Great video: Please add "Extend Growing Season" to your benefits slide: "MOTIVATIONS & CONSIDERATIONS OF FARMER & NRCS. Also, what gauge and outside diameter (OD) metal frame tubing do you recommend for the different size greenhouses?

The video and file located on your site was very helpful; I did the math and if the grant comes out to about $3 per square foot, that's about $9,000 for a 3,000 square foot hoop house. I priced one on your site for $18,426.99 and that's a big difference. The man at our local USDA office told me that the grant should cover most of the materials cost to build this. What am I missing here?

Grant funding has not caught up with increased inflation. Grants can fluctuate with the grading system in place during the initial visit. Some sites qualify for more or less depending on factors that can be found in video description link. Most hoop houses from other companies do not include hip/base boards which additionally must be purchased locally. Same with the end walls and doors. Most bids also tack on shipping at the end. All of that is included on our kits. We would be happy to discuss further via email including working with your agent.

I guess I still don't understand. Do we have to already have a farming business? Do we need a business entity set up already? Or can an individual apply with a business plan?

Do you need a business entity if you are in some type of partnership. The main qualification for both an individual and a business entity is ownership of the land.

This may change from state to state - and also what area of each state you are in - but from what I know of the area I am in, as a NRCS employee, yes you have to have had some agricultural experience on your prior year tax documentation before we can assist you. This is to make sure that we are truly assisting those who are serious about agriculture. There is also a cap on how much income you make per year before we can no longer assist you as well, though it is relatively high and most producers don't hit this cap (this might also vary by area). If you have agricultural proceeds on your tax documentation you may apply as an individual if you own or control the land for the duration of the service life, and have owned it for at least 12 months (may vary by region). If your business owns the land, then you would have to apply as the business as it would be the owner of the land. Either way I would highly recommend getting things up and running for a year first anyway and making sure you can keep up with the workload of the summer either way before investing in these building's or any other conservation practice. while yes over the course of their life they pay for themselves, if your only going to use them for 1-2 years and then abandon them they are wasted money. if you don't enjoy it, its not worth so Id say waiting a year and use basic tools first before doing major investments like this. On the other hand in my area if you have less then 10 years of experience you will count as a beginning farmer and get a much better rate of cost share, so if you are going to do major investments like this I definably recommend getting started with major projects like this in year 2-3 to make sure you can benefit from the increased rates, once you are sure you will commit to making this a occupation. hope this helps a bit.
