Boomer I do love the therapeutic aspect, I didnt have the money some time ago to purchase the static grass applicator.. finally purchased one , the small Peco version , but I still love and prefer pinch and stab it is very relaxing and draws your creativity into the results more than the applicator. A few years ago I followed the advice of Luke Towan and pre-made on a cookie sheet tufts with the static grass applicator. But the longer grasses just did not work well, for me, in the applicator. A while later, episode 35 on your channel Boomer I found this method of tufts making. Thanks for the refresh but This is the only way now I make my tufts. If I want them shorter I just use a pair of scissors to cut them down. Vacuum up and save the cutoffs a couple days later. As always I appreciate you sharing your art and techniques so thoroughly explained on this great channel

I'm glad you found the tufting technique helpful. I don't bother making sperate tufts much anymore as well. Although, they still come in handy for those hard to reach places. ;-) Cheers ~ Boomer.

Thanks for sharing. I already decided a while back to get into this based on your earlier vids. How can you not? To me, this is up there with DCC/sound in terms of improvements to the hobby... but I am still shopping. I wish there would be more sampler pack offerings to be able to make a particular scenic type vs. having to buy overly large (for me) portions. But you demystify installation and demonstrate durability to remove fear of trying!

Fantastic, Boomer! Another episode on small details. I have a base in 1/35 with a cobblestone street bordered on a long side by a sidewalk. I can now build lines of mossy grass to go along the lower curb which is always wet. I can add some random detritis using your system of pushing it down and using flat medium to simulate weight of heavy objects. That can be countered on the cobblestones farther from the gutter with random tufts where water collects at corners. I may have to use grass taller than 12mm. but at least I'll have some options in length and colours. I went back to 2 previous clips of yours for further ideas, too. Thanks for sharing, Boomer. Homemade groundwork ultimately always looks better than prefab materials. Come on winter! I've got stuff to do!

It's about five inches wide. The prototype road is wider due to how the road splits and goes off in two directions.

Applicator is hard to beat for large space. But nothing compare to your method of here and there with variations.
@boomerdiorama8 күн бұрын
I think the pinch and stab method is a little more work but results in a better look in the long run. Applicators' are good for "lawn" style layers, right-of-ways, road shoulders, etc.

Hi Boomer. I really enjoy your videos. I have never had a layout. In fact I have never seen one in person. My remedy for this is a program called rolling line on the pc. I live your layout and was wondering if I used it for inspiration on the program and if there was a layout diagram available to look at and study. Thank you. Btw I will, of course, provide credit to you in the title and description of the layout. It's being made for my own enjoyment, and I will make no money on it. Thanks again.

Thanks for the tip Boomer, while talking about scenery i have question. I know you aren’t a fan of resin because of the creep (I agree). would you model a small roadside/trackside puddle of water using GAC500 or something else?. Thanks again for the great content.
@boomerdiorama7 күн бұрын
I find GAC 500 is good for very thin layers built up over a painted surface, and for adding supple textures over existing gloss mediums. If you plan to pour thicker layers I would go with Liquitex Acrylic Mediums - (Effects) "Pouring Resin." Always make sure you test the product, the night before, on a sample piece first so you know what it will do.
@alexlowe18407 күн бұрын
@ thanks so much for the reply. I really appreciate it. I’ll have to have a go with it, it’s just for the bottom of drains, puddles, bottom of potholes ect. I’m also thinking I would like to do a sort of boggy hollow with a few reeds in it, just a wet area between 2 tracks where water sits a bit longer. Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge.

Hi Boomer! Very much like your thoughts on this. I'm working on "A Christmas Story" house scene. Bought an HO scale 3D-printed house kit, leg lamp for front window, sleds & snowman, even a '35 Pontiac cause I couldn't find and decent HO '37 Oldsmobile. Figured out how to use 0201 colored SMD LED lights for Christmas lights along porch roof. Here's my question for you: What's the best way to make this scene look like it just snowed a few inches of snow? Is there something that would work with a static grass applicator? Is there something that could be air brushed? Your video got me thinking about how this might be accomplished. Even though it's not a static grass issue ... it does snow on fields of grass! All the best to you ...
@boomerdiorama7 күн бұрын
Some of the Wargame Scenery Supplies have what they call snow. It is actually pretty good. The best I have seen so far is called "The Army Painter" - (Battle Field Snow). The texture seems perfect for HO Scale. Woodland Scenics may have snow as well. You would build the scene normally, and then mist on some diluted matte medium (with water) using a spray bottle. Then, sift it on to your liking. Note: I always thought that a light dusting of snow (or melting snow) looks better than big coverage. Make sure you do a practice sample, before applying to the model. Cheers.
