The French occupation of territories in the pacific is a disgrace. We're in the 21st Century, it's time to leave colonialism behind and let them govern themselves in freedom. the French also have a huge debt to the Polynesians for what they did to Muroroa Atoll.

Andrew, In the willingness to understanding your opinion of the French occupation being a shame and that of somehow the timeline of the twenty-first century in the current accepted Gregorian calendar having something toward this belief for what is known as Polynesia of the south Pacific requires possibly a few other truthful premises as to better ascertain facts prior to posts on this matter. Please consider: 1) Currently, the Unites States holds two other territories of accepted Polynesia, one being the new Polynesia named “Hawaii”, which stems from an ancient name of Raiatea and is closely east and viewable from Vavau (Bora Bora), and it is common knowledge of Hawaiian acceptance of the current “colonialism”; the second is American Samoa which also seems to thrive considerably better than their immediate “unoccupied” sister islands concerning health standards, life expectancy and other well known markers. 2) Nuclear testing in the Tuamotu / Puamotu archipelago has ceased at the end of the last century; it is to note that the three major nuclear powers ought to have known better, France being included, for any one of them to continue on such environmentally and destructive actions (for which in opinion I humbly agree on that point) and due to the solidarity of many French citizens, world conservation activists and Tahitian populace pressured to effectively cease these past actions. 3) Independent governance to an extreme in the current considered French Polynesian territories of Tahiti and her islands exists, with very little overlook of France, as such the example of Maiao (Teanuanuaiterai - te anuanua i te ra’i - “the rainbow and the sky”) and this was given existence as requested to those Polynesian island inhabitants per their willingness for individuality. 4) Further consideration for metrics ought to be considered as premise to argument for other non-French occupied Polynesian territories such as Samoa, example city and current capital of Apia which, in my humble opinion, is a fourth world country of poverty, lack of better health care, education, quality of life, et-cetera - it seems that their wish or unnaccepting of foreign caring (colonialism was it?) has given such (in)effective fruits after centuries. Human existence seems at times incomplete even with caring and the passing of time of lessons-learned toward the inhabitants of one area of the world, of in which we all reside, to the occupants of another part. The French have, unlike other past empires such as the Spaniards or Dutch in their occupied majority acquisitions, educated, cared for and protected from alien disturbance with the help of allies for nearly two centuries the caring of the Tahitian people which thrive world-wide as French citizens under the embrace of their Polynesian culture even to be able to continue to communicate, without admonishment and with future, to integrate onto the world stage, whilst keeping now alive their nine native spoken languages handed down through generations. It is fact that many Polynesians may better understand their providence in comparing those of whom have, and have not, been colonized. Te Atua ha’amaitihia ‘oe ‘ē i teie parauparau maita’i ‘ē ‘oa’oa au ‘ia o Andrew ‘oe, (God Bless you and this good talk from me to you Andrew) Moeava Tāne (my name stemming from the Puamotu atoll Makemo - Tahiti - current French Polynesia)
