If your cups smell bad and have a bunch of gunga in them after a dish cycle, then it's time you became a warrior and defeated the ancient evil lurking deep inside your dishwasher's filter. Over time, food gets trapped in certain parts of your dishwasher, and it sits there year after year in some cases. Depending on the level of neglect, it'll be quite the horrific scene. But fear not, I am with you to help you clean your Maytag dishwasher.

I just purchase that product to give it a try before I try to clean or tear the unit apart to clean filter. but after the paper seal was removed I place the cleaner on bottom rack as suggested to do. Unfortunatelym the wax seal did not open and thus after 3 hr. washing the liquid was still found in the bottle. What happened? did the water not get hot enought to break seal? So at a quantrum at what part needs to be replaced for that or will the cleaning the filter do the job. I am confused at what my next move should be?.

I am a 70 year old woman and with the help of this video fought the NASTY gunga and saved a major repair bill. I didn't realize that this maintenance existed or needed to be done. So, 2 years into buying this dishwasher you can imagine how DISGUSTING the grate was. By watching this, I was able to correct the water leakage (gunga was messing up the water float & not draining properly). This was a super video with easy to follow steps. Sorry you got cut with a glass shard-but you saved many others from the same fate or worse. A BIG Thank you!

@@Bootstrappin You and me both. No amount of dishwasher cleaners will cut through the gunga. After I followed through with your video, I then ran a cup of distilled white vinegar through on the hottest setting. Then after that I ran a cup of baking soda through with the same long, hot setting (machine being empty doing this). The gunga overhaul freed up the stuck float with the help of the vinegar & baking soda washes. No more leaks. I will be doing this maintenance every few months-it's worth not having the appliance man paying a costly visit. My Maytag had different rack clips, but once I figured how to get the rack out, the rest went as you showed (minus the toilet plunger & helmet-nice illustrations) Thanks again :-)

We moved into a house with this kind of dishwasher a year ago. I've cleaned plenty of dishwashers in my time, but this one daunted me. I've had this video saved for half a year and finally felt brave enough to tackle this today. THANK YOU so much for the clear (and funny) instructions!! My dishwasher was a little different in minor ways (i have to take the end caps off the rails to get the top drawer off, for example) but overall it was the same and it worked. Also, while that trap was truly full of gunga, the underside of the grate-like ring was the wildest part for me-- it was caked with what I can only assume was fat residue on the underside D: I would like to physically hurt whoever came up with this extremely user-unfriendly design, but hey, at least I know how to do it now. Piece of advice for anyone out there: wear a mask with a filter (I have one I use when I needed to bleach my basement) because it helps with the smell. Pretty sure without it I would've gagged at some point...
@Bootstrappin
@Bootstrappin 2 жыл бұрын
Oh man yeah, depending on the amount and age of the gunga, I didn't even consider that it may have a very... pungent smell. That's what I suspect too, that it's basically just a cooked ball of grease, oils, and proteins. Gross!

Thanks for the instructions. I have a similar model, and would like to add a couple of things. First, I didn't have to unclip or remove the tube in the back to clean the filter. There was just enough play to move the bottom elbow to the right, which allowed me to separate the tubing from the bottom of the dishwasher. The main filter with the fine mesh can be cleaned under running water using a toothbrush while at the same time plugging the bottom drain tubing with your finger or palm. This lets (at least part) of the filter gunk to float free, so when you let the flow resume, some of that junk falls out the bottom. Lightly banging the filter against the sink as the water is inside it helps a little. To put it back, line up three places; the tube that goes into the hole on the forward right section, the U shaped cover that goes over the small tube a little farther back (close to the center), and the support at the forward left. I had to rotate the filter counter clockwise to get it to set in completely. Also, at the back of the top rack, there is a white plastic cover that can be removed with a screwdriver. I found a lot of gunk there, as well, that cleans with a toothbrush under running water. Then just line up the big notch in the plastic with the one-way valves on the inside, and snap back in place. Finally, you might as well clean the inner bottom and sides of the dishwasher door while you're at it.

Yo Dude! You just saved me 500 bucks or so with this hilarious but useful video. I was disgusted by the fact that my not-too-old dishwasher was already shot! I didn't realize that this had a filter system rather than the old-school garbage-disposal style waste system. I did indeed find the filter entirely clogged with a revolting accretion of detritus and bleached remains of old carcasses, etc - so having held my stomach in check, I removed the hunga-bunga-lunga and reassembled the machine. I now have high expectations of it operating properly again! Thank you for taking the time to create this bit of wisdom!

Happy to help! I have no idea why this isn't in the manual or guides. Maytag claims the filter is "maintenance free", but the fact that an eldritch abomination can make itself feel at home there kinda proves that statement false.

On the top of the clip on the inside of the track, push it in with a screwdriver and the push up on the bottom of the clip in an upwards motion and the entire part will pop up. Removal of the other parts were exactly as you showed; however, removal of the bottom spinner/spraywash arm on mine has a plastic piece under it with little tangs that stick out. Grab those and turn it counterclockwise a quarter turn and it will pop up. My unit has a macerator, so it did not have the second filter, but there is a screen that sits under the metal tray on top you might want to wash. Thank you so much for the help. Thanks for the video. I cleaned our washer. Surprisingly, after 7 years of use it was very clean. I think its better to wash once with vinegar and then with baking soda to keep the system fresh

After following the instructions in the video, cups and plates were still not getting clean. Since the dishwasher only has 3 moving parts, upper sprayer, lower sprayer, and a pump (maybe two pumps) I figured my issue had to be with the pump. I ran a short cycle with a cup of vinegar hoping to clear any calcium deposits. Afterward, I noticed a white speck in the lower sprayer jet. Taking out the lower spray arm I saw that several jets were semi-blocked by what looked like small rocks, probably calcium chunks. One jet even had a piece of wire mesh lodged in it. I removed what I could and rinsed the lower arm thoroughly. I can now report the dishwasher has been restored to its original ability to clean cups and dishes. Thanks again for a great video.

Nicely done. That sounds like hard water build up - how's the water quality in your neck of the woods?
@mavwitt
@mavwitt Жыл бұрын
@@Bootstrappin The water here is extremely hard. It turns out that the grinder screen disintegrated and was allowing large particles to travel into the upper and lower sprayers. I even found bits of the grinder screen lodged in the jets. That was the wire mesh I mentioned previously. I contacted Maytag (Whirlpool) and they are sending a new grinder blade. But I think this may be a sealed unit so I may be requesting a new motor assembly. I don't want to tear it apart until the new grinder is here. I will update on the progress.

@@mavwitt that makes sense. Hard water is no friend of water based appliances. You seem to be quite adept at repairs and DIY, have you considered installing a water softener for your place?

Thank you so much. I had looked a long time ago to find out how to get that filter out. Your video was more clear. You also were NOT kidding about the abomination in that lower filter. It was truly terrible. No wonder we had tummy issues lately even with bleach in the cycle. Bless you for helping me take the monster out of my dishwasher.

Thank you very much for the video. Until our dishes started showing signs of not coming clean I didn't even KNOW there was a filter. When I finally got it out, what I found was the stuff of nightmares. It seemed to be an amalgam of old paper labels, hair and soap scum with the occasional piece of veggie. Thankfully - and I am SO grateful for this - it was scent free. Which is especially good because I had to pick most of it out with my fingers. By the way, the back of that metal dome thingy on the filter has VERY sharp tabs on it. Imagine a paper cut but from steel, and much deeper.

Awesome video. My dishwasher was leaking and I hope cleaning the sludge out of this thing after eight years of use allows the water to drain faster and allows the dishwasher to work more efficiently. I also ran a 1/2 cup of CLR through it to help get the remainder of crud off the surfaces of everything. Thank you.

This was a SUPER helpful video. I managed each step, except I could not get a good view of the clips along the back wall. One commenter mentioned they could break. My husband offered to help, and without the knowledge of potential breakage, opened the clips easily. We got everything apart - ewwww. The reassembly was easy and the first new load is running. Thanks a million!
