To me, this has got to be one of the best novels ever. The realism, the portrayal of nature, it's a beautiful book.

Cripes, I went and rented the 2020 film today. I don't think I've ever seen an adaptation miss the point of the original as much as this one did.

They didn't "miss" it though; they knowingly abandoned it. Jack London's bones are turning in his grave.

I read the book back in 2020. It was one of the darkest, most depressing books I've ever read. And I couldn't deny Jack London wrote a masterpiece.

That's why I hate the Harrison Ford version so much, besides completely ruining the plot all the animals look absolutely fake as shit.

@@saljpal3 1935 version with Clark Gable is awesome. Not true to the novel, but true to the spirit. And its current in its depiction of life at that time. At the beginning of the movie a native American woman is shown pulling a dogsled into the town. I really wish that a new version with all the horrific flaw of humanity, and the best of the dogs, could be made. In search and rescue we say "trust the dog". I think that London was aware of this.

Can't believe that the film with Charlton Heston wasn't included. That was the best version I think that was ever made.

I'm surprised you did not include the 1972 version with Charlton Heston. I think there's a 2000 version as well but I haven't seen that one yet.

I just saw the 2020 film and if you can appreciate special effects and a wholesome, family-friendly feel, it's a fun watch. However, I was disappointed at how much it was sterilized to make it palatable. Parts of the novel were difficult to even stomach with how raw they were.

It's a great book! The 1996 version is the best.

it's interesting how literature has to be changed to accommodate whatever zeitgeist is in the air at the time a movie is made. I doubt Native Americans could be the Bad Guys in a movie nowadays and the amoral brutality of Nature has to be toned down to make the kids not cry.

Great video! I like the concise yet informative breakdown of each movie. I've read Call of the Wild and liked it pretty well. But I've not actually watched any adaptation of it.The gives me some good options. The '97 one looks especially interesting. (My favourite Jack London book is Captains Courageous )

Who and why did you need to rewrite the great book of the great writer Jack London? The authors of this film and Harrison Ford should fall through the ground with shame and return the fee from the film back to the audience.

Because it says “based on the novel” só it won’t be the same plot of the original (nowadays the chance of people complaining about the violence is too high) and Disney actually owns the studio, they probably wanted it to be as family friendly as possible so they could sell more.

I have long ago released any expectation that a Hollywood movie would true to all aspects of the books they pay so dearly to acquire. But I liked the latest Harrison ford "Based on" incarnation of Call of.

The 2020 version is modern day blunder over everything the book was about. Casting aside the (horrible) CGI, which would have been tolerable if the movie was actually good, the whole thing is just full of shit. From removing the Indians, in order to appease the politically correct snowflakes, to the whole thing totally missing the mark in almost every way possible. Even the 1972 one is miles better than the 2020.
