Boomerang is a 1992 American romantic comedy film directed by Reginald Hudlin. The film stars Eddie Murphy as Marcus Graham, a hotshot advertising executive who also happens to be an insatiable womanizer and male chauvinist. When he meets his new boss, Jacqueline Broyer (Robin Givens), Marcus discovers that she is essentially a female version of himself, and he realizes he is receiving the same treatment that he delivers to others. The film also features Halle Berry, David Alan Grier, Martin Lawrence, Grace Jones, Eartha Kitt and Chris Rock.

A lot of women think like that. They want that preselected guy with a reputation but they think they’re special and he’ll act right for her. And when he doesn’t, when he dogs her like every other woman who came before who thought the same way, then it’s “all ninjas ain’t 💩”. This scenario has repeated itself umpteen times since time immemorial.

This movie was packed with heavy hitters! The comedy in this movie was genius. John Witherspoon, may he Rest In Peace, was the IT. Grace Jones was on point. A beautiful black woman that did things her own way. Yes, Angela could have done better but she wanted Marcus. So she got him. Hey, that’s how romantic comedies work. 😝 Keep it going!

You're absolutely right. This film showcased black professionals. The white ppl were nonexistent. That's why film is underrated. OAN Jarrod was socially awkward. He wouldn't have desired the female version of himself. But he felt like his "character" should've made him the catch. Marcus was attractive because of his boldness and aloofness. Women are attracted to men who aren't manly and assertive. He didn't make his intentions known to Angela. He was afraid she'd reject him. I agree with you about Marcus. He got his cake and ate it, too

HOMG! I’ve been dying to talk about this Jacqueline wasn’t the villain. She and Marcus were seeing each other first even if it wasn’t that serious. She told Angela all the details as friends tend to do. Then Angela turns around and gets with Marcus? Any other time we find that questionable. When Jacqueline realizes that Angela and Marcus got together and she says “way to go Angela” it wasn’t because she was jealous. It was because she was like “wow. Ok. you really in my office in my face being lovey dovey with my ex?” Any other time we would say that it isn’t right to date a friends ex. And they were friends before either of them knew Marcus. So when Marcus showed up at Jacqueline’s place and ended up leaving. I feel like that Marcus was mad at her because she didn’t want to be tied down and he wanted to be the one to break things off with her. To kind of “put her in her place. Im sad that 16 year old me fell for it. Marcus had no reason to act righteous and the audience had no real reason to co-sign righteousness in his so called clap back to her. How did we lose sight that Marcus was an a$$hole? Because he was “charming”? Because Angela was the good girl supposedly? Was she though? She listened to her friend wax poetic about the dicc and decided to try it herself. Jayzus, at least have a talk with Jac, as a friend, before getting with him. Did Angela deserve better? She knew who Marcus was before getting with him because her friend told her and his reputation preceded him. She knew who she was dealing with. This is one case where i say she should have chose better. Angela wasn’t somehow better than Jac because she had a soft voice and short hair. No. Jacqueline may not have been perfect but she wasn’t the villain.
@nervousallday
@nervousallday 2 жыл бұрын
Damn you are right. Jacqueline was never the villain. She was simply an assertive person who saw what she wanted and went for it. She never lied about her intentions and made it clear that she was there for a good time and not a relationship. If she wanted a relationship, she would have made it plain. Angela was a decent person, but she was still kind of trash also. On top of that, Marcus didn't have a real reason to change and you get the feeling that he will be dipping out on her just as soon as the relationship starts to feel too familiar. How could he have learned anything when he really did not have any serious consequences? He didn't lose the girl and he did not lose a friend. Gerard did not deserve to get Angela. Unfortunately, I was Gerard when I was much younger and had to learn to be more like Marcus. Not in that I became a dog or anything, but learning how to be assertive , make my intentions clear, and not hesitating to ask for what I wanted out of a relationship. Gerard thought that by being a kind and gentle soul, it would be enough to win Angela's heart. I'm sure he did not think very much of Marcus, and his womanizing ways, and considered himself a better alternative. Us "nice guys" are usually dishonest with ourselves and think that we are being nice by being passive. Meanwhile, we seethe with resentment when we don't get what we want. He could have stood to have absorbed some of Marcus's assertiveness.

This is one of my cousin's favorites. As for Angela and her style, I never really thought of her as conservative. I thought her style was more eclectic since the character is more artistic and playful in nature compared to Jacqueline's more sexy, serious business woman look. Plus, even in a paint-spattered sweat shirt and minimal makeup, Angela looked gorgeous. She didn't need a whole lot to be noticed. Observe that when she became boss lady at the end if the movie her clothing style changed because she wanted to be taken more seriously. It's about the impression the character is trying to impart.

To be fair, Robin Givens was the it girl of the late 80s and early 90s and Halle was up and coming. I also think Marcus was attracted to Jacqueline’s confidence. I never felt bad for Angela because she knew he had a reputation and was more interested in Jacqueline.

Actually Halle Berry was the it girl in early 90s. That why we were surprised that that Robin givens was the more glamorous one in the movie back then . Every man loved Halle Berry back then in the early nineties!! But Robin Givens didn't really have a great reputation because of Mike Tyson!!

I must first address the soundtrack, which is one of the best 90s soundtracks. It introduced me to Toni Braxton and her debut album was and still is everything. But about the film itself, yes there was so much black excellence. The women were so beautiful and they really tried to act like Grace Jones wasn't absolutely gorgeous. They played a young Lela like she wasn't a knockout just because she had a bad (or lack of) pedicure. They did have Angela all covered up to make Jacqueline more of a vixen. Marcus was not a catch. He was trash but we need happy endings in our romantic comedies so he won in the end. Great review. 👍🏿

Good commentary even though I disagree with Halle's character being downgraded...Angela was still hella fine...In the real world, a guy like Marcus would just be one guy...If he wasn't going to pursue her, then somebody else would had. And despite some people back in the day saying Boomerang had too much exploitation and not enough comedy, I still say it's one of the best representation of melanated excellence on screen...Characters were well dressed, spoke like they had sense, had cool jobs, & handling & making business deals...It was more of an empowerment film to me than a romantic comedy which is why its on my top 3 list of all time favorite movies.

I totally agree that Halle Berry’s character was way too smart and classy to end up with Eddie’s character. Eddie ends up getting what he wants and now we’re supposed to believe that because he’s in love he’ll be monogamous for the rest of his life? It would’ve been a lot better if he was alone and saw Halle with another guy like 6 months later. Not to mention, they really had nothing in common. She was a teacher and he was this super materialistic corporate guy. But good soundtrack.

Boomerang and Vampire in Brooklyn are the only movies I can think of where Eddie actually plays a serious non-comedic role. I do wish Lela Rochon had been given more screentime though. I always thought her and Robin Givens looked like they could be sisters. Both were extremely gorgeous and were certainly the prime black female sex symbols before Halle took over. This movie was a ridiculously underrated masterpiece of the 90's and the soundtrack is amazing.

@@NorthPhilly-zr7xc absolutely as it was overshadowed by films like Batman 2, Wayne's World, The Bodyguard, and the Last of the Mohicans. If you were of age to remember 1992 well enough ( I was 7 myself) than you would know there was little to no campaign for the film whatsoever. It was very under the radar and my best guess is because it wasn't the classic family friendly comedy that Eddie Murphy would have been known for, but an R-rated romantic melodrama with a tinge of comedy with Murphy casted strongly against character as a dirty womanizer to make it strictly for adults.

True. Marcus would have gotten with her, but he would have spent the majority of the relationship cheating because he knew that she was already sold even after seeing the real Marcus. When this movie was released in 1992, my mother dropped me and my middle brother off at the movie theater to see it, and at the time I was seventeen years old, and my middle brother was eight years old, and it was probably not a movie that we should have seen, especially my middle brother, because by him being only eight years old at the time, the movie was very impressionable to him. I enjoyed your review and singing! 🎶💗 Angela chased Marcus throughout the movie and still took an L at the end. He cared about her, but I don’t think he was truly attracted to her. Maybe he did have an epiphany and became a changed man…but I doubt it… lol

Funny part is he didn’t change. They end up divorced in the series. Also, caught a case during the metoo movement sending their daughter into an emotional spiral. Good series.

IMO when Marcus sees Jacqueline she's dressed to the 9s, she screams sexy, sex on legs, her confidence, power she can slay in the office & board room, she's no pushover. He sees her as his equal accept Jacqueline knows how to play his game whereas Angela is the opposite. She's a sweet girl who knows what she wants but isn't putting it out there like Jacqueline is when it comes to relationships. Robin was the IT girl at the time while Halle was just starting out.

This was one of my favorite movies of my late teens...it premiered about a month after I graduated from high school and was a favorite "date night" VHS go-to during college. Yes, Marcus is a dog, but this movie is a legit Romantic Comedy ( heavy on the Romantic) and so Marcus is kept likable. Unlike How to be a Player or Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Marcus is kept as a mostly sympathetic protagonist by keeping his dog outs mostly humorous and having the tables turned on him early. This movie was sexy, fun, funny, beautiful melanin-packed, smooth, should've won some awards, movie. Mind you...this was young Halle Berry...this was only a few years into "mainstream" Halle. She really had just been on the scene in 88 or 89. Also...that Soundtrack..OMG it was a GREAT soundtrack. Grace Jones had been in a Conan movie, a James Bond movie...she jumped in the movie and acted a fool...I'm not sure Beverly Johnson or Iman could have pulled the role off...Naomi Campbell was too young...and again, not a strong actor. Grace (and Miss Eartha Kitt) brought the exact right energy, without those parts, this movie doesn't work...same for love of my life, Tisha Campbell (seriously, she's been my boo since Little Shop of Horrors...so 1986?)...she was crucial in that small, silly part...great effing movie!!!

That is MY movie! Of course....somewhat documents my life during that time in A LOT of ways....so....this film is just part of me. As for how it turns out, hey, it happens. We men can change once we come across the RIGHT woman. It's a simple story of a man getting his shyt together, maturing some, and learning to love one woman as opposed to the lovin' of a whole lot of women!

Wow now that I'm a woman in her 40s and after hearing this review. I see the movie totally different now. I never saw it as Angela was pursuing Marcus the whole time. Now I need to analyze that ending again. Either way I never thought she should take him back. I felt he hadn't changed. What if it was a real life situation and he did change? I mean change shown in actions

Yep its amazing how much we dont catch or dont realize when we watch movies as we age. I just finished watching this movie again after like 20 years and yep angela was definitley pursuing marcus,its subtle but pay very close attention to the plane scene between angela and marcus and the scene when Angela and Jacqueline are discussing marcus in Jacquelines office.

I knew about this film since the 90s, we had the soundtrack on cassette tape and I know the songs well, but never actually saw the movie until recently. Angela was too good for Marcus and I'm kinda mad they got together in the end. Jacqueline flipping the script was the karma he deserved, but he should've ended up alone. I did not go into this movie expecting to root for the main character's downfall.

Not really a 90s kid since I was already in my 20s when this movie came, but looking back the ending was kinda wack. Marcus was a douchebag the whole time and he stole the girl one of his boys was trying to get with. I like the way Robin Givens character played him out. I kinda wanted to see him lose at the end. I think How To Be A Player with Bill Bellamy did this concept better. NQR did a video on this movie and he pretty much said the same thing.

Angela is the one that wins in the end even in real life, she'd be the one to land the husband. Jerrod will continue to be looked over by females in real life as well. Jaq is the present day modern woman that doesn't get a husband and wonders why. Marcus is the player that gets a wife but will still "cheat."
