Book Review: 1984 by George Orwell

This is my first 'proper' look on here at a book that has been with me all of my life. I studied it in school and I've read it a number of times since then.
It's a hugely important book, and I talk about why in this video.

You’re absolutely right, it is genius. I reread this for the first of my banned books this year and parts of this seem scarily prophetic. I think it’s a book everyone should read at some point in their lives. Orwell just had a brilliant mind.

Great review 👍 I just finished 1984, thought provoking about the world in 2024. I first read it in 1983, and was equally disturbing now in 2024. Worth the read with important concepts.

Great video! I hadn’t planned to, but coming off Liz Cheney’s book about the danger of slipping into an autocracy and currently finishing up WE, I’m now kind of in the mood to reread this. Really liked the reading you did from Why I Write… I’m going to have to pick that up now!

Great review, Gareth! It’s frightening how relevant this book is in today’s world. I’m very interested in reading the new book by Sandra Newman called Julia, which tells the story of 1984 from Julia’s perspective.

Thanks MJ - We is definitely a more enjoyable read I think - 1984 has got some strokes of genius that are unique to that book. I totally agree that We is underrated though!
