Forgot to mention in the video, but I will be donating all ad revenue from this video to the Tilted Axis crowdfunding campaign, between now and when the campaign ends at the end of October. It won't be a huge amount, but every little helps! If you can bear it, please let the ads run for at least 30 seconds, as that increases the amount that's paid out 🙏

Thank you for standing up for kindle. As someone who has recently suffered with their eyesight and suffers with arm pain. Lifting a kindle and also reading at adjusted size text has been a lifesaver for me. Yes there are lots of different e readers, but as a disabled person who finds it difficult to earn income and to visit libraries. Kindle has given me a world of accessibility.

I very much enjoy these book news videos. It makes sense that in a cost of living crisis bookstores would be suffering although to many of us books still count as necessities. Here in Australia The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich is now available so looking forward to that. I don't enjoy Sally Rooney at all so giving her a miss. I also don't enjoy Jonathan Franzen even though I've read probably 3, but I would say that if I had to pick one The Corrections is the one to read.

It’s a shame when great bookshops face these challenges! Easy to take them for granted but does highlight the importance of buying locally when you can.

Ugh. Really like Tilted Axis. Hope they can get the support they need. There are so many great books to read. I’ve got Prophet Song and Bee Sting on my TBR. Currently reading Held.

My Kindle purchases always end up being those books I wouldn’t really buy physical copies of, so it’s nice to have a kind of backup library! And yeah books are getting more and more expensive so the discounts are always welcome.

Hi Ben, thank you for all of the news you share! I LOVE these videos!!! I believe that Verso was also looking for donations late last month/earlier this month, but I think that they have met their financial needs ( ^ - ^ )

A good suggestion! Although one of the challenges is that lots of people already have Kindles. Spending on a new device (and the electronic waste of getting rid of your old one) won’t be the answer for many people. But for those looking to get their first e-reader, definitely worth looking into!

I ran to my library's website to place a hold on Paula Hawkins' The Blue Hour. They have 46 copies on order and I'm 36th in line, so I'll get to read one that no one else has touched yet, lol. I know that's not literary fiction, but your report of the average lit fic selling less than 500 copies their first year sounds shocking. Unless that's only UK and only physical book sales, or if indie and self published books with no marketing whatsoever are averaged in? Or maybe they don't count pre-orders, which is how libraries place their orders of any upcoming noteworthy titles? Because otherwise wouldn't sales (including audiobook leasing) to libraries alone be more than that? 🤔
@benreadsgood15 сағат бұрын
That stat was from a UK publisher so might be a UK-only number - not sure. But it is an average, and I reckon there are plenty of published books that don’t even make it into many (if any) libraries. I think there was something from the DOJ investigation into Penguin Random House that basically made it clear publishers make tonnes and tonnes of ‘little bets’ where they don’t expect to make their money back, all in the hopes of finding that 1 in 1000 hit that can pay for everything else.

Excuse me? A German book I have not heard of and have to find out through a booktuber from the UK? Rude. 😂 I immediately seeked it out and I love the German cover. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I've read Ingenious Pain by Andrew Miller a couple of years ago and was really surprised how much I liked it, considering that I'm usually not really into historical fiction. And The Land in Winter sounds also intriguing. Meryl Streep is a perfect cast for The Corrections. Curious to find out who else will be casted.
@benreadsgood15 сағат бұрын
If it makes you feel any better, Inokai is Swiss German! 😅 Although she does now live in Berlin. The German cover did look great, if it’s the same one she read from at the event I went to.
@EllenFelicity13 сағат бұрын
I'm saying this with absolutely zero qualification 😂 but I don't think people are buying Rooney books *instead of* other books. Yes, it would be good to see marketing pushes and media attention for more lit fic but, I don't have much patience for griping that she is 'overrated'. I'm about to read the safekeep and I'm really looking forward to it
@benreadsgood9 сағат бұрын
You may well be right! Definitely think that’s the case with big name biographies. But I could imagine someone going into a bookshop and picking up the new Rooney novel instead of browsing any further or asking for a recommendation. Guess it depends on people’s book budgets! Hope you enjoy The Safekeep - I thought it was great 😊
@1book1review16 сағат бұрын
That is insane, 500 copies in the first year of release for literary fiction? I both feel guilty and not guilty for not getting to literary books as soon as they are published. Not Rooney though, I just can't make myself imagine she'd be for me.
@benreadsgood15 сағат бұрын
It might be a UK-only figure, I’m not too sure. But it’s very low either way, isn’t it!
