Oh God, the radium girls. I was horrified when I first learned about that. The things that their bodies went through were awful.

Love this concept! I fell into a pairing this month. I read The Traveling Cat Chronicles and The Lion in the Living Room together. It was a delightful experience!

This is a great concept. I've already read Radium Girls, but am adding Zorrie to my TBR! I'm currently reading one a book that would make a great fictional companion to either Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness or Soul of an Octopus. The fictional book is called The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler. The author of this book even mentions in his afterword that those two books were inspirations for the ideas in his book. I read Other Minds, and having read that first is definitely making ideas in the fiction book even more resonant.

Oh thank you for recommending Zorrie. I will check my library asap. The Radium Girls is one of my favorite books.

My favorite nonfiction-fiction pairing: Leviathan - The History of Whaling in America by Eric Jay Dolin + Moby Dick by Herman Melville.

This is great, please do more of these! I love pairing a classic and a retelling or spin-off, so this is another way to do pairings, love it!

I may have to try the Sweat pairing! Been wanting to give Sweat & Soap a try for awhile and your previous review about the nonfiction peaked my interest. As always love these videos!!

Love your fiction/non-fiction recs! Doing these types of deep dives is one of my favorite ways to read.
@meljstephan Жыл бұрын
Here's a few recs of mine. I often find that when I love a fiction book, I seek out nonfiction with similar subject matter. Sometimes one book will unveil an entire shelf full of books for research. - if you enjoyed Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, I recommend Know My Name by Chanel Miller - if you enjoyed On the Come Up by Angie Thomas, I recommend What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker by Damon Young - if you enjoyed pretty much any of the works of Ruta Sepetys, I recommend The Family by David Laskin

Oh, I love this! I accidentally did this when I read The Poisoner’s Handbook on your recommendation! I was also reading Lisa Maxwell’s The Last Magician, which took place in NYC around the same time, and even had some crossover characters and locations. It was such a wonderfully enriched reading experience!

The two I’m dying to read together are In the Heart of the Sea and Moby Dick.

I've read In the Heart of the Sea but not Moby Dick. I did enjoy the one I read, but am nervous to tackle Moby Dick.
@erinh7450 Жыл бұрын
I read Heart of the Sea some years back in attempt to psych my way up to reading Moby Dick (indeed a good pairing). It took me like another year, but I finally did and Ioved it. I highly recommend the audio version narrated by William Hootkins. He really brings it to life; I actually had a smile on my face the whole time I listened to it. I didn't even mind the cetacean chapter...

Great video! The Zora Neale Hurston combo sounds awesome! I had the idea to do this this month when I noticed two of my recent purchases were related. I’m going to read Fire Island: Love, Loss and Liberation in an American Paradise by Jack Parlett, and Dancer from the Dance by Andrew Holleran, which is a classic of queer literature and the first book to depict Fire Island as a gaycation destination.

Such a great concept! I have two unread books on my shelf that I imagine will go well together: «Word by Word» by Kory Stamper and «The Dictionary of Lost Words» by Pip Williams. That is, they are both about dictionaries and lexicographers!

I love this! Radium Girls is on my bookshelf waiting to be read soon. Now, I will look for Zorrie also. I have read twice Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston. It is an absolutely beautiful and heart breaking book! I love the idea of reading Furious Sky now too. Thanks for these awesome ideas!

What a great idea! I read A Furious Sky by Eric Jay Dolin in June. All the way through it, I thought of Their Eyes Were Watching God, because I had read that one earlier, and it helped me get a sense of what Dolin was conveying in his book. I read Green Mansions decades ago. I'd really like to read A Most Remarkable Creature and then reread Green Mansion again. Now I plan to go back and watch all your paring videos!

For Nonfiction November, I read this pairing - Fiction: Nonfiction: River of Gods (Candice Millard) +Washington Black (Esi Edugyen). Both are easy to read, adventure/explorer/history genre, and both acknowledge the nasty legacy of western explorers claiming "discovery".

Hi Olive. I’ve Googled topics after reading a fictitious book but I’ve never actually searched for a book that coupled with a F book before. How wonderful that you did that for me. I’m starting with Their Eyes Were Watching God and A Furious Sky because I’m from Florida originally. Thanks!!

Great idea! I also love to.pair F with NF. I recently read The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah and paired it with a MG written in verse, Out of the Dust. Now for NFNov, I'm reading Dust Bowl USA. Thanks for the pairing for Radium Girls. We may be reading that next yr for book club. I also enjoyed the movie adaptation, it was done well.

So I have Inez of My Soul by Isabel Allende on my short list and am trying to find a NF about the founding of Santiago, or general Chilean history covering 1600-1553 (the span of the book). Anyone have any suggestions?
