The deeper you go the higher is the water pressure. The best soution is to line the hole with a steel pipe to drop the concrete and pump the water out at the bottom.

This hole is 1000ft deep. It runs from 500 level to 1500 level. The diameter is only 8". This is in a mine in Sudbury Ontario. The "X" that Bubblewubble161 is referring to is only two water inlets that happen to have enough pressure to shoot across the hole, so there was really no obstacle to overcome. (Like star67 pointed out)

We actually have a well in our basement, but we had to get it bricked up because of fermentation gas in there. I don't know how old it is, but I remember seeing water in it as a child. What I'm trying to say is: Isn't it dangerous to go in such deep holes? Ours was probably far from 1000ft., we never climbed in and we still had to close the door on it.
