Priscilla, Please just be yourself. Share your passion, make your channel your own, please don't use everyone else as your template. I like you already so please don't add your self comments about how you are not perfect. None of us are perfect. I would never notice crooked glasses. Enjoy your channel. You've got this. My time with BookTube does not start with- What's on her TBR? What have you read? What authors spark giggles or tell a story that will linger with us? You are a writer so find us books that move you!

Hi Barbara, welcome! Sharing my passion is exactly what I plan to do. I added the comments for a bit of lightheartedness, to show I don't take myself too seriously. So true that nobody is perfect. I'll definitely be sharing books that move me! Thank you so much for visiting and commenting!

Advice for you that I wish I got: 1. Don’t look at your view screen when filming. You have to retrain yourself to talk to plastic. 😂 2. I use my iPhone. KZbin tutorials were magic in learning iMovie. 3. Don’t try to copy anyone. Do your thing with the books you love. There are no rules. 4. Develop a video schedule. Makes life so much easier. Hope these help! 😊

Thank you for this advice. The video schedule--that one's already rearing its ugly head. I figure the filming and editing things will work themselves out as I learn, but I may not ever figure out where to look. Ha!

Welcome to booktube Priscilla! I'm a big nonfiction fan, and I agree with you about the genre - there needs to be a voice, not just a dry run of facts and figures. I enjoy when the author weaves a story to make the nonfiction an exciting read. Great to have you here, looking forward to more :)

(Made it to the end) Just as you like books with a strong voice, that’s what I look for on booktube. I’m less interested in hauls and tbrs and more interested in getting new perspectives on books. So book reviews or lists that give your unique perspective (for instance, I’d be interested in your favorite books on writing). I primarily read science fiction and fantasy but I do my best to read outside my genre (you mention Larry McMurtry and I LOVE Lonesome Dove). I work at an indie bookstore so watching people who read different things helps me in my job. Last thing, your subtitles cracked me up and I hope you continue with that. It felt like author footnotes and it was great. Welcome to booktube!
@EveningReader
@EveningReader Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I'm definitely here to talk about the books themselves more than anything. Ha, the subtitles. A way to amend my blathering, but I like the idea of footnotes better. I expect you'll see plenty of them!

Hey There! You did a great job with the Newbie Tag. You have great screen presence and I think you will do great. I was guided to your channel by Kim from @MiddleoftheBookMarch. I am fond of many of the authors you mentioned. You reminded me how much I enjoy Richard Russo and really need to read more of his novels. Welcome to BookTube, Priscilla! You're off to a fantastic start! Just subscribed to your channel upon Kim from Middle of the Book March's recommendation. I like BookTube for the same reason as you mentioned -- I write professionally and I've also had a book blog since 2008 (now on Substack), but it's fun to make videos. (Even though I am a sporadic video creator at this point, but I want to get more consistent!) I remember reading the same types of books as you in the 80s. It's crazy to think we were reading the likes of Jackie Collins and whatnot as a teenager! (We sound very similar!) Lorrie Moore is one of my absolute faves, too. Also not a fan of Sally Rooney. Don't worry much about the editing. I'm so bad at that and have pretty much given up. My philosophy is, you get what you get -- I'm not in this to make slick, fancy videos worthy of an Academy Award. :) Really looking forward to watching more of your videos!
@EveningReader
@EveningReader Жыл бұрын
A fellow Lorrie Moore lover! Yea, Melissa! I think being consistent with videos will be the toughest part. I'm not the fastest reader, and sometimes it takes me a while to think about what I want to say....which is why my blog languished! But I'm also not worried about being slick. This is definitely more about community than popularity for me.

Hello! I really enjoyed your video, especially all the side comments you added. That was a lot of fun. :) Yes, there was such a lack of young adult books in the '80s. I read everything by Judy Blume that I could find, and also moved to adult fiction much earlier than kids today. I don't know that our reading tastes completely align, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm always open to trying something new in my reading! Hello! Kim from the middle of the book march recommended your channel so here I am! I enjoyed this very much. Your running commentary on the screen was hilarious! I have subscribed and look forward to following your channel. My glasses are crooked too right now! 🤓📚🇨🇦I like to read a variety of genres but I am not crazy about dystopian writing, sci-fi or fantasy. I like strong characters like Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Stroud. Miriam Toews is one of my favourite writers. I am retiring in the next month so I hope to get to my bookshelves that have too many unread books on them! Bye til next time!

KZbin recommended your video and I'm so glad they did! Just subscribed, can't wait to watch more from you. For content I like what you did here, and just chatting about books - I don't necessarily need a formal review of a book but just a general chat of books. Also books you recommend. Like what are some of your favorite thrillers (if you read those), what are some of your favorite non-fiction books? Also I just had to comment about the YA thing - it's just so weird being in that age range that didn't have YA growing up - or it being such a new thing when we were younger. It's like people who will never know what it's like to NOT have a computer in their life, there are people now who just don't know what it's like to NOT have YA books. (I still read YA (I'm in my mid 50s), and I even still read middle grade - the age range or genre of the book doesn't matter as much to me as the story/book itself). Thanks for sharing, I look forward to more videos!
@EveningReader
@EveningReader Жыл бұрын
Kimberly, I agree that the genre/age range matters less than the story itself. So true. Favorite thriller...hm, I don't read a lot of thrillers. I fall more to the mystery end, but I will say, I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara is one of the scariest books I've ever read. Nonfiction? Oh, the list is so long! One that's really lovely is Truth & Beauty, by Ann Patchett. Thanks for commenting!

Hi!! Newbie to newbie - welcome! This tag is fun, I think I may do it myself :D Your comment about checking your numbers and feeling like your videos aren't getting much of a response hits home ahah!! I try and not look as much as I can because I make the content because I enjoy it and I dont ever want to feel that I have to change my ways to chase statistics. It would drain the joy out of it for me I recon. In terms of learning editing, I don't feel like this video needed any cuts or edits. You have such a nice way of being able to speak so fluidly without losing your way. I often lose my words (my processing ability is lacking a lot of the time...) and have to cut out huge chunks of awkward silence while I try and remember what I was saying :P I don't think I've ever had a tbr but my TBR at the moment is the 11 books I've managed to have on the go already hahah!! I enjoy a range of content, but more natural and conversational content (like this) seems to draw me more often than '10 books that X!' and 'I read X in 24 hours!' which I still watch but no where near as often as the more casal content. Loved this video :D Thanks for making it Priscilla!!

New subscriber via Middle of the Book March. Welcome! and I admire you starting a channel. We like the same sort of books and this video is great. We must be around the same age as we read the same books as preteens and early teens. I kinda laugh to myself watching people discovering Agatha Christie in middle age as I can picture myself with my nose in her mysteries in long car rides at 13-- more importantly you have given me the courage to maybe go grey as we have similar hair...🥺

Welcome Sandra! It's funny, isn't it? Agatha Christie, YA author! I've been very happy with my hair transition. I followed a lot of #silversister accounts on IG when I did it, which helped, but there are even more women doing it now than when I started in 2018. Good luck!

Sadly, I do not have friends or coworkers who read. Which is very sad in my opinion; however, finding BookTube 7 years ago has made me blossom as a reader. Book recommendations from BookTube has introduced me to some remarkable books that would not have been on my radar. I am too shy and insecure to start my own channel. Plus, I’m 59 and who really wants to listen to someone who could be their mom or granny 😂😂😂! Best wishes for your channel, and I look forward to all your future content.

You had me with "voice". Voice is so important! I read for a lot of things, but voice is the main thing I am aware of reading for, a voice that you want to keep listening to. The narrator is an important character in the story, and I'm not really talking about first person. The narrator is the witness telling you all about it (even though not inside the story), and often, in a way, the character you end up getting the closest to. If the narrator's voice isn't interesting and appealing, isn't a voice you want to keep listening to, then I quit listening. And this is true of non-fiction and research reading too.
@EveningReader

I 100 percent agree, Sten. For me it's the thing that makes or breaks a book. I can stick with less than stellar prose if I feel connected to the character.
