I am familiar with Walden and Thoreau. We studied him in school. I had a friend who gave me an anniversary issue of the Walden. I never read it. I have known some New Englanders and they strike me as being too full of their own importance. Thoreau does not gain points with me because he escaped life rather than lived it. Life is not perfect but if you turn away from it, you give up all attempts at trying to change things for the better. To turn away and then complain about how man lives his life is hypocrisy which is a criticism leveled at Thoreau along with being misanthropic and sanctimonious. For me, if I want to feel the force of nature in what I read, I look to Thomas Hardy. He is a master at evoking the landscape and the feel of nature. Also, I remember reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn when I was a teenager and the description of the woods as a storm approached was amazing. I prefer Tom Sawyer to Huckleberry but both books are filled with the impact of nature. I hope your trip is fun and filed with happiness!

I think you make an interesting point and I guess that is true for him that he really did escape the rest of the world in a sense. I don´t know what I would have chosen if I had the choice. Escaping is a luxury and I guess that is why it´s tempting. Read Huckleberry Finn as a kid and I see what you mean! Will have to read Tom Sawyer at some point. I only know some of the Hardy titles without having read any of them. Interesting that you put his books in this category, it´s not what I would have guessed. It was a fun trip :)

Oooh I have the Maja Lunde one in Swedish on my bookshelf. I really want to read it, but I'm pretty sure it's still too advanced for my level. How annoying 😆 I'll probably have to read it in English first, but I might give it a go on audiobook and see how much I understand, just saw it was on Storytel 💛

it's kind of sad, that you didn't include the book ' A Woman in the Polar Night' by Christiane Ritter, other titels:Eine Frau erlebt die Polarnacht (original) or Kvinne i Polarnatten. It's about surviving a winter on Spitsbergen/Svalbard. It's. A great book and funny and short.

I'm so happy for your kids who have yet to experience Bröderna Lejonhjärta. I'm also intrigued to read Löpa varg, I haven't read anything by Kerstin Ekman and I feel like I should at least try one of her books, and that seems like a good one. I know there are plenty of them in my parents book shelves, but they all looked so boring to me growing up... but I guess I'm grown up now... ugh. I was also really interested in that history of the bees book, and then you said "if you want to be depressed..." and how typical that that is the book I'm drawn to! 😅 I'm currently reading Bandit queens and Before the coffee gets cold, neither of which feel very outdoorsy so far ^^ But I have been reading them a bit outside, so there is that. Enjoy your hiking and please do post a picture!

Me too! I have tried reading Ronja Røverdatter the last couple of weeks, but it´s still too early.. I have Hendelser ved vann here as well, but that has not happened yet. History of bees is a little depressing in itself, but it´s mostly the thoughts I make in my head whilst reading it.. Read before the coffee last year, it does not become very outdoorsy either :) Thanks! I have posted a couple in the community tab place :)

@@becomingabookworm Ronja is my favorite. Give it time ^^ I can imagine my mind will go to depressing places as well! I might stick with fun stuff for a bit longer, or as fun as it gets when I’m reading haha

I tend to really like Icelandic books where the weather is central or adds to the atmosphere in the book. Might check out the Halldór Laxness book, though I think I would prefer reading it in Norwegian. Your talk about classics made me laugh. So glad I got you to read Mørke. 😁 I have Kerstin Eksmann book on my TBR, I even have it in Swedish. Brødrene Løvehjerte is a childhood favourite of mine. Along with Mio min Mio. Bienes historie is another book sitting unread on my shelf...

I should also have read it in Norwegian, but I think it was hard to find.. Cant remember clearly.. I have not read Mio yet but it’s in house. I might save it so I can read it with the kids for the first time :)

@@becomingabookworm I think you'll be able to find Halldór Laxness in the library. ;-) Oh, and by the way, have you read Psykolog i sovepose?
