Lisa Scottoline talks to Carol Fitzgerald about her second work of historical fiction, LOYALTY. They cover a lot of ground, talking about the trip to Sicily that inspired the characters and the settings. Before heading there, Lisa had done a lot of research about Italy and the rise of the Mafia, but her travels gave her the opportunity to situate her characters and bring them to the page for readers. They also discuss the book’s structure and why it was done that way. Edoardo Ballerini narrates the audiobook, and Lisa explains why she feels he is so right for this book. Plus, she shares what the novel’s original title was and why it changed. Lisa has an interactive map, videos and commentary on her website, Scottoline.com, to enhance the reading experience and truly immerse readers in the book.

I really enjoy the power of the story that you obviously enjoyed researching learning about the rich history of the Italian culture in Italy and also now speaking to your families journey and most people think about and I’m a person of color most people think about Italians, I think about New York, and I’ve been a big reader of Adriana Trigiani, which she gives us a real cultural insight into the Italian composition. I really enjoy her books, and yet not many people are aware of the Italians that went to the south the United States of America in the south, the emigrated here to be farmworkers this opera. it’s a very interesting part of Italian culture, and I think you would be a wonderful writer for a story for that, but I can hear your voice and talking about this book and I’m gonna look for it we think of books and stories like the Godfather, which I read when it was I was a young wife in the early 70s and read that book the Godfather by Morio Pozo but there is such a powerful his Trisa did Italians in the United States not just in the kind of you New York, or Chicago, part of culture, the city kind of culture but what happened into what they might call the country fied composition of those who immigrated to this country and how that happened and why they went to this

So the power of identification and names came to mind like the CosaNostra, the black hand, and the black hand was a name that was used as I believe in the very early days in this country, and it was a matter of people helping people for some in its origination, and who had the control in the power to get jobs to see the certain kinds of things to even advance now that may seem altruistic in terms of what it was all about because we know there’s a dark side to it as well, control, money, power what came to be gambling, prostitution, and all those kinds of things that cumulative wealth the thing that and that I think stands out for me and I wouldn’t purchased your book out on Audible after I saw you do this interview is it people and there’s a powerful conceptualization of the idea of revenge that they wanted to attach that seems to attach itself to the Sicilian contact… Almost like an ideology, and yet I wonder even as in the Godfather, how much can a person take before they come to what they cannot take and that’s not an excuse at all, but it’s an identifying factor of what happens to people even people that have faith and believe in God, get to a point where they can’t endure Propagate the difficulty without the proper kind of counseling or belief factor, and some people go over the edge. I understand that we know that, and for some people they balance it, they say that’s the necessary thing and saw these kind of stories are interesting they give us insight into the human Contin, the the mental capability, instability, mindset, and then we’ll even what promulgates wars all wars start somewhere and we all know that’s true.
