How amazing that you mention the Pullien-Thompson sisters! I especially enjoyed Josephine's Pony Club series as a child and I'm just now reading "Fair Girls and Grey Horses, Memories of a Country Childhood". As the title says, it's their memoir of growing up in the country. I love the Will H. Ogilvie quote in the front of the book: "Fair girls and grey horses! A toast to you Who never went wide of a fence or a kiss."

This was fascinating, Miranda. I enjoyed your intelligent discussion of all the books and am thankful that you are bringing such a variety of writing to my attention. I am just about to start a re read of one of my favorite books, "Little Women" on this rainy, blustery day (accompanied by cup of coffee and a supply of chocolate chip cookies :-) ). Have a fantastic weekend!

Manderley Press is very new but very grateful for your support and encouragement and I can't wait to send you book number 2 in a few weeks (teaser alert: it's a children's title by Rosemary Sutcliff, set in Tudor London with an introduction by Lara Maiklem and illustrations by Isabel Greenberg)! x

First of all, I love this type of video (let's be real, I love all of your videos). All three of these Delafield books sound great. I was very interested in reading The Way things Are and then you mentioned A Brief Encounter which is one of my all time favorite movies (that and The Women). Now I need to track down a copy of this book!

The Way Things Are is one of my favorite books. Delafield's other titles are hard to find, but you've inspired me to try again. I love Blackwell's Oxford store, but never thought of ordering books from Philadelphia until you mentioned in another post that you and Donna used to order from Blackwell's while in the USA--thank you for the tip!

Wonderful wrap-up of your reading. You have such an effortless yet articulate style when summarizing books. I read The Way Things Are earlier this year and I was a bit disappointed because I was expecting a lighter mood, as in Diary of a Provincial Lady. Perhaps I need to re-read TWTA with a different mindset. I have Thank Heaven Fasting on the TBR shelf, so now I have a better idea of what to expect. Thank you!

Thank you for this fascinating discussion. I have been delving into the work of E.M. Delafield ahead of the book club, and your discussion of these titles is very illuminating. I was shocked to read of some of the difficulties and crises the author faced in her life, and I have developed a lot of respect for her knowing depictions of toxic figures at work in the lives of young women. Against this background, her sense of humour is extremely generous and courageous. I'll be reading Tension as I bought the whole series on your recommendation! On a fanciful note, I can't help reflecting on how wonderful it would have been to be guided round Edinburgh by Robert Louis Stevenson.
@MirandaMills
@MirandaMills 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, in many ways she had such a sad life. I hope you enjoy ‘Tension;’ I hope more of her books will be reprinted 🤞 Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be walked around Edinburgh by Stevenson?! The book is certainly the next best thing! Xxx

Just ordered Edinburgh by Robert Louis Stevenson at Manderley Press. This is a place that is on my wish list and it looks to be a beautiful book. I probably would never have heard about it and certainly not seen it in my bookstores probably so am very appreciative of your VLOG. Enjoy your weekend. Wet, cold and cloudy in Oregon, so reading and hot beverages are on my agenda this weekend.

Always so pleased to see a new video from you, Miranda. I am thoroughly enjoying "The Diary of a Provincial Lady" and am excited to see reviews of her other works. I have also recently discovered Elizabeth Taylor [the novelist, not the actress ;) ] and read "The Soul of Kindness" by her. Ms Taylor has a wonderful way of describing a scene, an emotion and the personality of her characters. I am looking forward to more of her books.

Hello Miranda. I enjoyed this video outlining your weekly reads, but I do have a question. With this weekly format, will we no longer see the baking and book chats with your mum? Those videos are so much fun to watch as well.
@MirandaMills
@MirandaMills 2 жыл бұрын
We haven’t been doing tea reads on a weekly basis since the spring, so that change was made many months ago! We explained then that we were stopping regular tea reads, but my mum will be on the comfort book club. Doing a weekly recipe was exhausting us both & things changed after lockdown & when I went from doing three to two videos a week. Also, this won’t be a weekly video, as I mentioned, just as regular as possible. Enjoy your weekend!
