I was a 33 year old Marine when I went through one of the first Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor courses. I was ten years older than all my other classmates. That was tough. Only two of us made it through without needing medical attention one or more times. I wasn't one of thise two. They made the course longer (same curriculum just paced out longer) after my class.

@@irish7460 The instructor course was not for new Marines. Most of the class was experienced Sergeants with high potential around 23 to 24 years old. I had risen up from the ranks and was a junior commissioned officer at the time. I was actually 17 when I signed up and went to bootcamp 10 days after my 18th birthday. Your question is still a good one, far better than most silly questions about the military tbh. The answer varies. I think 27 or 28 was the max age when I entered and, btw, nobody over 22 made it through my bootcamp platoon, not for lack of strength, but the daily pounding our young knees took was too much for the 25 & 26 year olds. Later on the age limit was raised, but it's not a fixed thing and there have always been waivers for such things for extraordinary cases. It wasn't age but the most extreme waiver I ever saw was a WM (Woman Marine) in the early 90s. She was only 4'10" tall, 2" shorter than the WM minimum height standard and 4" shorter than allowed for males. Of course there were things she could not do, but I was a safety nco for the confidence course one day and seeing her do obstacles designed for much taller people, she either had no sense of fear or else she had more guts than I have ever seen elsewhere, and no arrogance about it like you see today. Anyway, as I think I mentioned in another comment, too many ppl think bootcamp is the bulk of military training or the hardest part, but that's like saying 1st grade is harder than high school. Boot is just the beginning. For most recruits the learning curve is steep, and most follow-on training is not so steep but it's always an uphill climb.

Look at how joyous and pleasurable the Air Force Academy arrival is. I'll admit, upon arrival to Parris Island, the gentleman with the smokie who stepped up and into the bus was very polite. He was like, "On behalf of the Commanding General of Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot, I'd like to welcome you to Parris Island". Then something odd happened, a wave off spittle washed over all of us hippies and his voice took on a frog-like rage. He exclaimed, "Now you have six ^$#@& seconds to get off MY #(&&^%$ bus, jump!" The biggest mistake of my life was breaking my body in the Army. Leaving Defence and taking a civilian job working within an Air Force Command unit was a horrific experience, of how easy life could have been. If you're a kid and you're reading. If you want life on the easiest mode it could possibly ever be, choose the Air Force.

A good friend of mine up work boot for a few years he just joined up with the Air Force about a year ago and he showed me a list that they gave him of the jobs that were available now one job on that entire list was anything involving any kind of physical labor at all it was all technical it radar repointing and stuff like that just like ABC 123 go to the house they are very well staffed on a job that should take one maybe two people they got 15 ready I'm not even trying to kid about that I'm very serious they show up in groups

I think Drill was my favorite part of Marine Corp boot camp. We were constantly drilling. Our instructors would have us drilling at all down times that we were waiting outside. Waiting for chow our drill instructor would have use moving constantly. We had to maintain out place in line so sometimes we would literally be drilling back and fourth in a 5ft forward and back direction and maybe a 20 ft left and right direction. They would constantly ask other instructors if we could take there place in line claiming we were late for a class. In truth it became a reason for highly detailed drill as the instructor would maneuver us out of our spot forward of the platoon we were swapping with. Back and fourth until a gap opened and ten they would parallel park us perfectly. On top of that, traditionally drill does not include spinning your weapon, throwing your weapon and catching it. That is reserved for those who go to Marine Security Forces WA DC. We however were so practiced and so prices 5 weeks before graduation the instructors started having us spin rifles. The culmination was that we won the drill competition trophy the last two weeks of training. We were so impressive that two days before graduation, we were filmed by the Marine Corps for training and marketing films. We were the Marine Corps visual example of awesome drill for about eight years beyond boot camp through film.

When I was young and just starting out in the advertising sales business I had the good fortune of learning from a man who was at the end of his career. He was a bomber pilot in WWII and had been shot down twice over Europe. He told me he learned a lesson there that helped him everywhere the rest of his life. Bootcamp is not the hard part although it is the culture shock part for most people. Anyone who expects the hard stuff to end at boot camp graduation should not even bother to join.

Um , I can see the military has changed since I was in . I’m 65 now , but the air force is centered on knowledge more than strength like army . But understand that the Air Force was created from the army . So as a former soldier , I was lead to have the knowledge of all the services in my specialty . So I grew up on infantry/artillery . I just love the part of this video at the 1:20.40 time slot where it shows the Air Force in their simulated combat environment with their nice insulated tent with the city with skeeter netting!! That place is nicer than some of the dang barracks that I lived in back in the early 90's in the Marine Corps!!!! I was sent to GitMo, Cuba in March of 95 till September of 95 and for the first few weeks we slept in a plywood hut out towards the beach, their was no AC, and if it rained we could close the window which was a full sheet of plywood!! I can't remember exactly how many of use were in each hut I think 10 Marines per hut but it was only like a 16'x16' hut, we didn't have very much room to say the least!! Good times!! We had a blast down there! But my god was it ever hot! June, July and August was almost unbearable it was so damn hot. We did PT at 0400 so we could beat the sun rising but it was still in the upper 80's at 0400. Semper Fi from an old Marine

I honestly loved my time at Parris Island. Structured schedule, 3 square meals, free workouts, and a bunch of crazy angry Drill Instructors yelling at me to do things. For whatever reason, they seemed really angry and stressed out and made sure I knew it as much and often as humanly possible. They even gave us the non option of additional performance training in the form if the quarter deck. If I could do it again I definitely would. The food was great. Don't really remember much else after that. Too much drinking, shooting, shitting, classes, and wishing I took the recruiters advice and not went infantry xD. He called me a retard when I got a 135 GT score and decided to be a 0331. He kept telling me I could do pretty much anything and when I insisted on being infantry... cause I loved the boom sticks, he straight up called me a retard in front of the 1Sgt of the recruiting station and the 1Sgt laughed his ass off and said "Well let the retard make his own decision. He'll realize how bad he fucked up later in life." Yeah. I now know, on an epic scale, how bad I fucked up. I still enjoyed it though xD

Fond memories of MCRD Parris Island. I went in April 20th of 1990. That means half way through about 3 weeks before rifle range our drill instructors told us Iraq had invaded Kuwait and we would be going to war. They modified our training. Our instructors dumped most of the history and procedure. They replaced it with additional weapons training to include weapons you normally don't see in boot camp. You see in Marine Combate Training and Heavy Weapons School or armory training. This included 9mm Pistols, Mark 19 Granade Launchers, .50 Cal Machine Gun, M249 SAW, M209 Granade Luncher. My platoons instructors ignored even more of the classes than they were told to and we spent additional time focusing on hand to hand combat buy beeting the crap out of each other to the point where one person can defeat at leat three attackers at once. Our primary and secondary drill instructors were 2nd Force Recon both near manditory retirement as both had seen Vietnam combat and been in over 23 years. Our third drill instructor was an operator who spent more time working with Army Rangers & Green Barrett, Air Force SR, Navy Seal and Canadian JTF2 than he had spent with Marine units. Because if those instructors and the change we ended up with we were easily the deadliest Marines to have left that Island in decades.

I went in 99. I wish I would have never gotten married when I was in the marine corps, I missed out on certain training, deployments, experiences after I got married. Once you get married in service your duty station decisions etc revolves around married life. I got a divorce in the last year of service and I just thought to myself what a colossal waist of time and energy. The best advice I can give is don’t squander your youth, live your life because you only get to live it once. I miss the marine corps, I spent 8 yrs there, 6 active duty 2 reserve. And my time in service had a lot of good times, I had some bad times too, lost some marines in combat etc. but the good way outweighed the bad and I wish every day that I would have been able to to stay a full 20 yrs in service. Because it seems like as soon as i got out of service, the past 15 years has just flew by. Moral of story, use your time wisely while you got it. God bless the USMC. Semper Fi!

I hate to tell you this, but whether you were in service or not, those years would've flown by anyway. It happens to ALL of us. I'm 53 now ... and time just keeps going by faster and faster and faster to the point where i want to somehow throw a lasso around time and achor it to the ground. Your advice, though, is spot on. Unless you have some unfortunate mitigating circumstances, your youth will almost certainly be the best time of your life. Once you enter the workforce, start a family, and all the rest of it, life often becomes a rather dull and predictable routine. In fact, that is the precise reason why time seems to move faster as you get older. There are far fewer "firsts" in life, no more milestones, and new experiences become ever so rare. Life becomes "old hat" as they say. Unless you're lucky enough to have money and can live the life of the idle rich, it's pretty much unavoidable. I went into adulthood kicking and screaming, to be honest, because I knew what was coming. So enjoy being young while you're young. Because you can't do it when you're 40 - and a mid-life crisis doesn't count. But think on it - why do people even have mid-life crises if adult life doesn't get ... very very stale?

I didn't get married while I was in the Marine Corps, but when I got out and joined the Army National Guard (I tried to get back in the Marine Corps but they actually don't take prior service) I had even a GIRLFRIEND that truly helped me fvck that up so bad that I ended up with an OTH from the Guard... because I couldn't show up to drill...not gonna go into detail but her and her family did nothing but help me screw that all the way up. I feel like maybe society would be better off if something like this was made available for everyone, for schools to have classes like this, not maybe the war prep but the; personal discipline, leadership, mentorship and confidence building. Honestly the 2nd Amendment calls for a "well-regulated Militia" which means a well trained and well disciplined Militia. Any civilian should be able to take one of these training courses without having to actually sign up for 4 years of fighting stupid wars that have nothing to do with the freedoms of Americans. We need an American Militia Academy, free for young adults. All young men should be trained to arms in case they need to defend themselves someday.

Army vet here from the 90's. We were hit and punched and kicked in training. There was a lot of fights after lights out because people got mad at those who screwed up and got the platoon in trouble. The training was hard as hell some days and the Drill Sergeants were not nice and were not interested in what our problems were. A few guys committed suicide... it happened on occasion. Some would jump, others tried drinking bleach or some other horrible stuff. We were all calorie restricted and on occasion were forced to skip meals. You would sit down and start eating and a Drill Sargent would come in and start yelling for everyone to leave the mess hall immediately and off you would go to training only to eat some crumby MRE later on in the field. Everyone had to pull a lot of guard duty, fire watch and KP. Every single morning was inspection after cleaning the barracks. The psychological part was brutal. The windows on the barracks were screwed shut and the heater turned up high. Showers were every 3 days at the most. We stank like hell. The obstacle course and the tower were easy for us and at least we were outside. We had to work (detail work) on Saturdays and Sundays if you did not go to church. And we didn't call no girl 'Sir'. And we did an absolute (bleep) load of long distance running and marching. That was Fort Jackson in the early 90s. I wish I could do the Air Force training these days. I would laugh all the way through it with a big cheesy grin.

VMI is an institution with continuous and permanent questions over what happens behind its secretive doors. It’s a system developed by people who think military training is what they see in Full Metal Jacket and 1950’s training manuals. A system who’s enforces are the pervious victims means they know no better and think violence and intimidation is admirable. Of all the boot camps and training programs shown in this 2.5 hour video only one was dehumanising and only one had its students exclusively talk about how genuinely horrible and shocking the conditions are. And frankly if you think walking slowly is intimidating then you’re weird.

I did North Georgia College and State University (NGCSU is another Senior Military College). A lot less BS and when I was there nearly 1/4 of the cadets were combat vets so there was real knowledge transfer. @@darylovaltine Most of the cadets were enlisted in the Georgia National Guard. It was common to see cadets that just came from a tour and were back home for a bit. If they got deployed again the school was accustomed to having the student either going "inactive" until they returned or having all of their coursework go online. Needless to say their military science grade was an automatic "A" ha.

I loved Air Assault School. I thought the obstacle course was easy, and i did extremely well on the 12 mile run. I loved Army obstacle courses. But then again I was a pretty super athlete from college, a track and cross country runner and ran a marathon. I was a 2LT in the MP Corp when I went through, OMG so many years ago, hehehe 😀😀

19:44 its easier because the weight she is lifting is about 30% less than the men in the video, it's similar to pull ups, if your weight is low and you have decent muscle mass you can easily do 10 pull ups, however push ups might give you trouble. The same here not having to move 200+ pounds make doing maneuver's about 10x easier than for the people who weigh a bit more. I'm 135-140 at 5'11 I can easily do pull-ups can barely do push ups, give me a rope i'll climb 20+ feet no problem at all. Most would have lots of trouble doing that. I also have zero stamina, I'm a burst of energy not a slow burn of energy. I believe i don't breathe correctly for long situations, I have a habit of holding my breath or not breathing while focusing on things. Which makes it hard to have any amount of endurance

They get their college education paid for, and in return they are required to serve for so many years. They also don’t go to officer school separately and instead go to officer school at the same time. So it is college, basic training, and officer school all into 1, for free. And they join the military as a commissioned officer, meaning they skip a couple ranks and therefore have a higher starting pay.

Roughly 75% to 80% of US military age HS grads DO NOT meet the minimum standards to join the US military for either physical, mental or psychological reasons. This is contrary to a common myth that the military is not where the best of America's youth goes. In contrast, virtually 100% (HS grads) ARE fully qualified to go on to college.

Air assault school - like airborne school, but not. "Air Assult!!!". Is that in case you forget where you are or what you are? What next - ground assault school??? Gound Assault!!! Or maybe "Air Defence!!!!" They can yell it out while. they sip their coffee sitting in their office chairs and air conditioned vans. Trying to get the same cachet as the airborne - whatever that is worth. Seems really try hard. I don't understand the US military's obsession with affirmations. Wait the grad exercise on that "so hard" Air Assault Army school is a 12 mile march? We routinely did 15 plus mile marches in Infantry School in the Marines, 30 plus miles a couple times in the actual Fleet. And the big difference between Army and Marines for pack marches is in the Marines you have to do them wearing your flak and kevlar where as from what I've heard in the Army they don't. Makes it a lot tougher wearing that body armor.

That's for a purpose: the recruits need to know what each of their senior officers or higher-up looks like. It's not a random thing: these hundreds of recruits are from all over the US (some from cult-like or family backgrounds that don't believe in science and disease prevention/reduction methodologies as prescribed by doctors and researchers), whereas the officers have been there for a while, as established GIs, who've been tested monthly. Can't have severe communicable diseases, airborne of otherwise, impacting the readiness of the Air Force, the most important far-flung branch of the US armed forces.

When I was with 1/61 Cav in Afghan, Air assault was continuously a logistical, operational and utter disaster in every single step involving warfighting. It was a literal bureaucratic joke. I still hear "Air Assault" and think of stranded, dehydrated, starving troops who are using their t-shirts as toilet paper with dead radios and uniforms that after two days looked much like a 2-year homeless person.

There are some objective realities that aren't easy for some generations to acknowledge. - Right now we are living in the time with the most people on the planet including the past AND the forseeable future. - The US military at or around the last decade of the Cold War was the best of any military in a lifetime relative to leadership, doctrine, values, cohesion and toughness. Some technologies and weapons have improved but not enough to make up for serious degradations in all those qualities listed.
