I think the thing with trends is that ever person has a different limit. Some people can't get enough of fairytale retelling and some people were done with them three Cinderella retelling ago. As long as there are readers reading them, I think we'll keep seeing them.

I believe the uprising of books about cooking/baking is due to the fact that many people have started to bake more while they were in lockdown.

I was thinking that too. I was specifically thinking about the rise in sourdough starters. It also made me wonder when/if we will start to see books and other media taking place in covid times, featuring masks and lockdown and other elements of this period, or will people choose to write a fictional 2020 and on.

I read Stephen King's latest, Billy Summers, which takes place just before and references things to come in the future with the pandemic but I am just curious how many people would depict an accurate 2020 with whatever story they tell and how many would choose to just ignore it and tell the story like normal.

I could see the whole trend of books in series or standalone a getting books. Graceling series got a new books, and it’s prob mostly authors trying to get more from their most popular works, and also over time more could be in that world that they just thought of, or the author loves that world.

My daughter loves kpop... buys so many albums, including multiples with different cards, and keeps telling me about them, showing me videos etc. She’s also got one of our cats loving JHope. We have found the cat with her lips of JHope’s lips on posters, she, the cat, collects Mang, and steals JHope figures and cards. She even just turns up when my daughter is about to watch a new BTS song to watch too, even though no one has told her there’s a new song, and lifts her head to stare at the tv when she hears JHope’s voice.

I have a feeling the cooking/baking trend has a lot to do with people turning towards those things while stuck inside these last two years. Hope one of my favorite books from last year gets more love if baking does catch on. (A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, by T. Kingfisher)

Well.... I did count you saying 'trend' 20 times and I'm wondering how many got cut out lol Also like I think I can see a trend slowly rising in cooking or restaurant related books. Two of my last reads in 2021 were cooking related (A Pho Love Story and Recipe For Disaster) and I've kind of found I slowly acquired a few of these. Other than that I think maybe we might see a slow rise again in Hunger Games style books. I think dystopia has been on the back burner but with TikTok reviving older books and bringing them back to the forefront of everyones minds, an older trend might come back around as these older titles have another chance to shine. I know I've seen The Selection in stores a lot more surrounding BookTok tables, and I think it would be fun to see those kinds of book shine again.

I forgot to mention in a previous comment here, but I have noticed an uptick of sorts of gothic fiction. More books are coming out with that description, and I am definitely here for it. And I have commented it on a few booktube videos now, and I am not the only one that has noticed it. I am also here for more witches. I still want fae books, but witches it also something I like. As for dark academia. that doesn't really surprise me, like at all. I think there is so much there, but I also feel like people are just applying it to any school setting and we are being given the same stories even though there is much room to explore.

I hope this isn’t a trend for this year, because I can’t stand it…it’s not a genre as such…but books written with two main characters, and the chapters alternate for each character…I don’t mind it every now and then, but I read a lot last year…and in different genres…
