For a classic Sci-Fi film I also recommend "Things to Come" (1936)

Love me some Sci-Fi--haven't yet gotten to Asimov, but will now speed my way to him. And when you mentioned CS Lewis, I somehow *knew* you would be mentioning the Space Trilogy. Thanks for the recommendations, will jump right on these. Any thoughts on James Tiptree Jr.???

Osamu Tezuka does some excellent sci-fi. I have one of his Phoenix volumes "Future" and it really gets to the psychological heart of some of our more esoteric desires and needs. For a film Alejandro Jodorowsky's "The Holy Mountain" may look like painful viewing but it is a very funny exploration of how mystical archetypes present (and are reproduced/commodified) in modern (70s) capitalist society & culture.

Good suggestions. I'd also note that the space trilogy is interesting in the sense that it doesn't do much sci-fi in the traditional way. Not much about rocket boosters and seventeen moons, just a lot of human problems. Another movie recommendation around the sci-fi theme would be tarkovsky's Stalker. A mind blowingly human film.

Yes, that's a wonderful neglected film.

Asimov and Lovecraft are my favorites. Asimov used a lot of actual scientific theories and hypothesis in his works. If you like heavy science, check out the Opus series. For light reading the Robot City series is fun as well. Lovecraft also has a lot of science fiction in his stories as well, just really twisted versions of it. I know, I didn't add much to the conversation. But meh.

Interesting favorites as Asimov and Lovecraft are rather at the opposite ends of the spectrum. They're both great. ^_^
