationship upon finding that out! (And please note I said “end a relationship” because I don’t want anybody commenting to this with the assumption that I support the gay/trans scare or any of that bs) A relationship is a bond of trust between two people. Things like mental and physical health as well as politics should be discussed beforehand.

this!! nobody needs to disclose their sexuality to everyone, but if someone wants to get into a relationship they need to communicate their needs, what they like and what they don't. it's basic, especially on a romantic relationship, to communicate!! to know with what your partner is comfortable between the sheets there's the need for a sincere conversation. you can't get mad if you don't even attempt to communicate. there's plenty of allo folks who won't mind a relationship without sex, but they need to know that their partners aren't comfortable with sex or they'll just keep expecting it

@@larissabarreto8879 exactly. You don’t need to wear a button that says” hi i’m ...” so everyone knows your business. But a real relationship, not a date but you and another person or persons, whatever, should sit down and have an honest conversation. I am ..., and for me this is what it means. And the second part is super important because there is a lot of personal area for the ace spectrum, that’s what it’s a spectrum. One persons limits are their own and for a relationship an honest conversation about what your limits are should happen. And while feelings can be hurt especially if one partner can’t be in that relationship for whatever reason then better to find out in the beginning. No one is OWED sex or allowed to make you cross your limits. But at the same time it’s not fair for them not to get a full relationship either.

Idk about the asexual one as I'm not asexual. As someone who has "physical love" as a love language, a relationship where the other person never wanted that to the same level just wouldn't work out. I don't see me being mad about it if a man told me he wasn't interested in anything physical, we would just have to end that relationship at that capacity and move on. And like, it would be found out way before anything got too serious. 😅 But if I were asexual, I could see myself not always telling someone from the get-go because that has to get old after a while. That would be like me telling every man I meet I 100% don't want children the minute we're introduced. Like sure, it should be brought up, but it doesn't have to be a scarlet letter I wear either. It can happen as the relationship progresses.
@amy-suewisniewski64514 жыл бұрын
This is so true. It's also interesting that the burden is put exclusively on someone who is Asexual to disclose that, but it can just as easily go the other way too. Why is it not also the fault of the other partner for not saying that sex was a must for them and disclose that into from the start? It works both ways. I'm with you. Marriage, sex, kids, expectations , desires... A healthy relationship must tackle these eventually. But it can take time and to build trust first as things get more serious.

I am ace, and most aces I've spoken to think that you need to disclose that you're ace near the beginning of a relationship, before it gets serious. Alice not disclosing that while in a serious relationship is (in my experience) frowned upon by the ace community. And, from what I've read of the book, Alice is 100% in the wrong. Maybe later in the book they'll reveal she did try to discuss it and wasn't allowed to, but from the first part it seems like she presented herself as bisexual, got into a serious relationship, and then had the nerve to be upset that her girlfriend bailed out of a relationship she didn't sign up for.

My take on emails: Email me whenever, that's fine. I just won't open the email until work hours. When it comes to discussing relationship stuff... it's personal. Everything in a relationship is about compromise and figuring out what works best for each partner. No two relationships will look or work the same. And discussing things such as being trans, sexual interests, etc. make people very vulnerable and, depending on childhood/dating background, can be extremely difficult to open up about. Definitely not that person's place to enter the conversation.

Completely agree, go write another book instead :'D Thanks for sharing this with us, hope you have a good start into 2021 💖

By the way, speaking of Julia Quinn there’s also been threads on Twitter about the consent in her book and also on the TV show. In Julia Quinn’s book, the heroine doesn’t let the hero pull out because she wants to have a baby, and he’s the one that has to apologize or something. And now that there’s a TV show, people are upset because of the layers that the race of the characters add to it. Essentially, in the show, a white woman is the one that takes the consent of the Black man. There’s several debates as to wondering if it’s rape or not. I think the fact that this is being debated is not a good look. But I’ve also never read the book, and don’t wish to watch the whole series... 🤷🏽

I'm a part of the community and it's a huge debate. Sasha was one of many that are calling out the lack of change. Including romance scholars. There are very clearly two sides in the fandom right now. I haven't read The Duke and I because of the story line. I am also not watching for the same reason. Forewarned. Of course there's also drama with one of the journalists who kick started the reviews. A year ago, the community wasn't fond since the writer did a really bad disservice in representing the RWA mess. But people forget.

I woke up to a thread about this and after piecing it all together I was like “oh, it’s THAT book,” bc I’ve heard romance booktubers (rightfully) tearing it apart. There’s all these people bending over backward to excuse sexual assault because...it’s a romance trope?? I saw this author talking about how dub-con is a “feature, not a bug” of erotic fiction and it’s meant to be a ~fantasy~ so don’t like, don’t read basically. Like ma’am...that’s a fucking bad thing.

I saw Gavin's video where he talked about it and was upset. He is a respected booktuber especially for middle grade. Why would anyone come for him? Lol...they deserve the unhaul that he did of some of those authors books. Since he is in my opinion the biggest booktuber I know who does focus a lot in middle grade, those authors just shot themselves in the foot because he has such a large audience and people more than likely will not read them, I certainly won't. This also lends to people who want to become a booktuber decide not to. My Booktube channel is small, but I will always be honest and he did his tactfully as do most others. It's our opinion, but what I don't like maybe someone else will. We're not trying to turn people away from a book, we're just explaining why it wasn't a good journey for us. I am not author, a writer, mainly of fanfiction. Are there negative reviews? Sure. Does it hurt my feelings? Depends. If you're being nasty about it then yes, but if you're offering a critical review then no, or if you're saying how it didn't work for you and still sending people to read it for their opinion, definitely no problem. Booktube is for people who love to read and to share their journeys with those books with others as well as recommend and keep each other in the loop when books come out. It is not for authors to troll and if you're sensitive then why the hell are you an author? You have to develop a thick skin to be an author because you're going to get rejected a ton of times before what you think is gold turns into gold, until then it's a pile of shit to publishers. Even then after you've cleaned it up and made it sparkly, it will be a piece of shit to someone, you will never please everyone. Authors need to understand that, art is in the eye of the beholder. I will not buy from crybabies that can't handle a negative review nor will I coddle you with a fake review. Either stop trolling or stop writing! Love you Neeks for standing up for Gavin!

I strongly disagree with the "reviews are for readers, not writers" argument. If you're a writer and you don't care about your readers opinion, then what are you writing for? The money? I'm not saying authors should read reviews on a case to case, but to listen to the general idea of the readers and their general opinion. Listening to the general criticism might help you be a better writer and damn - if you're in it for the money, listen to the big book tubers because those are the ones getting the masses to read or not your book. But yeah. Don't get butthurt over the reviews.
@skullfullofbooks73984 жыл бұрын
I really think the genre and the kind of person attracted to that genre is what directs that interaction. I haven't seen any Booker level authors hop on social media to say critical reviews are bad, for instance. I saw one youtuber rip a book to shreds in a critical review, going so far to say it's the worst book he has read all year, and the author responded that he agreed. 😂 But I think if the response these authors have is to try to shut up reviewers, then they don't have the level of maturity to be consuming those reviews. They must only get positive praise for their books or something. Hildebrand was a real shock to me, she writes like a book every year or so and is always a big seller.
@RoxanneCanRead4 жыл бұрын
I wonder if Authors are allowed to read the reviews of ongoing series? They're not supposed to read fanfiction of their work because it would open them up to a plagiarism lawsuit. In many reviews people add predictions and expectations for series I wonder if that's off limits too. Maybe they have someone tell them the general public opinion 🤔

What I found eventually was that reviews contradict each other. There’s not much for authors to learn from them because everyone’s taste is so different. Communicating with the readers who enjoy my books is wonderful and that’s done more through my email newsletter and social media rather than in reviews.

That comment on thinking "ace people need to disclose" is exactly the same way people talk to trans people. It isnt cool to trans folks, and it isnt cool to ace people. Also there's like an assumption that you are more or less owed sex when you enter a relationship with someone thats inherent in that insta comment. Regardless of whether or not your partners ace, you're not owed sex from your partner(s), and you shouldn't just assume you're gonna get it instead of just having a conversation with your partner(s).
@PinkCatsy4 жыл бұрын
I would just like to gently push back that at least in my culture - in Canada - there is a societal expectation that sex is a part of romantic relationships. Although, the reviewer probably did not communicate their point well. I interpreted that the person was saying if you are ace, before you agree to a relationship, the person should probably know that you are ace. That is probably not the best way to describe it. I think it's better to say that if sex is completely off the table for you, as in not something you are willing or able to provide to a partner at any point ever, you should probably make that clear to them sooner rather than later. Not just for their sake, but for your own, so that you don't get too invested in a relationship with someone who is not comfortable within your boundaries. The same way you should communicate if you do not want to marry or do not want to have children. Ultimately, if there is something that you are not willing/able to provide to your partner, you should let them know as soon as possible (and they should do the same with you). Just as you should with any of your dealbreakers. It's not just for the sake of the other person, it is for your own sake so that you don't end up investing in someone who is fundamentally incompatible with you.

I'm an author (still in the post-agent pre-published phase, though), and I will never stop being shocked and dismayed that authors actually reply to, harrass, and/or atttempt to guilt-trip reviewers for, y'know, REVIEWING. Elin's Hildebrand's thing about it being rude to include the author's name as a hashtag? BS. What's considered rude is @ the author with a negative review, because it feels like shoving the review in their face. But there's no reason you need to search your own name, unless you have an obsessive need to know what everyone is saying about you, which is frankly something you should be discussing with a therapist. And all those authors clutching their pearls and acting like Gavin personally invented the concept of Best/Worst lists just to be mean to them... don't get me started. It burns me that "We need to lift each other up, not tear each other down," which is a useful phrase/concept for people trying to work together, has been co-opted by priviledged adults who can't tolerate criticism.

About the 'asexual segment', I haven't read the book, so I don't know if what the reviewer wrote is true, but if it is, then I'm on her side. I mean, in our society, when you enter a relationship, it is implied that there is gonna be sex down the road if you're still together at this point. Maybe it shouldn't be, but it's a fact. It is also implied that you shouldn't cheat and everything else. So for me, entering a relationship as an asexual without saying 'sex is off the table and I won't change my mind', is like entering a relationship without telling your partner that you will want to sleep with someone else and that it's a deal-breaker for you if the partner doesn't let you. It's not bad to need an open relationship or to be asexual or anything perse. But leading around someone who has other wishes? It doesn't sit well with me. About L.J. Shen, I'm biased, since I loved the books I've read by her but the screenshots are weird since the covers don't match at all the covers I have with those books (which I own since their release). So it isn't those covers with whom the books were advertised at the beginning. But at that time, the theme of the dress to go with each female character was already here, so I'd say that the covers are in line with the content of the book. (And if we go there, I can think on the top of my head of at least three other romance books with similar covers, so at this point, it's more of a romance trope that anything) I haven't read 'The Devil Wears Black' but from what I understand, the cover and the title were done purposefully since the book is set in a similar universe. I totally think Elin is in the wrong on this one. Obviously, you shouldn't rub an author's nose in a bad review, no matter what, but she's totally in the wrong here.

Okay, so I’m finally catching up on this Book CommuniTEA, and I have some thoughts on the “Let’s Talk About Love” story as an ace woman. *edit, because I initially said it was the first story in the video when it wasn’t. I’m binging the playlist and they blurred together haha I’m 20, and am potentially just entering my first relationship (we’re not on campus now, I’m in college, so we’re hoping to be able to hang out and get to know each other in person when we go back for spring semester). I’ve always felt behind my peers and terrible about myself because of this, and my asexuality in our sex crazed society. One of the first things I discussed once we had talked for a while and began to think we could be a good match was my asexuality. I found out, while he isn’t as familiar with the terminology, he had never had sex either and wasn’t really interested. It was a relief to hear this- we were in the same place in a crucial part of romantic relationships. I agree with the original poster that it is, in general, a good thing to know before entering into a relationship. However, I also agree with the critiques that there are cases where people might not be ready to disclose that and shouldn’t be forced to (though broadly sprawling I think that might be a sign you’re not ready to date). What I 100% agree with the original poster, however, is that this main character had NO right to get upset at her ex for breaking up with her because they wanted sex in the relationship. It sucks and it hurts, but that is a natural consequence of not being on the same page in such a central part of relationships from the beginning. The main character had every right to grieve, but should understand (or perhaps have a journey of growing to understand) that her partner had every right to break things off and look for a relationship where she can be fully fulfilled in what she wants. I understand if someone is not ready to share, but if they chose to enter into a relationship before they are ready, they have to accept the possibility of this outcome.

On the topic of the very similar covers: It's not like its a new phenomenon for lesser known works to make similar covers to very popular works. That's why we have cover trends in general. pretty girl in a ball gown facing away from the camera, and even having similar colors, does not constitute "stealing" covers. The models arent even in the same pose. I think at worst you could call it a knockoff. Also: with the Devil Wears Black cover - like... wedding cake and a trident fork seems like.... like I haven't read the book - but those are both very common, obvious symbols for weddings and the devil....... so, again, can't really say that was stealing - it's not stealing to use common tropes in your visual design.

Quickly, about the asexual thing. I'm ace. I don't tell people I'm ace immediately. I don't owe anyone my coming out. With the modern relationship we have with sex, there's a good chance the topic is going to come up soon enough, as we don't wait months anymore to have sex nowadays. So I'll be able to have a conversation about it before the relationship gets too involved. However, you know what I'm not gonna do? Put my identity out there, towards someone I barely know, when the reaction to ace people is still very much gear around "you're ill", "you have trauma", "you haven't met the right person yet", or worse but just as common "lemme fix that for you" (which more often than not, leads to assault btw). However, having that conversation with someone I already like and who, normally, likes me too, otherwise we wouldn't be dating, offers a sort of security, as well as the time to gage how they're gonna react. That's just basic safety, people. And the way this reviewer just expects things of ace people, and expects certain behaviours as well as judges us for our identity, is just disgusting. If it was in reverse and ace people were expecting things of allo people, we would be bashed to no end. And the argument of "I have ace friends!" is just gross. I pity your friends, and they really should stop seeing you.

I haven’t finished the video yet but I had to comment. I think authors should engage if they can handle the criticism. If someone didn’t care for the story and the author feels the need to engage they should ask for specific feedback and take that with them to their next project. You can’t please everyone. They could also say “I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the work but thanks for checking it out.” Idk. Bashing reviewers is not it though. Not by a long shot. I don’t care for what authors do in their personal lives but when they start engaging in problematic ways that’s when I start side eyeing their work. Like I just can’t support bullies.
