Booyzynkraal Bush Camp | Wild Bush Camping | October 2021

South Africa, a land of untouched beauty. Our travels in this episode takes us to the Booyzynkraal Bush Camp, only just a few clicks away from the bustling City of Emalahleni (Witbank), Mpumalanga. Having been inspired to visit this place by content aired on KZbin by Ed, Ryan and Chris (Overlanding Escape), Travel Gigolo and by Juba’s Journey, there was no two thoughts about it.
Me, My Boy and our Disco4 simply had to visit this place and I must say that we were astounded by the beauty of this landscape. We visited just out of the cold winter and whilst ample green was visible, there was nothing more serene and breathtaking as the hues of brown painting the landscape both on the ground and the rocky outcrops of the Greater Olifants River Gorge.
To Theo and his staff, a great thank you for the time spent chatting and as well for a very awesome Wild Bush Camping Experience. We loved every moment at the Hippo River Camp and will be back as soon as we can. We also used this opportunity to test our gear and I must say that we fully succeeded in being self sufficient, astonishingly the “dry toilet” does take some getting used to 😂 (LOL).
The fishing was also great, being a first to fish in a river and not the lakes that we are used to, was a bit challenging however the Olifants River did not disappoint, with my boy landing a beautiful almost 5.2Kg Mirror Carp, which we safely released back into the Olifants.
In the same token, shortly after our visit, we learnt that there was a massive fire at the Bush Camp and with this we sincerely hope that damage to the landscape was not too significant and that all will be good as soon as the rains start falling.
Boozynkraal is a 600ha nature farm on the Olifants River, nestled between Witbank Dam, Middelburg Dam, and Loskop Dam. The farm boasts rough but scenic tracks, 4x4 with low range is a definite must, amazing rock formations and a diverse variety of trees, animals and birds.Guests can enjoy bird watching, and make full use of the fantastic photographic opportunities. Game roaming the area include Kudu, Waterbuck, Eland, Impala and several smaller antelope species. Brown hyena and porcupines have also been spotted. Keep a sharp look out for the rare Leopard sighting.
Booyzynkraal River Camp
Camping is in a large cleared area on the bank of the Olifants River. This truly tranquil spot is ideal for larger groups and 4x4 club gatherings.
Activities from the river camp include game viewing, hiking, mountain biking, bird watching and catch and release fishing. A guided 4x4 trail (Grade 3-5) is available. The river camp is only accessible by 4x4 with high ground clearance with diff locks, offroad trailers & caravans are also welcome-at this campsite.
The camp has no electricity, there are flush toilets and donkey supplied with borehole water. Fire wood is available from their Honesty Wood Shop, the wood is good for a bushveld fire but needs some extra charcoal for a good braai. Both hippo and crocodile have been spotted in the river, so unfortunately no swimming allowed.
