I came over after watching Steve's video. It's a lot of fun to see this discussion between the two of you. I highly recommend listening to the original radio story this was inspired by as well as the other episodes that are up at the Internet Archive. My parents bought me a boxed set of LPs in the early '70s when I was a kid that had a bunch of episodes and I listened to them over and over again.

I watched Steve's analysis first. I'm glad you covered this too. I can't bear to get rid of my books to make space for new ones. I admire your strength, Dana.

I read it online. At first, my reaction to the art style was to underestimate the story. I gave it a chance because I knew the history, that this was a call back to the radio show in which Superman Smashed the Clan and smashing the clan has my support. As I kept reading, I recognized the art style as an important element of this comic book. Yes, there are some grim and dark comic books out there. Those tend to have a different style, not so much more realistic as more... a stained world. That can feel more realistic in that it acknowledges just that, a world with stains on it, stains that come from being the world. This art style seems almost naive in its optimism and how quickly it identifies good from evil. That optimism is essential to recognizing this particular evil and what to do about it. This comic book deals with some real evil, banal evil next door and in your own family style evil. It deals with horrible things. It earns its optimism.

The first time we see a black Inspector Henderson is actually in a late 2000's Supergirl run. He was implied to be the nephew of the by then Commissioner Henderson (presumably the son of Henderson's sister who we meet in the Superman Bloodlines tie-in annual).

Steve sent me here. Glad I stayed for the around the diamond talk. Oh, and let Steve know he was mentioned by name on the TYT show The Damage Report yesterday, 9/27. John, the host was reading comments and someone mentioned Steve's monarchists commentary. Don't have time to listen again to give a time stamp, sorry. Mentioned it here, since not many comments yet.

This was a great in-depth discussion after Steve’s video encouraged me to read the miniseries.

@@DanaColeDares If his mother’s so important to him, why does he call her by her first name “Martha” instead of “Mom”? Plus he entrusted her safety to an ordinary human in a Halloween costume who brands people, who failed to protect his own adopted son, and who just attempted to murder him. (Actually, the latter is way worst, now that I think about it. I mean, even if you accept that Batman is convinced not to kill him because their mothers have the same name, I don’t remember him telling Superman this, so Superman’s only reason to trust him is that he decided not to murder him EVENTUALLY.) Then again, he’s technically not the same Superman, so, touché!

Actually quite an interesting story! Who knew eh? And who would have guessed it would involve anti-Asian hate.
