You and Paperbird have some of the most interesting collections and tastes here on youtube, and I'm always finding new stuff to read thanks to you guys. Thanks!

Coincidentally, I've been reading some essays by Valeria Luiselli and as I mentioned it to a book seller at a store he recommended Vila-matas, and I've heard of him because Roberto Bolaño was good friends with him, so I guess all signs point to I should really read Vila-Matas soon.

VaporReads - Paperbird does have really good taste, I've found some of my favorite authors through his videos. I really like all that I've read of Vila-Matas but I enjoyed Bartleby & Co. the most, which was also the first of his I read. Btw you should make more vids too :)

Have to say I’m impressed, at both the topics and the condition of your collection. Good to see an American appreciating British literature.

I watched your more recent bookshelf tour but wanted more and came to this one and can't thank you enough for taking the time to do these. I really enjoy how you just read anything whether critically perceived as good or bad and aren't snobbish in any way about the books you read.

Impressive collection! I'm most envious of your poetry collection; so much great stuff. Did you find out about Pitol through Luiselli too? Matas is great, I agree. Luiselli's husband, Alvaro Enrigue, is a great writer too; his style is very borgesian as well. I only have one poetry collection of Pessoa; I'm trying to read more of him. New Directions is releasing a reprint of The Book of Disquiet in a beautiful hardcover(for only $16.48!) that looks so tempting rn. Contemporary fiction in translation is the best right now. I recently read Compass by Mathias Enard and I thought about you; It's about a bunch of scholars who are into the orient, classical music, obscure poets, Pessoa, Kafka, etc. I found my self googling a lot of the references. I would recommend it you are trying to read some contemporary. Good luck with school!

ilovepizza - I did find out about Pitol from Luiselli, I need to send her a thank you card. I have listened to Enrigue's bookworm interviews and he is a really funny guy but I haven't read his stuff yet. I have kept Enard in the corner of my eye but Compass does seem like something I would enjoy a lot. I just wish I could find a damn American author that isn't almost dead.

I've seen a book of Frederick Rolfe! Vila matas is one of my faves especially dublinesque. I've seen anne sexton but not sylvia plath. Leopardi for me that I'm italian is a classic that i read for 8 years in school. Under the volcano is awesome. The tropics by miller are amazing.

Hey there, i adored your collection! If you are interested in portuguese poetry or literature i recommend reading Fernado Pessoa's poetry and then reading Saramago's the year of Ricardo Reis' death (im not sure if thats the english translation's name btw). Ricardo Reis is one of the pen names Pessoa went by and he would create whole lives for them, and the only one whose year of death was established was Ricardo Reis. Saramago picked up on that and wrote this book, in portuguese it's O Ano da Morte de Ricardo Reis. Its a really interesting sequence of works to read so i definitely recommend trying it!

So many choice titles. The dilemma of collecting ahead, projected reading, maintenance of possessions. The diaries of Harry Crosby are frightening but groomed to near perfection. He's underrated as a poet and overrated as a murderer/suicide. Heliocentric inebriate. Hash eater. When his uncle Walter Berry died Crosby inherited Berry's library and was known to slip expensive rare editions into the discount racks of Paris bookstalls. I'm sure, as aficionados, we all love Crane's Cloud Juggler tribute poem. "[S]uns within suns, and cataracts of gold." - May 24, 1922
@elment-82744 жыл бұрын
Also, Crosby is a very distant cousin - from the same Dutch stock - of Herman Melville.

A very good collection! I can't really focus on anything because of the fact that I have to gush everytime I see someone recognize Leopardi's notebook was translated into English. Still it's disappointing English-language publishing is making stupid decisions in regards to translations, it's even reached the University publishers. Couldn't somebody take the paycheck cut to get the book into at least two volumes? Nonetheless that's the kind of miracle one doesn't question. Also I wish my dad would draw me literary portraits. Can we share him? Thanks for sharing it was great to see the camera moving ;)

It was actually Gilberto Owen - you can read about in Valeria Luiselli's Faces in the Crowd or in Spanish you can find Owen's Obras which includes all of his works

gurkepro - I would have to say only second to English language literature, I like german language stuff the most. So many good poets and novelists. I do have The Magic Mountain by Mann, I have taken a break from him after reading several of his short stories and novellas and not caring for them, but his Felix Krull and Doktor Faustus look like perfect books for me, just haven't gotten around to them yet.
