This is bollocks. I watched this last night. If a female worker works along side doing the same as a male counterpart, she would get equal pay. Sitting at a till is not equal to someone working physically harder. If she wants the same pay, go do that other job. Nothing stopping you

In a warehouse. Woman are expected to lift 20kg. A man is expected to lift 25kg. A man is be required to lift 25% weight then a woman. It’s is why there might be the equal pay discrepancy. 😉

I would like to see Jackie and Michelle working in one of the depot centres for a month or two and building pallet after pallet every day. Don't get me wrong, i am a store colleague but i can see the difference between the roles. GMB is building their case on gender discrimination and gender pay gap, trying to milk this cow until it's dry. Somehow, males working in stores are never mentioned. And e-mail messages from Nadine are bordering cringe fest and getting harder to watch every time.

The depot work is clearly a lot more physical as they are loading lots of lorries to go out to stores all around the country. They are not just unloading a couple of lorry’s a day onto the shelves. Yes the supermarket you have to deal with customers and serve them but that should be a welcome rest from physical labour sitting at a till scanning items. The depot workers are constantly moving heavy pallets so don’t get a break from physical labour. These woman are just playing the gender card to try and make a few quid, but the reality of it all is, if they want to earn what the depot staff do go and work in the depot then. There are woman that work in the depot who earn the same as the men there. There are also plenty of men who work in the supermarket who earn the same as the woman there. This story has nothing to do with sexism, it’s just more men are prepared to do the heavier work in the depot than woman are.

This is nonsense....The warehouse work is 24/7 shift work..targeted and very physical....A minority of women are doing this but those that do get paid EXACTLY the same as the guys...In the supermarkets we have mainly females at tills etc , nowhere near as strenuous..but the minority males get EXACTLY the same as the females...So..at each section we have equal pay..It is only when you lump it together you see a problem that in reality does not exist...

This is so stupid. The males in the depot/warehouse, would be filling the lorries up constantly. They only unpack the lorry probably like twice a day dependant on how many lorries come in like a week to the Asda. The people at the depot are filling multiple lorries. At a business stand point of view if women got paid significantly less, then it would be mainly women at a workplace, as then places like Asda would save money as there wouldn’t be the extra money going to males. If that makes sense. Some people aren’t built for certain jobs. Females get nails done and are less likely to want to graft and lift heavy items, as it isn’t in their nature to. Most of the time the people on the shop floor are restocking shelves and scanning items being able to sit down while doing so. Or self checkouts where they aren’t needed. For example I’d rather have a big male with muscle on security, than a woman who is most likely gonna be laughed at and taken for a joke. (As the world is cruel) but women are significantly smaller due to body shape and testosterone. If anything the people in the warehouse aren’t paid enough, lifting heavy items, and doing harder labour. And working their way to the top with managerial roles. Women can do that to. Some women don’t want to get dirty or still believe males should go off to work. Women can do the same jobs as a male if they tried and was qualified like a male. Like construction, you don’t see many females getting dirty and stuck into it, compared to a male. Probably due to many reasons like society believing it’s a male role. And the heavy lifting of bricks and that. Women don’t want to ruin their precious new nails they spent how much money on. Males are usually fitter and stronger and not bothered about getting dirty and that, so they suit most roles, that’s why there’s so many males in work. Women have excuses like don’t want to get dirty, or males go out to do the work and provide for families, or there on maternity leave. So it does look like males are having more roles at work. But only because of society and women not actually looking at things correctly and exaggerating everything constantly.

You have clearly not worked in retail. I worked for Asda for 30 years and know exactly how it works. Depo have electric pallet trucks and electric trucks to move roll cages around. The depo people will pick stock off supplier pallets and stack it onto pallets for the stores and onto the roll cages. They are then loaded onto the trailers. At store, we use "manual" pallet trucks and all roll cages are moved by hand. The depo don't realise that a lot of the roll cages are knackered and some are missing wheels cause they don't move them by hand. We then unload the pallets & roll cages to merchandise. Once it is completed. We then put excess stock back onto the pallets & cages to return to the warehouse. Then the pallets are either put into the racking or ONCE AGAIN broken down to be put on the racking by hand. At store level, "Women" are expected to do the same work as the males in store. We don't have the advantage of electric pallet / roll cage trucks as depo do AND we do for more handing of the products than depo.

@@lordmalvada8212 You may have worked in retail for 30 years but have you ever worked in distribution? The warehouse is a very different beast. I worked night shifts as a picker at a Tesco Distribution Centre and I've also worked nights at a main Tesco Extra Store. Yes, the picker trucks, loading bay trucks and fork lift trucks are all electric but that's because the building is the size of an international airport terminal, with around 50 loading bays. With thousands of orders to pick, there's no way they would be completed on time with a manual truck. Driving around on an electric motor vehicle doesn't make the job easier than working in a retail store. Those vehicles are essential for the job. You're comparing apples to oranges. You had to maintain an average pick rate percentage with every order, building the stock up in your cages quickly like a 3D game of tetris. All while navigating the numerous aisles with a hundred other pickers, plus the fork lift drivers as well. It was often quite manic. At other times it' was like like rush hour traffic. Collisions would occur. Cages fell off your forks, get tipped over, or collapse just from turning out of an aisle. Sometimes full pallettes fall from the upper tiers of the metal racking. It's a lot more hazardous. There was a significant amount of women working there as well, although more of them worked day shifts.

Its to do with value, palletising and loading trucks is hard work at the distribution end, but no harder than unloading and filling the shelves at the other end, but there is a pay gap there between colleagues at each end of the cycle , yes checkout is less physical but the value is just as important if not more so, without the sales there would be no need for any other roles in the company

There seems to be a lot of misconception in the comments here. I've worked in both capacities and the work is equally demanding physically. The depot workers put the same things on to the pallets as the store colleagues take off them, and both sides have to move the same pallets as a whole. Although the depots may compile more pallets for delivery, the same number of pallets come off the lorries as go on to them and, in my experience, the store side of things is all-round more challenging, as often staff are expected to be able to handle and stock the goods, plus manage the inventory counts, plus date rotate and reduce short-dated items, plus deal with (sometimes difficult) customers, plus work on the tills. Of course, not all of this has the same level of purely physical demand, but some of it does, and some of it demands more in other regards. But, yeah, I think the roles are (at least) of equal value.

I'm one of the colleagues who has put in this claim, but I get sick of them using the gender argument primarily for the fact that it's not really 'female store workers vs male depot workers' but more like 'store vs depot' gender isn't the real issue, it's because the depot colleagues were getting £1.50 an hour more than store colleagues for essentially the same job just in reverse
