One of the great novels. It is sad that he is largely forgotten amongst young people.

I've read my 1945 original copy once a year every year for 20 years.. Oh, and everything else Willie wrote I spose..🙏 It's funny how three book changes every year 🙏

Such a well done and insightful review with with very telling observations....only to be disappointed by your not completing the review to the book's end. I was impressed and waiting for your summation of what can be learned from Maugham's intelligent insight to man's character. But still a good review. Thank you. -- Michael

Never read anything by W. Somerset Maugham. I know that Amy is really devouring him lately and now to see your positive impression of the first work you read, written by Maugham, I am tempted to look for some texts by him on my next visit to the library or bookstore! Nice review very articulate.

Thank you. I had this book for such a long time and Amy and Alan inspired me to read it. Glad they did.

Do you like The Razor's Edge more or The Moon and Sixpence more?

I've only ever read _The Razor's Edge_ .

I don't think I've read this one, although I loved his earlier book, _Of Human Bondage._

This sounds fascinating. I had never even heard of Maugham before.

This book isn't the only time that Maugham makes himself an observer character is his own work. It's an unusual approach, and I think this may be the only time when it really worked out well for him. It's interesting that you refer to Paris as a fourth character. Good to hear that you enjoyed it!

I was so impressed with how he worked himself into this novel, but not surprised that it doesnt always work so well. I thought the character of Isabel was one of the most remarkably complex and powerful characters I've read about in a long time.

I have yet to read any Maugham - I need to correct that at some point! To me the most interesting and complex character from what you have said would be Isabel I think.

I almost went into more depth on Isabel, but I wanted to keep the length of the video down. She is a remarkable fictional creation, one of the most memorable characters I've come across in a while. Now, I wish I had.

@@BookishTexan The way you talked about her even in the abbreviated version was enough to catch my intrigue, so I think you did a great job as it is. :)

Never read anything by Maugham, though I've heard the name all my life. Sounds interesting! (Stay away from the Bill Muray movie!)

I actually like the movie a little, but its not a very strict adaptation of the book.
