I have a used banjo with 30 years of grime and oxidation on it ... until today. Because of these videos I had the courage to take it apart, clean it and reassemble it. Looks new now! Thanks for the awesome tutorial!

I've been playing the banjo for thirty-one years and have always fought with the bridge being in the right place. If it's not in place properly, the instrument will not tune properly. I learned a handy tidbit from you today. Thank you very much.

I was not optimistic about the results I was going to get as I had tightened the heads of the two banjos previously. I am a believer now. I cannot thank you enough.

I have two Epiphone MB-250 banjos that sounded exactly alike. I did everything except remove the co-ordinator rods. I did need to lightly sand the top of the wooden rim to remove some light slops of varnish. I reversed the head to hide the logo. There was a slight ding in the rim on the head. I dismissed how important that was. The thing that I absolutely did verbatim was to tighten the head in a criss-cross fashion very slowly and deliberately. I put it back together WOW! WOW! THANKS

Thanks for the series! I just bought a RK-R35 and the setup is terrible, so I'll follow this and re-do it. A couple of questions, though, that you don't address. 1. When should you check the truss rod, to make sure that the neck curvature is correct? Mine is pretty far from straight. I no it shouldn't be exactly straight, but how do I check, and when in the rebuild sequence? 2. When do you set the action? In the video, you put the resonator on, then string it. Wouldn't you string it and set the action before putting the resonator on? Any guidance on how low/high to set the action? 3. How do you decide on the tailpiece tension? Thanks again, and look forward to your answers.

P.S. By the way, the 19th fret is actually less accurate, due to the use of equal temperament. The only interval for which the harmonic is exactly perfectly in tune with the fretted note is the octave; all of the other intervals are fudged a little to make them add up to 12 equally spaced tones. It is more accurate than the perfect fifth! So you are 100% justified in using the 12th fret!

Thanks a lot for all that info! I'm living abroad and returning to the states for a short vacation, and I hope to bring back my 5-string when I return (i.e., flying out of the U.S.). Someone suggested disassembly as a way of avoiding the stresses of trying to carry it on the plane. Any thoughts? The individual parts are much smaller, but it would seem they're stronger when they're all together than separate.

I’m curious what the previous setup would have sounded like with the tightened head - specifically because im curious how the tone ring fit affects the tone

Hello Sir. Is there Any Chance that their is TAB for the tune you play at the end of this? There's a couple of licks in there that I'm unfamiliar with - and it sounds great. Thanks, -Dave

Suddenly the tailpiece that was loose got tightened but you don't show the tightening of it.

The tension of the strings 'tightened' it, the tailpiece shouldn't be snugged up against the tension band but it is on a lot of factory and even shop setup banjos.
