Probably, audiences cannot understand why luggages of Chinese visitors are always full. This is because, almost of Chinese products (except famous brands) are expensive and old-fashioned after being exported and sold in developed countries. It feels like spending multiple times the price of a Porsche to buy an old Hyundai. That is why Chinese visitors prefer to purchase a lot of items with cheaper prices, better quality, and new styles, and carry them to other countries.

Because western food is very bland/plain and boring compared to asian food in general. That's why asians always try to take food to western countries and westerners pretty much never take food to asian countries. And when they do, the locals generally don't care because it can't compete with local food. As for chinese bringing food over. It's not just chinese, singaporeans, filipino, indonesians, malaysians, thais and many others do the same thing. It's just that the chinese ones often want to see if they can talk their way out of it. The rest give up quickly and pay the fine

I think those high fines are reduced by 50% if they immediately pay. I agree those $350, or less, fines are ridiculously low. FYI, a couple of weeks ago i returned home to Australia. I spent a week in Chicago and a couple of weeks in Peru. On the card I filled out before landing, i checked i was bringing in wood products. (My sisters gave me 3 beautiful wooden platters.) As i trudged through the many lines in the Sydney airport, a customs officer checked the card and asked me if the wood looked clean. Yes, I said. Without asking to see these items, the officer said, "That's fine" and waved me through the line. I moved to Australia 6+ years ago and became a citizen last year. Keeping my new country safe is important to me so I was disappointed that no check was done on the wood items I'd declared.

@FutureWorldXАй бұрын
Infringement notices at the airport as stated by Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry: "Under Commonwealth law, financial penalties, including infringement notice amounts, are calculated in ‘penalty units’. Section 4AA of the Crimes Act 1914 sets the dollar amount of one penalty unit. As of 1 July 2023 the amount of one penalty unit is set at $313. The amount payable under an infringement notice is specified in the notice. The minimum amount for Infringement notices issued at the airport for the alleged contravention of s 126(2), s 128(2), s 532(1) or s 533(1) of the Biosecurity Act is 2 penalty units ($626). However, if a traveller fails to declare goods of a kind known to pose a high level of biosecurity risk, and in doing so allegedly contravenes s 532 (1) or s 533 (1), the infringement notice amount increases to 6 penalty units ($1,878) or 12 penalty units ($3,756) depending on the risk of the goods. If a traveller conceals conditionally non-prohibited goods that are brought or imported into Australian territory, and in doing so allegedly contravenes s 186A(1), the infringement notice amount increases to 20 penalty units ($6,260). The amount payable on an infringement notice is not discretionary. It is important to note that biosecurity officers do not have the legal authority to make decisions on how many penalty units will apply to each infringement notice." So the amount is $1,878 or more if the food was not declared.

Why not incr fine for each time the same travelers bring food or other restricted items in, ie $360 first time then $500 etc? Some maybe bringing in for selling. Edit: start DNA testing meat products?

There are many Customs and BioSecurity officers working at the same time in Australian airports. The camera does not show them all.
