There's good reason to be careful when you pick up pieces of the UwMic9 system. Sure, it's hugely popular - but if you're not careful, you can buy the wrong version very easily and end up with a sub-par setup!

For these, the frequency really matters. Even if it seems that theres nothing else on those airwaves you might get a better result at other frequencies. Can happen due to reflections etc. Listen to the garbled „s“-sounds, they appear first when the system has issues at the current frequency. While the Sennheiser is definitely better at handling these issues you can still hear it happening with that system too. Been working with pro audio systems from Sennheiser, Shure, AKG etc for decades and this stuff is basically the performance you got from the high-end gear ten, twenty years ago.

Thank you for your realistic review, as I also experience the same sudden signal drop out problem, even I have the newer black version. One thing I would like to ask, which you have said in the video, the black version have "gain control" which you think might solve the problem. But I could not find "gain control" in the setting, instead I can found "mic sensitivity". Is "mic sensitivity" the feature you mention? Thank you.
@SolarFlightPro

Yes, mic sensitivity is what they call their input gain setting. It will allow you to adjust the levels on the transmitter so that they're not peaking, but it won't solve the dropout issue, unfortunately.

I really hope you continue with YouTubing. A lot of reviewers of camera tech on KZbin never use the equipment out on the field. Not to name names, but a lot of popular camera-reviewers only use their camera equipment to make videos about camera equipment. Pointless. I like hearing actual on-set experiences you've encountered. I've seen several of your ads, and I really enjoy them. (Question: What is your ultimate goal in film? More client work? Narrative? Documentary? Just curious.) I'm a few years out of high school, and though I've always made videos since I was a kid, I'm looking to finally jump into creating client work. I'm scared and nervous. And don't know where to start. My ultimate goal is to make actual narrative films, but that is a long way away, and I'm not sure what path to take. Regardless of my tangent, you create great stuff, and I hope to see more from you. I genuinely believe your channel can take off in the future. And when you get there, please don't become the Gerald Undone of KZbin. Be the next Film Riot of KZbin. Thank you, Garrett.

Thanks man, I'm hoping we can get more reviews and tips and tricks videos done as well. I enjoy making them, I've just not made the time for it until now. We're testing out some new kit on set all next week, so there's more to come once I've gotten comfortable with them! I'm glad you enjoy the ads! Our goal is more narrative, but when it comes to building out your kit and paying the bills, commercial stuff is a lot easier to manage. Everyone's path is different, for sure. I started my company about three months out of high school, and for the first three years I worked regular jobs while building up my client list. If you've not got any gear yet, get the best microphone you can afford and then buy a camera and start shooting stuff for friends. Fake commercials, silly short films, all that stuff lets you experiment and play around. MZED is a great learning tool as well for you to get more specific industry advice than most of youtube offers. Then offer a free commercial to one or two places so you have real clients, and set your pricing wherever you're comfortable from then on. Thank you for the kind words. We're big fans of Film Riot too, they're great! We did our "Boom Shot" series of videos to try to do something similar, but I'm working out how we can approach teaching concepts a little differently. Hopefully people enjoy what we do and share videos around with their friends!

I can't believe you can't adjust the mic input level on the transmitters ... half the people I mic up are clipping the whole time they talk. Glad you liked it! Thank you for watching! The Black Label Sarmonics might be worth a try, just avoid the yellow label ones. We've moved onto Sennheiser and we're pretty happy with them, but with any wireless setup there's the initial setup of scanning channels that you'll want to do for the clearest signal.

Thanks for the reply. We have been using the Sony ECMAW4 Bluetooth system for several years and can feed two units to a video camera. The sound is really good but the range is no more than 20 ft. One unit has fallen apart with wear so we are going to replace it with the same unit, at least we know it will work and will never drop (if close) the signal and never has interference of any kind even when close to fluorescent lights or power lines. Thanks again

My initial plan was to buy the Sennheiser single transmitter for around the $600 mark. But I really need the dual transmitters to be an option for me. My camera is a canon m50 and uses a 3.5mm in. Would the black label saramonic kit 2 be a good kit? Or is there something else I should be looking at that can run two transmitters? Again I was hoping spend around ~600 or less. Great video btw! Keep it up!

I'd say the black label is a good place to start, especially in that price range. You might also look at the Rode Wireless Go, which I believe has the same ability to send two transmitters to one receiver - although you'd need to get some lavs separately, like the Rode Smart Lav ($79, if I remember correctly). They've got built in batteries as well, so no fiddling with AAs.
@TenzaMotorsports
@TenzaMotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
@@SolarFlightPro the ability to replace the batteries, vs waiting for a charge, is actually a feature I want. The other thing I like is the locking jacks into the packs. I hear a lot of people will buy these lower priced systems and then use a rode or sennheiser mic. With my budget that would also be an option for me. I could get the black labels upgrade the mics and figure out a carry case for 600 ish

First of all, fantastic video. I just recently bought the 'black label' version of this system you referred to, and... it's a fail. It has exactly the same problem of the audio dropout that you had on your 'yellow label' system. Even after pulling the mic sensitivity down, the audio still fell out the bottom. At one point, there was no audio at all for about 4 seconds. This happened on two different paying jobs (creative rescue editing can only go so far) For a test, I hooked up one of my Sony Wireless systems (totally different frequency ranges) as well as the Saramonic and attached them to a mate of mine. Once again, the Saramonic dropped off, the Sony? Seamless. I even had a broadcast engineer friend, who uses wireless microphones for a news channel and knows every trick in the book to try and see if he could figure it out. He eventually told me to rather put them back in the box and forget about it. The only thing I could recommend is to monitor the audio out of the RX9 and listen for the drop off - because it will come - and hopefully it something that can be reshot. I'll need to consider trying to return them for a refund. If not, they are going to be a very expensive 'budget' piece of kit that I can do nothing with. I simply can't trust them on a production. Perhaps using them as a paper weight could be an option. Keep it up! Great work!

I'm sorry the black label ones didn't fix the issue for you, man, that sucks. We've been pretty happy with our Sennheiser kit since we shot this video, but I still go for a boom as often as I can! I appreciate your feedback. If it were me, I'd try to get my money back. Don't keep gear you can't trust! I'll be more careful about recommending things I haven't thoroughly tested myself in the future, just to be safe - although the fact that they haven't fixed this in the new version is mind-boggling.

I have the black version and it's frustrating that it still drops out even on short distances like 2-3 meters. I wanted a more professional solution to replace my digital saramonic and so far it has failed on every use. Yesterday I shot an hour and a half long lecture and I wisely placed a backup mic and recorder on the podium. The wireless signal is pretty unusable. Parts are, but it would randomly cut out and hiss. It adds stress to straightforward jobs.

While I didn't initially have the problems you were experiencing with the Yellow Saramonics, after only 2 years of use I'm looking to replace them. Not only did the dropouts go from unnoticeable to annoying, but the stiff plastic "strain relief" on the antennas has caused the outer covering (and in one case, the whole antenna) to break off. Like with you, support has been next to nonexistent. I only wish your review came earlier to save me this headache. P.S. Interesting that the TX-XLR9 hasn't failed me in the way yours has. Though I've mainly used dynamic mics, so perhaps that distortion is a function of the phantom power being turned on. Still shouldn't happen, but it might explain it.
@SolarFlightPro
@SolarFlightPro 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that, man. I always hope that I'm just unlucky, but I've seen a few people say something similar. Interesting point about the dynamic mics, I wish I would have had one to try out the phantom power theory. It may also just be that the NTG-3 signal is too hot for the transmitter - especially without any sort of gain control on the unit itself.

9:42 problem i think it's the Mic Sensitivity issue. When you use high Mic Sensitivity (around 10-11-12), that harsness/crunchy/over-sparkle treble appears. And one guest star we had, her voice was SO LOUD at times (when she's fired up/laughing) that the mic just can't keep up, it sounded really harsh & distorted even when i lower the Mic Sensitivity to 4. I hope you can make videos about this. Saramonic is "budget" friendly options, but it's not an option if it's not reliable.

I no longer have my kit, since I sold it to offset the cost of my Sennheiser system that I purchased. On my TX-XLR9, there was no Mic sensitivity option at all - I couldn't change that setting, only the receiver side. Someone else mentioned this too, but I went through the menu a bunch of times trying to find that option and couldn't. @@SolarFlightPro First of all, thanks for your review. I've just ordered the receiver, transmitter for lavaliere and plug-on XLR transmitter. They all have a black label , including the transmitter, according to the pictures. `I ordered them before watching your review but am not worried at all as I bought from Amazon UK so if there is any problem then return/refund will be very fast and very easy. As a matter of fact, I did return for a full refund two headphones to them about six months after the purchase. No problem. The two options you mentioned don't have plug-on XLR transmitters so if you need to work with a handheld mic then those two mics are not an option. The GO II handheld adapter is too noisy to the touch, looks cheap and would make many reporters feel uncomfortable as they are not familiar with a handheld mic which looks like a toy as it is not really a handheld mic. What are your thoughts on the Deity Pocket Wireless with plug-on XLR transmitter and the Godox WMic S 1 Pro with plug-on XLR transmitter? I ordered the Sarmonic to replace the Deity because I am very disappointed in its receiver . It doesn't have a headphone port ! I just can't believe that. I use my iPhone 13 Pro to shoot news and can't possibly shoot an interview without monitoring the audio. Literally all wireless receivers I've seen have a headphone port, even when they are half the size of Deity's pocket receiver such as the Synco receiver and the Mackie receiver. I found a solution but it turned out that is a half baked one: Rode AI interface. This because the sound I hear in the headphone whilst using that Rode interface is not the sound being recorded to my phone. The recorded sound is much lower, to the point of being unusable. The only way to fix it is to boost the audio considerably in the XLR transmitter but I really don't like doing that, especially when I have to go as high as +24 db. I am no audio expert but just don't like the idea of artificial gains. If I connect the Deity receiver to my phone using a ugreen lightning to audio adapter then I don't need to add gain and the audio is better but I can't monitor it! So I am looking for a replacement for the Deity. I am happy with the Godox although I like the size and practicability of the Deity. Besides , Deity's XLR transmitter is much better than Godox's. So, again, what are your thoughts on the Deity pocket with XLR transmitter and the Godox? I would appreciate knowing your view as I am still choosing which kit to use. I will carry two with me because I would never go out for a shooting without an audio back up. If I am working with my broadcast camera then the on camera shotgun is the back up. But I do need a complete kit to use as a back if shooting with my iPhone.

Great review. I actually have two sets of this product. The first iteration of this product , uwmic10 (using the 600mhz spectrum) which is still legal in my country and I love this kit. But I didn’t get the xlr transmitter (Instead I have the Saramonic xlr recorder…same look/design). So I decided to get the black version so I can get the xlr transmitter, and experiencing what you describe. It is atrocious. Interestingly enough, the regular transmitter is not too bad, but the xlr is unusable which is disappointing since I have such a good experience with the first ever version. …And to add ..had a job the other day and the client seemed to have dropped the xlr transmitter (heard the thump, but did not actually see and nothing was said, so can’t confirm), but when I got home, the xlr transmitter screen only displays half the info across all menus. So much for ruggedness. Anyways, keep up the good work.

@@kenyontech Hi, I have since purchased the newer UWMIC9s which is awesome. I have both versions now (UWMIC9 - black edition & UWMIC9s). I actively use both heavily in productions and non have let me down except for the XLR transmitter piece. I love using the S series for streaming because of how great the internal battery lasts. And I use the regular UWMIC9 for interviews and controlled environment because of the flexibility to change channels for best reception and strength of the signals. So I would not feel discouraged or deterred from going with this brand at all. And they even have a newer model, the UWMIC9s mini and I can definitely vouch for the "s" series. they have not let me down.

I've used mine on many productions over the last 3 years and have stood up well. The biggest down side is their plug in power. At only 1.79v (I took the back off and measured the transistor that sends bias voltage to the mic with a multimeter) this is significant because it means you can't upgrade to more expensive pro lav mics. Most semi pro and pro radio body packs supply 5v or more in case you want to buy nicer lavs. Saramonic have locked the customer to using their crappy lavs. I bought some Countryman lavs to use with my Saramonic and they sound trash. because they are underpowered.
@SolarFlightPro
@SolarFlightPro Жыл бұрын
That's VERY interesting. I believe I was using their lavs for most of my initial experiences with them - then I used a sennheiser MKE-2 Lav when I bought my sennheiser kit to replace these. I had the same dropout issue with both, though, and the XLR transmitter is definitely overdriving the NTG-3.

@SolarFlightPro
@SolarFlightPro 3 жыл бұрын
The receiver (when set to stereo) will send out input one to the left channel and input 2 to the right channel on your camera/recorder. It will be dependent on your recorder if you can split those onto separate tracks, but they will be panned completely away from each other.

@@SolarFlightPro that response is the worst answer one can get. to be honest, I lost my trust in Saramonic. I can understand if the price is like random brand from china, 10-20$ cheap stuff. but we're talking about hundreds of dollars here. that answer is unacceptable. as if Saramonic is just a company that sells random quality product with mid-range price. That's even worse than that random product from china. they make us feels that the brand Saramonic is not dependable because of it's price. they said it themselves.

I tried the newer system and only the bodypack transmitter has the attenuation option. Even with that option the “S” sounds terrible. I personally think that the hardware is very nice and capable, however the software was written by drunk developers. Too many illogical things. From Menu order to button functions on the camera plug-on xlr receiver. As much as I love the hardware I’ll be returning my system just because it has unacceptable mistakes in the software. Thank you for your video.

Haha if enough people express interest, maybe! I've got my Sennheiser kit I'm working on a full review of at the moment. I'm using UwMic9 with yellow border and I still have the Mic Sensitivity option :) So it's even more confusing than just border color :) But I experienced this signal dropouts you were talking about. But in my case usually changing the channels so A was quite far away from B helped.

I always suggest getting a boom first! Our NTG-3 served us very well for 5 years or so before we ever had a wireless lav system. I'm currently working on reviewing my Sennheiser G4 500 series, so hopefully I can get that out quick enough that it's helpful to you as well!

I have used these inside offices for years but was just filming outside Kings Cross Station. The dropouts rendered this kit unusable. I tried all of the 'hunt for cleanest channel', settings, to no avail. I have one TX which is the black type, the sound is way tinnier. It feels less punchy and useable. I need a better pack. I am probably going to go for he G4s.
@SolarFlightPro
@SolarFlightPro 9 ай бұрын
I got rid of these right after the review, I actually ended up getting the G4s. I've actually found myself using the Rode Wireless Go II more often than my Sennheiser kit because it's quicker to set up. Those Wireless Pro kit would be great for if you only use two mics, with that 32bit float internal backup. It's a way to save at least a thousand dollars over a full Sennheiser kit, assuming you're getting the option with the boom mic transmitter as well. At this point, with all the developments in the market, I've definitely just written off Saramonic almost entirely.
