This video got me very excited. Mine should arrive tomorrow! I have been lurking on this channel for over a year now and you convinced me to get the Note Air. It took me a long time to make a decision because it is expensive for my budget, but I spent the year missing this device on my workflow and imagining how easier it would make my life, so I finally pulled the trigger. When the Note Air 2 was announced, I had the impression that it was an more like a "Note Air 1.2" and I was wondering if it was worth the price increase but I went for it anyway. I guess we will only have the final answer when the 3.2 firmware gets to the Note Air 1 but for now I am very satisfied. It looked really fast and it made such a big impression on someone who uses the Note Air 1 daily, so I think it will be a nice experience. Can't wait for the full review, and can't wait to finally test my first eink note tablet.

@@xcacahuate if you are looking beyond price, i guess the decisive thing is what do you plan to use it on. I don't think it would be a comfortable device to take it to bed or to the park for a leisure reading. The Nova line is a more hybrid device, you can use if for work and leisure even if it is not perfect for either.

@@diffabergus4268 I bought the Note Air2 for Android 11 & Google Play. Supernote's A5X screen, pens, cover & pen loop is superior. The writing experience is better but is a limited device on networks/apps as it is a fork of Android 8. Supernote feels like a real notebook experience and BOOX needs to catch up with that. Wonder how the new pen feels on your Note Air with the ESR (?) screen protector? Or on a doodroo? Is that magnet possibly better on the original device than the original pen?
@MyDeepGuide3 жыл бұрын
It is better than the original, but it's not as good as on Note Air, because Note Air 2 device also has an improved magnet, so combination of those both make a substantial difference. As for the new pen and nib, I tried it last night on my Note Air and it feels excellent. The structure of the screen protector is different, so the ESR that I have is a bit more smooth and quiet, and the Note Air 2 one is a bit more papery, but not raspy or rough, just a fine, but noticable difference. The pen and the nib feel excellent on both surfaces, just a different flavor, if you will :)

Sure, I can do it, but unfortunately Remarkable as a platform hasn't grown enough or in a direction that would make it more competitive with productivity devices such as these. But yeah, it will be useful to get an accurate perspective where things are and where these devices are in relation to each other.

@@MyDeepGuide Exactly my thoughts. To be honest the only thing that bothered me is the writing experience because I really like having that close - to - paper feel which Remarkable has. I just compared them back to back, and hard to believe, but Note Air 2 has an overall better writing feel and experience. @@MyDeepGuide it makes total sense. I think that it may even be part of our nature, this "once we have a better thing/emotion/experience" we get this "dependence" from the better things. This was a nice intro to the Note Air 2. I’m surprised by the speed differences. It makes me wonder if the type of memory changed as well. I’m hoping you can test to see if voice to text recognition is improved or faster on the new system. Does a faster system speed up the OCR function of the a note? The Boox Note Air 2 is now available from Amazon and other sites (e.g., Komplett...). These sites do list a pen as part of the purchase, but do not list a sleeve (as some reviewers have referred to). I.e., can I put a Windows app on the Note Air secondary screen and use the pen to write on the Windows app? ('that would make a laptop with pen support less necessary...)

Hey Voja, will you be reviewing the Note 5 as well? I'd be interested to see it compared to the Note Air 2 as the technical specs are almost the same. I'm interested in more responsiveness and battery life, and if it comes in a lighter package... there's room to ponder. Specially since the color scheme seems to be the same.

As writing experience, is it close to Remarkable 2 or it still feels a little glassy?
@MyDeepGuide3 жыл бұрын
I am glad you asked that, because it forced me to check it right not on the spot, and believe it or not, in the direct comparison now with their own respective default pens, Note Air 2 feels, sounds and overall has not marginally, but quite obviously better writing experience than the RM2. I found it hard to believe, so I tested and retested, and yeah, going back to Remarkable feels harder, more glassy and less precise. If there is a speed difference, I can't feel it or notice it, which means that the Note Air 2 is probably in the low 40ms or maybe even 30's category, I'll know more when I do the DESTA test, but subjective feel is that it's as fast, but considerably better feeling on all fronts than the RM2. Yet another very big surprise for me from this device.

(12:33) I see Boox still uses Samsung Galaxy (One UI 1.x) style navigation gestures. My guess now is that they tried Google Pixel style gestures, which I prefer, but it didn't work out for them in internal testing. The Google Pixel style gestures, which AFAIK, Google recommended other device manufacturers to use, are: 1. Swipe up: Home 2. Swipe up and hold: Recent apps 3. Swipe from the edge without holding down on the edge first: Back

@@MalcolmCosenza Interesting. I'll try XDA Navigation Gestures even though that's not compatible with Android 11 due to removed features, as I kept the APK files for the paid version that's no longer available. However, the only removed feature is that Android 11 removed UI overscan support that was used by the app to hide the navigation bar, but Boox doesn't have an on-screen navigation bar anyway.

I have Onyx Boox Note Air, and I think it is generation 1.5 -- it still has the old pen with a sharp and hard plactic tip, but the position of the magnet on the pen, and the position of magnet on the side of the tablet is very faintly marked with a slightly raised plastic on the pen, and printed in slightly lighter blue than the rest of the case on the tablet. It is not marked in orange / light blue like in Onyx Boox Note Air 2. You need to know where to look - I have noticed those markings only after this watching this video. The magnet might be stronger as well than in 1st gen., but I have no way of confirming this. [I hope that this time my comment would not vanish]
@LynneLaRochelle3 жыл бұрын
Well that seals it. I should have waited! I love my RM2 for the low latency, but I’ve already used up 20% of the memory. Now that writing on the Boox is so great, there’s really no reason to go with the remarkable. At least that’s how it seems to me. I’d be interested to know how similar you think the two writing experiences compare, Voja.
@MyDeepGuide3 жыл бұрын
Another comment actually asked that question as well, so I just did the test, and re-test, and another, and another, to be sure. But yeah, now I am sure. Note Air 2 has considerably better writing experience than the RM2 when using their respective default pens. When I use the same pen on both devices, they feel incredibly similar, but RM2 feels a little harder, a bit more glassy and a tiny bit less precise than the Note Air 2. We are talking about very fine differences here, but when using the Remarkable pen on the RM2 and the new Boox pen on the Note Air 2, Note Air 2 wins on pretty much all fronts. I can't see or feel that it's slower, but it probably is, however it's clearly fast enough so that if there is a difference in writing speed latency, it clearly doesn't matter. But on everything else, more comfortable, more precise and more pleasant than the Remarkable 2. Who would have thought that this device would bring so many surprises!? I certainly didn't, not in the slightest.

Thank you for the great review! Would you recommend using the note air 2 with the protective case, or is it better to carry it with the sleeve and use it without the case like you do with the nova air? Also considering that now on Amazon they only sell the new version of the case and a lot of people report the corners breaking after few months.
@MyDeepGuide3 жыл бұрын
I think that really depends on your habits and use case scenario's. I personally have used the thin flip cover with the sticky tape and never had a single issue with it, but that's because I use it in protected environment, most of the time. Nova Air on the other hand is mobile and always with me, and as such i wanted the folio, because it offers more complete protection, from all sides, the stylus can't get lost if it detaches from the magnet, etc. So it really depends on how and what you'll use it for. The big cover, while it offers more protection I didn't opt for, simply because these solutions already worked well for me, so I didn't have the need for it.

After watching your videos for the Note Air2, I ordered on and I'm really pleased I did. I mainly use it for note taking; the writing experience and AI transcription is brilliant (even with my atrocious handwriting). One thing I'm struggling with is finding replacement nibs for the supplied pen in the UK. I keep being directed back to the nibs for the original Note Air, but if I understand correctly the nibs are different and contribute to the fantastic writing feel. Is that right? I may have to wait for the nibs to become available in the UK, but in the meantime, is there a different nib you'd recommend as a stop gap?

One of the major reasons I haven't gotten a boox device is the violation of the gpl2. Given your experience and preference for them as a daily driver, is it safe to assume you aren't concerned they might be doing something weird with your data? Also KITTY. Please pet the kitty for me. :D
@MyDeepGuide3 жыл бұрын
I am aware of the concerns regarding that issue and that is something I have asked them about, not having gotten any clear answer really. Internally, for myself I decided to give it a year after initially raising the point with them and see if something will be done. So stuff has been done and updated regularly, for example, they are publishing their Android Test project on GitHub on a very regular basis and there you have partial source code, but not a complete one. So, while I do understand that some people are concerned about this and think that they are completely not complying, but that's partially true, there is a significant chunk of the source code out there and is being updated. But, partial compliance is still a violation of the GPL licence and seeing how this has not changed now with the Android 11 platform either, I will be listing it as a con on Boox devices from now on. That being said, i am not concerned about it at all, literally 0% because I know that any device that is connected online compromises absolutely privacy and security. GPL compliance doesn't guarantee squat, because if someone has nefarious intentions to covertly gather data, they can implement that in so many more elegant and more comprehensive ways, than building it directly into the system. The idea that the system is designed around such a thing is paranoid and biased, because when other, non-China based companies are doing it (and they are) no one is raising any concerns. I and others did net traffic check and yes, there is a report that Boox devices "phone home" but the packets sent out are so tiny that they can't contain any relevant personal data and are much more consistent to server status and device pinging rather than anything else., Plus, fire up any Android app and you'll see far more disconcerting network activities, and web browsing is even worse. So in conclusion, for me personally, I think that now that they started to sell their devices from US and EU their devices need to comply fully with the GPL licence, but no, I am not worried in the slightest about it, because of the reasons stated above.

Thank you Voja for your interesting guides on all these E-Ink Tablets. Alternatively purchasing via amazon adds a lot to the price. Would be interested to know what are your thoughts on this?
@MyDeepGuide2 жыл бұрын
I am able to purchase it normally in Norway through a regular tech store and it follows and allows for normal, Norway laws specific returns, so I think that people should read the terms and conditions of the store they are using, or if unsure, ask the store itself beforehand, to avoid any misunderstandings, as these things will be country and store specific. As far as alleged legality of things goes, I haven't seen or heard of anything even remotely close to what you mentioned. Some people may be used to certain aspects of purchasing so much that they automatically assume things, but assuming something is not the same as a company or a store doing something wrong, especially when terms and conditions are readily available and when it is easy to verify if a certain purchase has a flexible or a rigid return policy. If you ask for my personal opinion, I personally think that it's the individual's responsibility to ask what they are interested in and inform themselves before commiting to a purchase. I hear of people being "shocked" by utter basics such as tech import taxes or shipping costs, which of course is completely silly. If someone is an adult enough to handle their own finances, then they need to be doing that with a responsibility of an adult and make informed purchases and decisions and not place the blame on others when they face a disappointment because of own assumptions. That's just how I look at these things, I know some people will disagree, but you asked me, so I shared :)

This is why a dry cloth, or in really smudgy cases, eyeglass wipes can help and do the job safely. That being said, what you describe sounds like a faulty device, and I would at least contact the distributor with photographs and report of the state of the device, because those issues you describe fall under the standard warranty of most of the devices.
