The island of sea women by Lisa See is also about the haenyeo of jeju but it’s set slightly earlier at the start of WW2. I really liked it and it really opened my eyes to the way the local people were treated during the occupation and what these women went through to provide for their families

I can relate about The Goldfinch. I think it's a good novel and worth reading, and on occasion there were parts that really hit home for me. Particularly the parts in Vegas. But, it did feel like there's long stretches where nothing happened. Not to backseat Donna Tartt to much, this won a Pulitzer after all, but it felt like a lot of material could have been cut down so the book didn't feel so drawn out.

Just finished "The Florentines", "The House of Fragile Things" and "Frankenstein in Bagdad" The latter was mentioned by the Book Boss, or *Emmie* to you, and me. I did enjoy it, but it was a little uneven, and swapping from third to first-person towards the end did little to help the narrative. I suppose the whole book was a metaphor for the chaos in Iraq and the splintered world of Bagdad. Worth giving it a go though. Pleased to hear you are leaving that building site you have been living in, amazed how cheerful you have remained throughout. I hope the move goes relatively painlessly.
