Honestly, I never get why people say “well of course you don’t like that book you never like anything in that genre/ a book with that trope in it”. That’s so dumb. Every book is its own thing. I usually don’t like adult romance but I personally really enjoyed Red White and Royal Blue. Same with thrillers, I usually don’t like them but I keep picking them up because I’ve found some that blow me out of the water. Also tastes change. I used to not like adult fantasy and I’m getting more and more into them as we speak. People who don’t read an entire genre because they didn’t like one book from within that genre are missing out on so much. I just don’t get it.
@brookeammerman82794 жыл бұрын
Jelke Lenaerts I get what you saying but for me I don’t like non-fiction, it’s just not for me even if I just read one book and didn’t like it, I know this sounds dumb but I just know that it’s not just my kind of book.
@lenaertsjelke4 жыл бұрын
Brooke Ammerman but I think non-fiction is different than just saying I don’t like all fantasies just because I disliked one. I was more talking about genres within fiction. There’s a lot of people who don’t like reading non-fiction because for example they read for escapism and non-fiction doesn’t give them that.
@carolinetaylor30694 жыл бұрын
Jelke Lenaerts I understand, I tried a couple thrillers a couple years ago and didn’t like them, but I’ve given them another chance this year and I’m really enjoying them!

I absolutely agree. I would include nonfiction in the arguement, though. I used to avidly avoid nonfiction, but then I read "Into Thin Air" by John Krakuaer. Now I'm on the hunt for another good nonfiction. I think it's good to keep your options open!

Ok, so there's one very important question that arose for me from this video: Why the hell am I not following Gabby yet? Anyone who has Red, White and Royal Blue AND Top Secret on their favourite list is my person. As far as this video goes, I am always conflicted when it comes to Kayla reading something like Red, White and Royal Blue. We have very different tastes and I mostly watch her videos just because I like her as a person, not neccessarily for recs. So, with RWARB I was initially excited that she would read that, because it's my favorite book, but that the other part of me reminded me that she probably wouldn't like it :D. Still love the video though, obviously :D. I'm never really worried that Kayla won't like something because I know she wouldn't judge, so it's still fun to watch since the anxiety is not there.

i think one of the nicest things about *red, white & royal blue* is how, like you said, safe it is and not painful/dramatic. most very popular lgbt+ books tend to be heavy and hard-hitting because truly, that's how the experience goes for a lot of people in our reality, and those books are fine and obviously very important to exist and be out there. but imo the genre deserves more books like this too, books that feel like those cozy hallmark movies where you know all is gonna be fine at the end because you are watching a hallmark movie. i personally hope a lot more (what my friend called "aggressively happy ending") books like this will pop up in this genre as mainstream because i think it's important to not just have stories to represent our realities but also ones that set out to be optimistic about it too.

I wonder if I’ve missed a video you’ve done that’s specifically recommending thrillers for those that like some but are picky so the genre at large is out of their comfort zone. I enjoy your insights and the way you understand what tends to interest others, so I’m hoping I can find more thrillers I’d enjoy. Funnily enough, I’d just heard about The One and added it as Want to Read today prior to seeing this.

I personally LOVE that you talk about books you don’t like. I think sometimes I feel a bit of disappointment because I value your opinion so much, so when you don’t like a book that I’ve been looking forward to reading, I start to think I’m gonna hate it too... but you also help me remember that everyone experiences a book differently. I recently had an experience at work where I had to read 4 YA books for a Mock Printz Award discussion. I liked 2 and I hated 2, but I’m glad I read the two I didn’t like. The reason being that I enjoy pushing myself outside my comfort zone and I believe that is why you do these videos. And you seem like you have fun doing it. So keep doing it and reading and rating books however you want.
