For those who are interested, the non-limited version of this book from Folio Society is also really nice. But this limited edition is absolutely gorgeous!

Thanks for watching and commenting! I agree completely. I think their non-limited edition is (debatably) their nicest non-limited edition they've ever done. Although their American Gods and Dune are two of my other favorites.

Great description and beautiful book. I will definitely have to check out Lovecraft. Love the hand marbling!

Glad you liked it! If you enjoy Poe or Machen, you will likely appreciate Lovecraft. He has a really strong command of vocabulary that makes the stories very visual and fun to read. No one these days writes like he did. And he has a lot of short stories, so you can read a few of those without needing to commit to a full novel.

Beautiful book. But my budget says get the non-limited edition instead. It's just as beautiful. I'm also eyeing the Easton Press book.
@BooksUnboxed7 жыл бұрын
The non-limited edition is really lovely as well. In my opinion, one of Folio's nicest standard editions. I love Easton Press as well, and that edition is quite nice. The Folio vs Easton definitely gives two very different looking options!

Thanks for the sub! I think the standard edition of this book is perhaps the nicest standard edition of any book the Folio Society has done. It's a gorgeous book in that cloth.

OMG this edition is stunning. I love everything about it. The box is gorgeous and the book... The design is a work of art. Props to you for buying it. I love the fact it isn't bound in leather (the artist is vegan, so do I.... so to me it is a great thing, but many collectors have complaints about it). I haven't read H. P. Lovecraft yet to be honest. BTW, I advise you that buying Folio Society books tends to become a kind of addiction, specially now that many Limited Editions are on sale. The one that have caught my eye (Hansel and Gretel) fortunately is not on sale lol. 🙏

Thanks for the warning,! Haha, I can see the draw of why people get addicted to buying their books. Especially these limited editions. If they do more sales of those, I will definitely be buying more. I wasn't too keen on any of the ones in the current sale, plus my current "folio society" budget got used up for awhile after this book haha. You should definitely check out Lovecraft, the nice thing about his work is most are short stories and easily found online or in stores so you don't have to dedicate much time to read his stories. Most can be read very quickly.

That is a spectacular edition of Lovecraft. I may very well have seek out this one or perhaps the unnumbered edition. Congratulations on an absolutely stunning book
@BooksUnboxed7 жыл бұрын
Thanks reamce, this definitely feels like it will be one of the more definitive copies for the hardcore Lovecraft fans. They went all-out on the materials here. Its certainly the nicest I've seen. The standard edition is also incredibly nice, I don't think you can go wrong with it either. Here is a video from another channel of it if you're curious: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6OUZIqKpd-FmMk

Alan Moore didn't write Sin City. Frank Miller wrote that. Moore wrote Watchmen, V for Vendetta and a lot of other comics. I still haven't got around to picking up any of Lovecraft's works, and I thought about getting this one, but the fact that the leather is fake combined with the high price point is a deal breaker. I might get the normal folio one, though.
@BooksUnboxed7 жыл бұрын
Hi Milo, thanks for the correction. I should have known that! Regarding the book, I think based on the design of the book (black on black etc) the fake leather was really a requirement and long-term, will help the book age better. But I completely understand what you mean about paying premium rates, you expect full premium components. I also think for the price, the traditional edition is a really good buy and one of the Folio Societys best non-limited printings, so you cant go wrong with either.
@milocibelli53917 жыл бұрын
I don't care too much about the eco leather, and as you said it was required, but the high price seems like the price of a book that would be bound in genuine leather. The beautifully creepy end-papers, signed print, and box make up for that, I guess. A book like this seems like one I would have to see in person to buy. The normal edition looks almost equally good for the price, and Easton Press also released a Lovecraft collection.
@shaunpearson79056 жыл бұрын
I have 300-year-old leather books - the fake leather isn't going to help the book age better in any way shape or form. Also, leather acquires an interesting patina with time. Who invented that bs spin about fake leather aging well? And how would that be determined? Is there 300-year-old "eco-leather" books?
@ShaneyElderberry6 жыл бұрын
The £270 difference is a little steep. I think part of the price is reflected in the design indentations applied to the cover with heat, the limited marbled paper, and the artist's signatures. Marbling is itself a unique profession, where its practitioners may accept money for their works, but may also decide to part with specific pieces or styles in a trade for physical assets (prints, tools, ceramic arts, etc.). English marblers, like Chris Rowlatt, prefer this trading method. Returning to the binding materials, it requires time to manufacture the heated press design and apply it to each binding. As for leather, I sometimes think it can be a burdensome material. It makes the book more susceptible to liquid damage, and is frequently over decorated in a gaudy fashion by book makers (Easton Press and Franklin Press are principle examples). Simple buckram is a wonder material by comparison, and exceptionally archival. But, if beauty is truly what we want in the binding, the boards could be covered in additional marbled paper, or art silk, and kept in a velvet or art silk lined slip case. Folio Society do both on occasion (e.g. The Book of Prayer facsimile, J.E. Flecker's Hassan, & Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book).

Lovecraft is my favourite author, sharing the first place with David and Leigh Eddings. This is a good looking edition, however, the fake leather breaks the deal for me. Also my bank account, this book is too expencive for me. Thank you for showing it. :)
@BooksUnboxed7 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video! Yes, I think the "eco-leather" will turn some people off, but as quickly as this copy appears to be selling- may be the minority of people. I also think that despite the using the highest quality materials, the cost does seem very high. But it seems these limited editions tend to hold their value fairly well, so we'll see long-term.

Lovecraft showed us the face of the enemy. I like the all black style but not crazy about the art.
@BooksUnboxed7 жыл бұрын
The art/artist is certainly unique and unexpected. Far different than any other Lovecraft art I've seen, and art is definitely subjective, so I completely understand your perspective. The video doesn't do the detail in the work justice, and the book does include a signed print by the artist (which never really made it into the video) which is quite exceptional, but I'm a big fan of modern and experimental art, so I'm likely biased. Thanks for watching!

535 USD for a book? No thanks. These guys are taking advantage of you.
@BooksUnboxed5 жыл бұрын
Oh, I don't know. I've spent way more than that on a book before. If you change your mind on buying one, you'll need to spend more than $535 unfortunately. Because they're all sold out so you can only get them from dealers and collectors now.
@Labios_Rotos5 жыл бұрын
@@BooksUnboxed I respect your decision even though I don't understand why someone would spend that much on a book. The way I see it, books are mean to be read like cars are meant to be driven. There's no sense in owning something you're scared of scratching or scuffing that's just going to sit on a shelf and you'll never read. I'm curious, what's your opinion on this?
@BooksUnboxed5 жыл бұрын
@@Labios_Rotos Well, to stick with your car analogy, I think it's like buying a weekend sportscar, or an old classic hotrod. Its a car, and its meant to be driven. But you don't make it your daily driver. You appreciate it, show it off, enjoy it more sparingly. Similarly, I buy some books to read and others to appreciate. Do I NEED to buy it? No, but we all have our vices we overindulge on. :)
