@chetsenior7253 'slave' in the Bible is synonymous with servant and worker. it did not have the connotations it entails today. in fact there were many progressive Christian laws protecting the rights of servants/slaves including if a master abused a slave whatsoever that slave was free to go and was immediately promised new employment opportunities while the master was faced with charges. which is a revolutionary concept when comparing it to pre-civil war slavery where servants and masters did not even share the privilege of human rights

If that was your takeaway then you missed 5:14 where the narrative assumes the church leadership position known as the diaconate are “men and women”, which is in contrast to the text in chapter 3 which describes deacons as husbands with wives, in other words, only men.

Why not simply ask God to help you understand what He did and how He did it? Ask Him to make it real to your heart. If He is not able to do so, what is it that you believe? God is not what we make Him out to be, nor does He fit into a neat doctrinal box, He is REAL, and He is able to transform your life if you will trust Him. Your question is like protesting any subject, as though you were in a classroom making excuses about why science or math is irrelevant and so we shouldn't have to study it. That would in no way change the curriculum or lessen your need to pass the class in order to graduate! Your protestations reveal that you have no idea about what you believe because the entire New Testament message of salvation is drawn from the Old Testament Scriptures. After His resurrection, the Lord met with His disciples "And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures…", (Luke 24:44-45). We need God's help to understand. Ask Him!

As a theology student graduate, I love what you're doing. May I suggest though that you be careful when you say things like "if Christians become associated with slave rebellions they are compromised" because if the Christian man MLK Jr. didn't rebel against slavery and inequality we would not be living in a free America. Slavery still exists today with human trafficking and I believe Christians should in fact be associated with a rebellion against this evil where women, children, and men are sold for sex and abuse. I think there's just a little more nuance here that what you said above where I quoted you might not allow room for. I just wanted to point that out, but please keep doing what you're doing because these videos are a help to me and my ministry!

Razvan Stoian I agree with you in that the people should be careful in how they word this interpretation. However, there are some things you need to remember too. 1. MLK did not rebel against slavery itself because it had been outlawed for nearly 100 years. a better example would be Nat Turner, although many were horrified by his actions too, as video said may happen. Also, MLK used peaceful and Christian values to achieve his goals and condemned militant actions like those of Malcolm X. Civil Disobedience is different than a full rebellion which usually involves much bloodshed. 2. Our country is based on different values and thoughts than those of the Romans with a heavy Christian influence on the leaders and people of the land, unlike the Romans who were pegan. Early Christians were still against Roman values of slavery and their world view, but they had to be more tactful in order to change it. 3. Christians must be tolerant of dominating belief systems. Tolerant does not mean to accept. by no means should we simply allow sex trafficking to continue. Tolerant means to be patient. Tolerant means to accept that people have a different view and that it takes time to convince them that Christ is the only way. Paul's ministries were not 1 hour sermons to random Greeks and Romans. He would debate them and argue with them for days, weeks and stay in one place for even years ministering to whoever would listen and engage him. Resistance is important. The day the Bible becomes outlawed is the day I become a criminal. I think the video could have handle that a bit better but your argument against it had some flaws.

@josie51653 жыл бұрын
@@jbcfamily4802 well it would rub me the wrong way because all throughout the Bible God lifts up women, if He didn’t want us to lead it would quite literally contradict the scriptures. For one in Genesis men ruling over women was part of the curse as in what God didn’t want for them. Two women lead in the old and New Testament. Having a women be judge and led an army, (Deborah), Esther was put in a position of power to save her people, one was a prophetess (Abigail), Miriam led others in Moses’s time, and one woman even build a city (Sheerah). In the New Testament He lets women be the first evangelists to witness Jesus’s empty tomb, There’s Phoebe the deacon who is mentioned to play a crucial role in church and so much more. God is a God of reason and order, I don’t believe he’d decide that both genders who represent who God is when put together would favor one gender over the other. Just because one has a different types of chromosomes doesn’t and shouldn’t affect their ability to reason, lead, and teach. Back then most women couldn’t even read, they weren’t allowed, so of course them teaching from scripture they couldn’t read would be an awful idea. Not to mention most women weren’t allowed to go to school and learn about the Torah so they could be easily swayed by false teachings. But things have changed as women can be educated in such things and help others. Jesus Himself planted seeds for us to grow as people and not to discriminate based on gender. Many women have the gift of leading and to deny them that would rob the church of a very valuable asset.
@jbcfamily48023 жыл бұрын
@@josie5165 All good points. I have 2 replys. You said "favor" one gender. There is no favor to be a teacher and not. (That interpretation of favor would hinge on if the women desired to be a teacher). Its following the reasoning from Paul. That leads me to reply 2. What do you make of the reasoning Paul gives for not allowing women to teach men or have portions of authority over in the church. He says because Adam was creates first them Eve. And Eve sinned first not Adam?
@josie51653 жыл бұрын
@@jbcfamily4802 Again I think Paul’s reasoning was that women weren’t very educated and never learned about the Torah so, again it would be a bad idea at that time. But I do believe Paul uses the Genesis story as a metaphor as since Eve was created next she didn’t know too much about the world just as women wouldn’t know too much about the Torah, but they were very capable of learning. Another thing was that these were letters to a specific church, a church that had no clue what to do, we never hear the other side of this conversation. It could’ve been a specific issue regarding that church. I feel that out of context it implies no teaching from perfectly capable, biblically educated women. But in context it helps shuffle some old issues out.

Can you do a video on Women's roles in the church. I've done a lot of research on it but it still leaves me asking questions some times. in this video you guys didn't really take a stance on it but rather pointed out the different interpretations to choose from with no references to other parts of the bible so we could make an informed choice. I know these videos are supplements and not replacements for reading the bible, but at least a clear way of finding an answer would be nice rather than offering other's interpretations and saying "Here, choose the one you like"
@stretchedmilk84796 жыл бұрын
Michael Acuna They don’t directly say it but they further explore the third interpretation and actually mention Paul’s praise of women ministers in other parts of the Bible. Also it is important to understand that in so many other when God calls us to act or lead it isn’t just for one gender. He says almost always says his people.
@sossoft6 жыл бұрын
Because you are going wrong about it. You want THEM to provide you an answer so you can still in the end decide what your stance is. The Bible is also clear about personal convictions. If you are still confused by the passage, most probably there is a part of you that needs to submit to Gods Word or you just accept that you don’t agree with it but don’t make the Word say something it’s not saying which is exactly what Paul was preaching against. This chapter speaks clearly about the importance of women to submit to godly men and that what will preserve them from deception and the usually tricks of the devil against women, it’s to diligently perform her role as a wife and mother in the household. The fulfillment of godly women is not found in pursuing careers or men’s roles in the church but in taking care of her home. And yes many women want to disagree with it and twist the Word to conform with the world, but that is what God says and his word is yes and amen and the bible transcends generations. You want a clear understanding, pray and continue to meditate the passage and trust that the Holy Spirit can reveal to your spirit the meaning of the verse so it becomes rhema to you and you understand the practical way to live a godly life according to what Paul was instructing Timothy to tell the church here. That’s better than shopping for the best suitable answer mostly from others who might have taken the time to pray and meditate on it.

@@sossoft I knew that was coming. I love to watch women taking place -leadearship- in the church and teaching in a biblical way. That's my point of view, and I see nothing wrong in that. Whatever you reply, I got one answer: got nothing but love to you
@emanueldiaz57895 жыл бұрын
@@marclhernandez I don't believe there's anything wrong as well with women teaching or anyone, With education of course. I had a problem with this as well and came to conclusion in Romans and Corinthians where it talks about the gifts of the Spirit which states clearly that is for ALL to receive. Therefore, women can be called by God to be teachers just as much as men can.
@MarkJones-mm3br5 жыл бұрын
The Apostle Paul was clear about women being allowed to teach other women (Titus 2:4) and likely also children. It's most likely that, when Paul was referring to prominent women, they were women who excelled in this role and/or were women who were wives of prominent men who supported their prominent husbands in their roles under their authority (e.g. Acquila and Priscilla). Paul does not allow women to teach or have authority over men. This does not mean that men would not respect what women say when it is aligned with the truth of God's Word but that they are not to teach or have authority over men in an official capacity, especially as bishops, elders, and pastors which are designated by the Spirit as official positions of authority in the church. Some interpret Paul's teaching to be referring to wives not teaching or having authority over their husbands as the words "men" and "women" can be translated "husbands" and "wives" but the effect would still be mostly the same - if a wife is subject to her husband, how can she have authority over the church? The husband would, in reality, be in charge. One cannot separate the spheres of home life and church life - they are one and the same. A wife cannot submit to her husband at home but then have authority over him at church. There is not a magic line separating home and church where the roles are reversed. However, all leadership roles outside of the church are open to women and there is no biblical reason why women should not be able to pursue their dream jobs and positions in non-church jobs as long as they are not neglecting their husbands and families (which also goes for the husbands). There is no reason women cannot live fulfilling and challenging lives pursuing their gifts and talents in their careers, or teaching other women and children in the church. The only thing that they are forbidden from doing is taking up roles where they exercise authority over or teach adult men.

My brother was proud to be an usher for the evening service when he was 16 - I was proud as were our parents. After a few months, the "church" decided only old deacons can be ushers - he was out and at least one old guy who fell asleep during the service took his place. When he was on his own, my brother stopped going altogether.

Thanks again Tim and Bible Project Crew. I have to admit I was wondering about that women as leaders bit and I came looking for this video hoping you guys could clear it up and it was right on the money. You guys are an inspiration, not to get too political but you're liberal and progressive enough to look for a more clear understanding of otherwise controversial passages that don't just clarify the bible but also put our modern lives into perspectives while still being tempered and faithful enough to not promote insufferable radical ideologies in every sermon despite living in Portland. That for me is the best of both worlds and renews my faith showing me a new way to live in love for all people and the best gifts they have to offer our world. It also paints a clearer picture of the model of new humanity that I could be if I too wrestled with god. I thank you. I would like to get a better grasp of sheol and gehenna and this metaphor of the fire if you or anyone could direct me to sermons or lectures on the subject. Kind of a macabre thing to want to learn more about but I want to get a better understanding of death, the second death, and what it means to choose death over life in the age to come and how you know if you're choosing death or life.

i dont want this to be misconstrued as a negative. i love these videos and i think that theyre an awesome bible study tool. i do have a question about the deacon part. i know that the word just means servant, but when its used here it mentions "their wives". i was wondering how you came to the conclusion that it was meant to be a group of men and women like the video said.

In my religion as one of JW’s, the name used is “Ministerial Servant” instead of a Deacon. They serve as assistants to the body of elders in the congregation. They must meet Bible standards to qualify as outlined in 1 Timothy 3:8-10,12.

Same here, I have grown up in the Church my entire life and have somewhat read these books in the past and have heard biblical stories before but it hasn't really clicked to me this deeply until recently. It takes a lot of practice and re-reading scripture and in some cases understanding the background context of where the author is when writing or historical context. Often reading passages with similar themes will help you understand what the author is talking about in his writings. It also helps after reading a chapter to use a trustworthy resource to learn different viewpoints on what specific scriptures may be referring to and compare it to your own viewpoint. This is a very basic description of how this process can work and there's probably plenty more I haven't mentioned but I hope this helps either way.

The overview of the Book is good, I love the format and it is good to present the summary. This one emphasizes some good points, but all such teaching should only be a starting place for personal study, so that we are not following any person, but the Lord alone as we are led by the Holy Spirit. The Christianity is not just a set of tenets, or a creed, or a way of behaving in the world. It is rather a personal and dynamic relationship with the Lord by the Holy Spirit, Who will apply His Word in a very specific way to the individual. Romans 8:14, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God". He will glorify God along the lines of the Book in you! It will not only be an impersonal understanding, but a profound inward transformation by the power of God dwelling in you, which is the mystery of godliness spoken of in 1 Tim 3:16. This mystery is also defined in Col 1:26-27, " Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; WHICH IS CHRIST IN YOU, the hope of glory...". We are not to try and do the work of the Spirit in our own power. If that were the case we would not have needed the Lord's sacrifice. The Law for behavior would have been enough. He made a way for us to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit...to be yoked together with Him, and He said He would lead us and guide us into all truth. Praise God for the exposition of His Word, and for the encouragement it provides for us to dig deeper into the Scriptures.

"As also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as [they do] also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. " (2 Peter, 3:16, KJV) You sure Peter was talking about Paul being hard to understand and not the _things_ that Paul was writing about being hard to understand? I don't want to write anything about my assumptions on what The Bible Project team believes but be very cautious about what you preach since you can mislead others. Aspecially since in the next verse Peter wrote: "Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know [these things] before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness." I don't want to sow discord but also feel that TBP crew sometimes goes a bit too far in the editing (interpretation) of the Scripture. Thus may God bless you and lead you in your works for His glory.
@samsunderraj5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you as to interpretation of scripture. But, it cannot be denied that much hard work is put in and for the many, it would be a good starting point for study of scriptures. As far as interpretation is concerned, whoever relies on the Interpreter, the Holy Spirit, he cannot be misled. And then, we have our Berean brethren, for our example. Praise the Lord!

Do you have any more about Tim: 2:12? Because my bible doesn't say anything about wealthy women treating the place like a fashion show. It just goes straight into telling women what they can and can't do and these interpretations seem… generous. If someone sees this, maybe you could point out a podcast where it's discussed, a link or some-such?
@water360210 ай бұрын
I don't know too much, but having read through 1 Tim 2:12 and on, I do think it's very likely that this is one of many instances of verses in the Bible that should be read and interpreted with specific regard to their original contexts, which is also what I love about BibleProject because they always provide that context or at least work off of it. Here, it is written this way likely because the context was understood well amongst Christians at the time of translation. Rest assured, Paul did not think women ought to be quiet and not do anything without being told, as Paul also talks about the many women he has worked with in LEADING the Christian movement. This is a criticism of women who step way out of line as people, and so he tells them that they are loud and ignorant, and thus should learn to be modest and quiet. These things always have nuances, and I love that God's word can teach us to patiently seek to perceive things between the lines rather than submitting to the modern cultural mentality of thinking only in extremes. I don't have any links or anything unfortunately, so I don't know how helpful this will be especially after 3 years, but I'll pray for understanding for all us Christians as we continue on our journey with Christ in this day and age.
