Hey. Daniel. I sent Goodreads a letter about Rhythm of War being in the shelf despite not being released and this is what I got in response. Hope you see it. Hi There, Thanks for writing in. We accept nominations for books published past the start of Goodreads Choice Awards because readers copies are often distributed, giving readers the opportunity to read and shelve books before the official publication date. It's also worth mentioning that we have to set the awards cutoff date for each year somewhere. We realize that whatever date is chosen may not be ideal for some books, and we'd love to hear your thoughts around where that cutoff date should be and will consider it for future awards. I hope this information is helpful. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to let me know! Best, Vusumuzi

Arguably the Witcher’s characters, and their development as characters, are the most memorable part of the book. I know many people who go through books like a woodchipper and end up forgetting the names of the characters they spent days or weeks following. Of them not a single one has forgotten Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri. In short I feel like the book itself aims on developing memorable characters rather than a memorable narrative as a choice and as a result it’s lack of a memorable narrative isn’t that big a deal.

The Witcher is a fantastic series for characters, but the plot and how the world fits together are all super convoluted. Sapkowski does explain most everything, but the problem is that he just doesn't give the plot or the machinations of the world that much narrative weight.

Love you work, keep it up! Have to disagree on the Witcher, but I see your point. It's a complex read and has several plots going on simultaneously, but they all come together in a majestic fashion in every single book. Plus, look at the way he starts each book - don't recall any modern author who has approached each book differently as he has, and still pushed the narrative ahead beautifully. Even the side stories are well-written, and fun. Without re-reads or analyzing the books closely, as one story rather than individual works, it's tough to appreciate the full scope of this series. One thing I've noticed in the last few years is that somehow the idea of changing your mind, opinion, or stance on something based on new evidence or insights has become associated with being weak, to the point where it seems many people double down on every opinion they have lest they be seen as a "flip-flopper." People seem to forget that evolving opinions are a sign of growth and real life character development - so long as there is ample justification for the change of mind - so I really appreciate you promoting the idea that it is OK to have changing tastes as you get older, find yourself in a different situation, or simply have learned more about yourself to make a more informed decision on a particular matter.

I think it's pretty telling that the main point of the Witcher's narrative involves the three primary characters just trying to find each other in a war-torn land. I love the first law trilogy and the stand alones but Im almost done with A Little Hatred and its by far my favorite so far. Abercrombie has been my favorite author for a while now and this just confirms it more

I really enjoyed the gods if blood and powder trilogy. Mad Ben Styke may be one of my favourite characters in the entire series. However I do think the ending is the weakest part as I felt it was in the first trilogy aswell. Overall though I do recommend if you liked the first series, it's by far the best series I've read that involves large scale warfare.

Personally, I much prefer the Witcher short stories to the "main" story. Great characters, but... Sapkowski hardly seems to know what to *do* with them, much less what people like about them. It's actually kinda easy to believe he sold the rights to the games so cheaply. Also, you know... Reader: "Oh look, something interesting is finally happening!" Sapkowski: "And... skip." Reader: "... Again?!?!" The plot of the main Witcher series actually kinda feels a bit like "The hunt for Faile: The series" in places. -_-

The Witcher is about characters, characters and once more... characters. Plus events tbey take place. The world they are in could be any world, not exactly the world roughly modelled after late Medieval and early Renaissance Europe.

Super respect your opinion man. I think Witcher for me is like WoT for you though. Started reading the series at a point in my life where it became my favorite way to unwind/relax/escape. Do agree with your criticism even though I love everything about it, good and bad 😂😂. Love your vids man!

I changed my mind about wanting to read the WoT! I used to not want to read them because, damn, that’s a lot of books. But I now want to read them because I’ve heard some good things! 😁

I like your rating system. It feels like alot of other booktubers give almost every book 5/5 stars, and that makes reviews hard to compare. For me a book has to be a masterpiece to get that score. But if a book gets 3/5 stars or 6/10 it's still a good book, maybe even awesome

I tried really hard to get into The Witcher series as my husband is a big fan of the game, and he wanted me to read them before the TV show came out. I just didn't enjoy the writing style, and as someone else pointed out, it seems that a lot of things take place "off screen" and we aren't told about a lot of the interesting bits.

On a scale of 1-10, I would personally rate the original First Law trilogy a 7.5. This is in the very good to excellent range. Best Served Cold is a solid 8.5. I have not read The Heroes or Red Country as of yet, but I plan to get to them in the coming months. What I have noticed thus far is that Abercrombie's work seems to improve bit-by-bit with each book. The Blade Itself was a good book, strong enough to lure people in and provide the initial basis to the story. Before They Are Hanged was a step improved and was followed by a further improved Last Argument of Kings. The more he dives into this particular world, the better the outcome.. at least in my opinion. The same can also be said of the YA Shattered Sea trilogy.

If you like efficient stories, you need to read Naomi Novik’s new novel, “A Deadly Education”. It’s short, sweet, and brilliant. I’ve read it through twice in the week and a half since I bought it and still want more. Worst book hangover I’ve had in a long time. Would love to hear your thoughts on it.

I think the problem with people misunderstanding ratings comes from school where we all grew up hearing below 50% is a total complete fail so 60% is not very good.

What would you think about a book series that is set up like The Avengers where you're jumping from character to character and from different times within a universe instead of one large Book or a series that follows the same person

If you want to consider a 6 as "above average" I would strongly urge you to move to a 5 star system. No matter how much you say it, a 6/10 is always going to look like a mediocre score.

Especially considering, on most grading scales that people grew up with (I know things operate differently in different places, especially in higher learning), anything below 70% is basically an abject failure.

Okay don't get me wrong, but could it be that interviewing an author and then reviewing their book has an impact on the review?(subconsciously perhaps)
@ducky36F3 жыл бұрын
I don't think you can actually eliminate bias from a review though. Like I've seen people use language in reviewing like what they are saying is impartial but it's rarely the case. At least with someone like Daniel being open about his tastes and seeing the authors he's interviewed you can anticipate where his biases are coming from and decide whether his reviews are meaningful to you or not based on that.
@colburn00043 жыл бұрын
Rating inflation is why I think a flat 5 star rating is best. No halfs. 3 is average. 4 above average. 5 is up there and a must read. It's easy and it conveyed the most with the least.
