I re-read this at least once a year. sometimes just skimming to focus on specific elements; but she's brilliant. I do find myself quoting George Orr- "I pushed a button"... the denouement of character finding happiness at the end, and how he manages it, is lovely. I did start reading PkDick at same time started reading LeGuin but I consider them very different writers. She is so focused on character and clear social structures, and PkD is focused on internal turmoil corrupting external relationships... odd coincidence that they were in the very same high school graduation class (but had no recall of each other- such a large school and class year).

Such a great review! Honestly this book is so amazing with a so many themes and so much commentary on so many things! I also think her writing is some of her very best in this one! I feel like she nailed the combo of character and plot in this one! So many themes like nuclear war, overcrowding and power dynamics are kind of scarily accurate considering the current socio-political climate. I love the Earthsea shout out on the shelf as well!! I love your hair as well!! Have a wonderful week!!

Thank you so much for all the lovely and kind words! ☺️ I absolutely agree, she was really on her A-Game with this one. The section about feeling claustrophobic all the time because of over population really hit me hard. Have a lovely week too! ✨☺️

This is one of my favorite books of all time! Idk why, but I just love dream sequences and the exploration of dreams in books, so this book ended up being perfect for me!

Oh I’m so glad you love it too! I thought it was brilliant. I’m not usually a lover of dream sequences, but this book changed that for me.

Oh no this scenario sounds terrifying to me. I am an incredibly vivid dreamer and whilst I do have some mundane dreams that would be harmless to reality the idea of some of my more disturbing dreams becoming real just gives me the creeps. Literally last night I had some sort of apocalyptic dream that had me waking up at 5 in the morning feeling anxious as hell. My personal feelings on dreams aside this sounds like an interesting premise and I love any story that puts an emphasis on mental strength. Great review as always my friend 💙🖤

Oh no! Perhaps avoid this one in particular then, I hate that feeling when you wake up from a vivid dream. I usually get it after I die in my dreams. Horrid stuff, I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone! Aw thank you! Loved your recent review too. It’s the mark of a great KZbinr when I never read crime or thriller novels yet I always watch your videos!

I'm re-reading it at the moment. LeGuin had a long term interest in Taoism. George Orr represents a completely whole personality in tune with his environment and reality. The jellyfish in the first page is an image of this. Dr. Haber represents the 'normal' human personality.....which is at odds with how reality is. Orr can dream coherent changes to reality. Dr. Haber creates instead escalating chaos, because the 'normal' human personality is not in balance. Haber wants control of reality.

The premise of this book is so interesting! What a unique concept. I actually prefer when a book expects the reader to go along with it, when it's overly explained I unintentionally start looking for holes in the logic. Which book would you recommend for a new reader of Ursula Le Guin? 😊
@harrietsbookcorner3 жыл бұрын
Ah that’s good, it makes for an easier read when a book is written that way so it’s great that you prefer it! Sometimes it feels like people like lore being there just so that they can look for plot holes 😂 I think lore has a place in some big fantasy series, but aside from that it doesn’t need to be there at all really! Ooh, well honestly I think this novel is a great place to start! I started with the Earthsea Cycle, but if you don’t love fantasy then you may not be into it.

@@harrietsbookcorner I can understand why people who love fantasy appreciate the world building that goes along with it. Thank you for the recommendation I'm really going to try to get to it in the next month to see why you love this author so much 😊
