An excellent, thoughtful analysis. When I learned that Kubrick's next film would be 'A Clockwork Orange', I bought the book and read it using the nadsat dictionary at the back of the book. The film was initially X-rated before some footage was cut to make it an R, but I got in anyway because I looked older. To be very honest, my brother and I and friends used some of the nadsat thereafter in everyday conversations (jokingly). In the 70's, anything went. And there was a lack of the kind of moral clarity you have provided here. It's a fact that Malcolm McDowell had a charisma in the role which attracted you to the Alex character (as repugnant as it was).

I vidied the picture a ways back with my best droog and only recently did I read the book. I, your humble narrator, thought it was real horrorshow, as was your review.
