😳 Bootleg Anime Figures are Getting Too Good 😳

I have been wanting to make a tutorial of helping people new to the hobby of figure collecting differentiate bootleg from genuine anime figures (still work in progress) when I came across this impressive-looking bootleg of a 1/4 scale Lucifer figure from the seven sins. This is like a reminder to everyone to be careful and you can't rely on pictures only anymore when buying figures, especially online.

This a true evolution on bootleg figures manufacturing processes. A few years ago, it was to easy to differentiate between the bootlegs and the genuine ones, today the only solution to avoid a potential bootleg is to buy the figures on pre order time frame. Can see what you mean when you are looking at it from a distance, though on the close up shots you do start to see things are a little off but it is a little scary how close they have gotten to the original.

imo, its for those who missed on the pre orders or the product is discontinued, so its getting rare, therefore the aftermarket price skyrocketed, practically impossible to buy without putting out ridiculous amounts of money.

I will be buying a lot of bootlegs, authentic, 3d printed, custom, re painted etc figures. I will have a huge collection of figures which will number in the thousands over time. When it comes to the 1/4 bunny figures the majority of mine will be bootlegs because they cost too much money so instead of paying anywhere from 200 dollars to 1,000 dollars or more I will be paying 40 dollars to 100 dollars for the majority of them. Also I have come across nude 1/4 bunny figures which I will also be buying.

Same man. I’ve come across bootleg figures that are very good quality, so I’ve started collecting the 1/4 bunny figures. I use to hate bootleg, but looking at the price and quality, there’s no way I’m gonna pay 10 times the price for the original one haha.

Figures are not just about plastics - the materials are the lowest cost part of figures. Most of the time you're paying for the license of the character and the series with genuine products - that's how you support the people working in the creative industry. Technically, all recast garage kits are also bootlegs. Products of 3d printing are also also bootlegs. There's absolutely no relationship between authenticity and quality of a product. What makes a product genuine is paying for the licensing and copyright. If you are willing to pay more, even bootleggers can produce at a quality similar to the genuine one.

I dont buy bootlegs myself but its the manufacturers fault these bootlegs exist. The greed is too high especially nowadays, so people with less money or different mentality like "nah i wont pay for a figure more than a few bucks" obviously will rush to bootleg sellers/makers. Genuine manufacturers the ones who feeds these bootleg makers because they scare away "collectors" and fans with their prices.

Nowadays there are more and more Chinese genuine figure manufacturers with more affordable prices ( 9-16k yen price range) amd same or better quality than the "japanese ones". (Yes "japanese" because everything is manufactured and made in China)

At this point I've been thinking about just buying a bunny figure on aliexpress I'm not paying over 500 bucks for a figure and or more. The one I want at least is so overpriced in the aftermarket and was only around 150 bucks when pre-order was happening. Disappointing that sometimes we have to get bootlegs just to feel satisfied for having a figure that is astronomical in price.

I must say, I been a vederant weeb and too see bootlegs coming to this quality is uncanny. I remember going to Comic Paradise and to see the details rising in quality is honestly worring. But still Im glad people like you giving some attention to this.

The easiest way to differentiate original from bootlegs is the price. If it's too good to be true, it's probably a bootleg no matter how good it looks. The problem is when a local figure shop purposely inflates the pricing of their bootleg merchandise to mislead people into believing it's the real thing, making it hurts even more when you paid so much for a fake product. I certainly can see this Lucifer figure fetching US$100+ easily in some local stores, given a genuine one goes for $250, when it actually fetches for only $40 in China.

It's not good when these bootlegs are becoming more like the real versions. At the end of the day you won't get any more of your favourite series if you don't support the anime studio producing it and these bootlegs are becoming a very attractive alternative.

Lack of rereleases for many characters also makes these attractive. Can't really fault someone who would buy the legit version, but don't want to pay 2x the price on aftermarket.

i recently bought a super sonico figure from a store in my country. I noticed her box was discolored, and decided to google… Turns out, she was unauthentic! I dont even know if i wouldve been able to tell if i didnt have the box 🤣

You are sooo right, ten years ago was a shame for me to buy bootlegs, cause they look horrible, i have a lot (an expensive) figures and nendoroids from HLJ , but step by step bootlegs are reached and incredible quality 🙀 Another problem it is now common original firgures are comming with deffects 😡 you can check reviews, that is unforgivable for a figure over 200$ 😡 in this last years i went to bootlegs when is impossible to find an a reasonable prices. If original figures want to sell and keep the fans to buy they figure they need to offer something more than a "license" 😡 2 months ago i preordered a Teddybear Hunter from native and 2 Kanon Mannoji (native and Lovely) payed over 600$ with shipping and dutty taxes, and i'm affaid they are comming with imperfections 😡

Yeah I’m collecting Naruto shf. I cannot afford to buy all of them so I just bought the best selection naruto original but every other character was 200-700 dollars so I just bought 2 bootleg sage mode to try and make a sage naruto out of these 2 figures to my original and I bought a sasuke who needs a few touches and joint fixing it overall cost me 40 dollars and I’m not dissatisfied one bit.

Usually if you want to play safe and make sure you get the genuine stuff, you gotta get it from Japan. some people sell authentic ones off the factory line that were discarded cuz they have mild defects (like slightly off colours or hair that sits different) I saw one raph for like $200aud the other day. You can barley tell the difference, I’d definitely recommend them over bootlegs since they’re actually from the og manufacturer, and look identical. Especially for figures with high aftermarket ^^

A lot of Bootleg figures are no longer cheap, since the process to make these fakes are becoming more and more refined making it harder to define what's fake and what's real the prices for bootlegs have gone up in price over the last year or so. Hentai bootleg figures use to cost about $40 to $60 USD but now they are like $60 to $80.

Inflation nowadays affects everything, but one major problem with bootlegs is the sellers themselves. In order to give the impression of a "premium" product with decent quality, some of them intentionally inflate the prices. It's psychology, because people tend to associate a higher price with higher quality. And then there's the crazy expensive shipping costs nowadays.

China's e-commerce platform Taobao. Basically, mainland China version of Aliexpress, so it's likely you'll be able to find it on Aliexpress too. I also buy my genuine figures on Taobao. This bootleg was a deliberate purchase, simply because i was curious after seeing the feedback from other people who bought one.
