Liam was born with multiple drugs in his system and quickly went into withdrawal. Today he is diagnosed with autism, anxiety, depression, ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Doctors also found that his brain is malformed. Liam wants others to know that he is trying to control his impulses, but it can be difficult.

One of the main things I hope this video illustrates is that Liam is a victim. The exposure to drugs while he was developing caused his brain to become malformed. As a result, he now struggles with anger and impulse control. Children with ODD are often labeled as "bad" children, but it is much more complex than that. Also, I just want to point out that it is entirely possible for a child to be diagnosed with ODD without exposure to drugs in utero.

I've had a kid with ODD in one of my jobs, and theirs was due to severe abuse. One of the sweetest kids I've ever met, SUPER self aware, and they were working SO hard to grow from their past. The fact that Liam said "if I could find a human friend" broke my heart. He seems like a very sweet, smart child, and he's very well spoken. I hope he finds some wonderful friends soon.

@@kerafyrm_lol that’s the limit you put on yourself. Rules are meant to be broken and as you get older you have to learn how to not get caught doing it, we do it everyday. Do you not slow down when you see a cop in traffic in hopes that he doesn’t catch you going 10 over and then immediately speed up when you’ve passed him? Most of us abide by the rules when it’s convenient to keep us out of trouble but would break them if they stood between us and something that really matters, again we see that everyday. Have you every analyzed what rules are and what it means to have rules? Who comes up with the rules? In our case it would be a governing body, what exactly qualifies them above anyone else to determine what can or can’t be done in life? How egotistical do we have to be as humans to sincerely believe we can make rules that tell people how they have to live? When you look at the wonder that is life and existence how on earth do you get convinced that rules that are man made get to govern any of how this works? Following rules simply implies that it is ok to have someone else’s view imposed upon you and that you have to fall in line with that, I don’t need there to be a law to say that I shouldn’t harm someone because I understand that on my own and can govern myself accordingly. Nobody needs a law to tell them they should or shouldn’t do something because we already possess that ability to determine those things naturally, if you are unable to see right from wrong on your own then it’s time for some introspection

Im not completely sure of what they mean but from my own research and experience that a lot of the time ODD is used by parents to neglect their own place in their child’s behavior and emotional responses. For me it was used as a way to discredit my questioning and concerns about my education or my autistic meltdowns and just being defiant or just me “discrediting authority”. A lot of people with autism and adhd disagree with the diagnosis in general but i think it just needs to be diagnosed less frequently because its obviously a thing that people deal with on a Neurological level but it also agree that its very often sed as a way to silence neurodivergent voices. I hope this gives some insight but please let be know if I’m misunderstanding

I really hope that this mom has some sort of system for herself. A support group of parents that also have children with ODD might be comforting because they are dealing with the same things. Other parents that won't say she's a bad mom or not strict enough. Instead of judging they'll support her. She's doing her best to support her son and help him in any way she can. In fact, I was told one time that my child was one of the hardest children her therapist had ever had to work with. I sadly understand this boys sense of humor. He uses the horrible things he went through as a joke to help take back the power he felt he lost at a very young age. My mom was never a drug user when she was pregnant, but my father was an addict. I lost him a few years after I was born. I use the trauma and pain I had as jokes to make myself feel better about what happened. Well, if he’d stop thrashing his devices…. But this is what many here don’t understand or can’t seem to acknowledge: ODD has clear neuro-biological roots, which alter the neural pathways and connections. Especially significant are the issues involving certain aspects of the cortex. He acts before he considers the results of his actions-this is beyond his control. The adoptive mother is not “making money” from this neurodivergent young man’s disability. The string of dx’s likely came about due to the school setting attempting to get services (assistance/therapy) for him. In an educational setting, they’re not true medical dx’s, but “eligibility codes”-- of which only less than a handful will offer the student any extra assistance. ODD is very serious; it’s a dx that is given which is usually indicative of extremely serious disorders which cannot be placed on minors. He is not receiving sufficient support nor services. The diligent mother goes so far as to plead for assistance from her State’s Representative-he fails in his duty by refusing to REPRESENT (his job) her child’s lack of educational support by throwing the onus onto the “taxpayers”. This misguided excuse, the over-played, ubiquitous worn-out trope, yet still the most effective and popular in the US, is used like an old fly-swatter…to humiliate those in need. Remember this: Unless you leave this planet young and in an instant, you-too-will someday be in need, unless you’re in the .01%

I really appreciate how Chris was able to hone in on asking questions about the way Liam decides and makes choices. Or in what he prefers or thinks. Liam made me laugh out loud multiple times and it is evident he is loving by nature as he kept kissing Larry and directly tells his Mom he's going to miss her. It is important for him to feel safe and in charge. Emotional regulation can be difficult for a lot of adults, let alone a really smart youth being told how different he is versus appreciating him for his strengths and capabilities. A similar issue occurs with people with down syndrome. If you baby them and do everything for them their entire life, they grow up to be extremely dependent and unable to do anything for themselves. On the opposite end, if you raise them as a "normal" person (with some exceptions due to mental and physical limitations) they'll grow into very independent and capable people. I've seen both sides many times, the parents mean well and are doing their best, but their parenting has a crucial effect on how their child turns out.

Liam's mom could also meet other parents on line. There are many of us with children who share at least some of Liam's challenges! It would be good for her to speak with other parents who've found ways to avoid some of the conflict. Sometimes, with some children, just asking a different way can be all that's necessary. Sometimes, to-do lists ('star charts', for example) with lists of tasks that need to be done - in conjunction with some sort of reward (a game together, an offer to talk about Roblox (or another preferred topic) - can be helpful. Sometimes they're not. Sharing both, the useful and the less-so, can be helpful to any parent - especially a parent of an intelligent, opinionated child like Liam (and like my son as well).

I know the kid has a lot of issues and as a perent its definitly good to differienciate these issues to bad behavior but i think beeing a little strict might go a long way. I can only admire this woman for beeing able to go through this everyday but when it comes to the emotional manipulation i think its important to enforce rules at these moments even if the kid is disabled. Its the same with people justifying devious actions from autistic people. Strictness goes a long way. You dont need to be as hard on the kid as you would a normal kid but even with all those disorders you can understand if you arendoing something bad. ODD was nearly a breaking point for me to deal with. Finding patience and understanding is extremely difficult when raising a child with strong ODD. I was fortunate to have a good child psychologist which made a world of difference over the years. My child is now much lower on the ODD spectrum now. She had the self knowledge by around age 11 to realize the issues with ODD and she worked hard to understand it and learn to manage it. It could improve with professional support.

I hope the mother also seeks mental health support. She's incredibly loving, caring, and hopeful. But she also needs help as a caretaker of a child with ODD. I truly hope for Liam to do well and grow up to become a loving and grateful man.

I thought that too.. I'm sure he's a handful but I feel like bringing the diagnosis up isn't a good way to go about things. Like a self fulfilling prophecy.. I feel like you shouldn't tell kids too much about this stuff until they get older and have a higher level of understanding.. otherwise it could limit them

Yeah but he IS different, he has like 7 disorders working at once. I think he is kind of forcing it (with the football helmet randomly for example). But he’s most likely doing that as a result of being isolated & treated as different just for being treated as different for being himself. He’s also rlly young, it’s a common trait for kids his age. At his age I did the same thing

That was my exact thought, then I saw your comment. I think these things could be holding him back. Maybe they should've kept some of this from him until he was older. By telling him he's different, it seems to influence his actions.

you can see that while Liam has been diagnosed with a lot of things, he is also incredibly smart! The fact that he was on Chat GPT in this interview and wanting to save up his allowance to buy the Meta VR. He has insane interest in technology and I see a great career in that field for him! I think with time, he can learn to regulate and manage his emotions. He is also lucky to have his mother. His mother is saving his life - don't think he knows it yet though. If Liam had the wrong caregiver he could easily become his worst self but with the caring guidance and love she brings, I can see him going to a much better future :)

one belief I have is that it's possible to build video games that both interest children of high intelligence (and defiance) or any other social disorder that can help them navigate their emotions into a resolvable space, that eventually encourages them to be apart of reality and life in a way that they can handle. at least this is my dream.

I was the neurodivergent kid in school that would spot the other ostracized kids and scoop them up, so it hurts my heart seeing this kid struggling with friends. Liam or Liam’s mom if you see this, know that the world is absolutely filled with people like us, it just seems scattered sometimes but I promise he will find friends and people just like him in his life. Take it from a grown up with many of the same issues, over time I was able to fill my world with people that understand.

Liam is brilliantly intelligent. He speaks like a person twice his age when answering Chris's questions. He's also incredibly self-aware for his age. It's almost like he's got the mind of an older child but is operating out of a brain of a much younger one. Like putting a top of the line processor in a 10 year old computer. I am sure they will even out someday as long as he continues to get this kind of love and support from mom, therapists, doctors, and school. Make good choices, Liam. You are a great kid and you will find your people someday. Mom, you are a saint. You are a fantastic parent, the best parent. Its clear the love you have for Liam conquers all obstacles.

I was a little like Liam. I had a head injury as a baby and I’ve got severe ADHD on top of that. I had a disdain for rules as well. I benefitted MASSIVELY from after school art classes with a very understanding art teacher who let me paint whatever I wanted. Art is for rule-breakers and he let me learn on my own while sneaking some guidance in there. If it weren’t for my dirt bike and my art classes I’m pretty sure I would’ve ended up in jail. I am now an art teacher hoping to impact kids how my precious art teacher did for me. Liam is SMART and funny. Once he finds an outlet or two I think he will figure it out.

This. I didn't have a brain injury but did/do have severe ADHD. And Art saved me. The world you can create, and the way you can sort through this world all through your creativity really helps. It fosters mindfulness, is a form of meditation, and truly helps with trauma processing. Ad from one special needs Mom to another..Stay strong Momma.. God doesn't give us the children we want but the children we need.

​@@ItsBrit Same! I was also struggling with severe depression (not sure if it was a result of the ADHD or just separate). I had two art classes my senior year of highschool with the same teacher. Those classes were my refuge, and her patience and understanding for me really saved me that year.

Art is about breaking rules, that's a great point. I feel Liam probably likes the sports he's in. Hockey has rules, but it's also exhilarating. And if no one else is around, ice skating doesn't have rules
