Born in ‘62, but I feel the same. I consider myself as Gen Jones - the generation from 1955 to 1965. Our fathers didn’t serve in WW II, we weren’t part of the draft, we lived through Watergate, the oil crisis, and stagflation. Some of us were latchkey kids and by the time we came of age, most of us didn’t have the economic opportunities and resources older boomers had.

I've felt more Gen X definitely. But I think we are a sub group. I've heard that we're Generation Jones. I do think around 1960 to around1968 were a group that had it's own definite experiences. Probably late Gen X doesn't feel the same as early Gen X also. Just like I don't feel the same as the Baby Boomers who were born in the 40's.

This topic has been discussed by sociologists since the early 1980s. The demarcation point that differentiates the two generations has been the experience of the Vietnam war. Baby Boomers generally could be drafted into the conflict. Gen Xers were too young to be drafted. It is like the debate between John McCain and Barack Obama. McCain supporters asked why Obama didn’t serve in Vietnam. Obama supporters noted that he was born in 1962 and was a child during the whole time. As an academic, I believe those born between 1960-1965 can be fluidly put into either generation. (I was also born in 1963). The hard line demarcation of 1964 is generally used by journalists who don’t understand that generational differences are not set in stone.

Several questions have already been put forth. 1) Can you program, or have you ever programmed, a VCR? 2) Have you ever ridden your bicycle barefoot? (Bonus points if you had the pedals with the metal spikes for "grip") 3) Have you have participated in a roman candle fight? 4) Did you ever own a stereo system that had a volume knob that went to 11? Any additional information will expedite the Council's decision. Thank your for your interest. Now I have to go fight off the monkey with lawn darts, so if you'll excuse me. P.S. There is nothing wrong with the Baby Boomers. Let's be real, though, Baby Boomers born in the late 50s were out with the kids born in the early 60s. Everybody ran the neighborhood from sun-up to sun-down, with stops for lunch and bathroom breaks. We all drank from garden hoses. We would all just as soon knock the crap out of somebody if they continue with nefarious BS for too long. We relate to our couple-of-year-younger siblings more than we do to the much-older siblings and cousins. At any rate...ageism is just as pernicious as racism and sexism. Respect everybody, unless and until they prove an a$$hole, and then just blame it on THEM...not their tribe! Edit: So I never heard about Generation Jones, but that sure fits us late Baby Boomers better than just plunking us down as a Boomer. We are the cohort who watched the Vietnam War LIVE on TV during dinner (until a couple of soldiers were blown up in front of us all, and CBS decided that wasn't a great idea). I remember coming home from school to catch part of the Watergate hearings. I was a very young child when Kennedy was assassinated. I remember walking into a shop with my mom and the discussion the ladies had about his being shot in a parade. I remembered thinking how odd it was because the parade in our town was held in spring, and here we all were, cold in our winter coats. In case anybody is wondering...Gen X got their toughness from Jones! We invented the bad-a**ery that X appropriated and taught them how to do it. We coped with the worst recession in the 20th century, competed endlessly for our jobs because the economy was crap, and struggled to buy homes...then, in 2008, to keep them. Jones struggled...and we do not want to hear that sh*t about how easy we had it. We didn't. And, PS, most of us have had careers where we had to know technology and how to pivot on a dime, so...take your ageism and.....!

Gas was only $.50-75 cents a gallon. YES my parents put me on their car insurance. Got a part-time job. Had an apartment after graduation. Blessed to get grants and a few minor scholarships for college. Married a military man, traveled the world, had my one and only birth child overseas.(adopted 2 more children stateside) Times didn't get hard until around age 37. Husband died in car accident. Navigating learning how to be a single parent and 1 income was a rude awakening. Now that I'm considered a senior citizen times are really hard. Compound that with serious health issues is no picnic. I'm blessed to have great children., grandchildren who are close and thick as thieves 😂. Even have a great grandson who lights up my life. Survival in these days are for the fittest as it's said. For all ages, young to the old. My family wants the multi generational house and I understand why. Financial beneficial. As for me, I'm keeping my senior 1brm apartment and do a lot of visiting. 1963 - I remember always being classified as a boomer. No changes. However, I remember a Time or Newsweek article in the late 80’s classifying 1960-1964 as “tweeners” - a confused blend of the two classifications. My guess is it’s the case with every line between generations.

Born in the last quarter of the last year of 'Boomers' - and I've never felt like a Boomer. My first summer job was data entry. We literally tore pages out of a phone book, input all the info, and moved on to the next one. Yes I helped put everyone's info online - the horror! However, I did have a WWII vet as a parent, and my mom was just 4 years younger than my dad. My brother, who is the oldest, is 19-1/2 years older than me and a Vietnam era vet. There's two sisters between us who were born in the 50's. So I have a great appreciation for boomer music from Elvis to the Doors, to AC/DC, etc. But the my high school and college years were all about Journey, Foreigner, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, and of course Prince and Madonna! And I was definitely a free-range kid, playing outside all day around the neighborhood. I too just recently discovered there was a name for us, and I finally feel 'seen.' 😉

Born in March 1963, turned 61 last month. I agree with your assessment and have been saying this for years. Early on in the generation naming game, being born before the destruction of Camelot was the cutoff, a designation that calls me a boomer by a few months. But I have little to no recollection of that or active reports/friends lost from the battle fields of Viet Nam. That describes my oldest brother's generation, born in the early fifties. I was a latchkey kid before the phrase was coined. My bike was my freedom and my parents were fine as long as I showed up for supper, and not brought there by the police. I'm 100% GenX. Now leave me alone.

I would throw in '62 when I was born. I used to joke those of us graduating high school in '80-82 at least had the decency to kill Disco. It's a age group of transition. The fall of 1980 was the last semester my engineering program taught how to use the slide rule. Couple years later, you had to own a personal computer just to get in. I did play in the mud during the Summer of Love, but it was in the backyard around the plastic splash pool.

Once upon a time, your age bracket was known as Generation Jones. There are lots of ways to define Gen X, but growing up where I lived, most people my age had grandparents who did or were old enough fight in WWII and parents who did or were old enough to fight in Vietnam and go to Woodstock. Edit to add: I think cohorts aren't that precise. Not only do different people of the same generation (e.g. within families) have children spread out over multiple years, but they also spread out their children over several years. I think a good rule of thumb for a cohort is how many years-worth of students you know in high school. Since most people go to a 4 year high school, they know seniors when they were freshmen and knew freshmen when they were seniors, which is a 7-year spread or a cohort based on people who actually know each other. If you allow 1 degree of separation on each side, for a friend-of-a-friend/relative you extend that to 13 years. This seems more sensible than assuming 18-20 years for minimum birth cycles. Then, it might make sense to think of there being two cycles offset from each other, like a left foot then right foot progression, with strides overlapping by about half. This means there should be a generation between Boomers and Xers. Though to be fair, there were so many boomers that Millennials are their kids too, messing up the progression. This is just my idea though.

Anyone within a couple years of the dividing line are *_cusp_* kids, and can either lean toward one side of the line or the other, or smoothly transition back and forth between both sides as needed. And this goes for all of the "defined" generations. As a '77 model GenXer myself, I feel very firmly planted (most of the time) within the bounds of GenX, but I do have the occasional moment where I find myself toeing that GenY line. But this may be a result of some of the company I've kept over the years, often folks who were several years younger than me. We are, after all, products of our environments, to include the people with whom we surround ourselves.

I was born in '62. Never fit into the boomer vibe and never understood 'participation' trophies. I definitely identify with GenX. In the summer, we left in the morning and played baseball, built forts, rode our bikes without pads, helmets or shoes. We waded through swamps collecting leaches, frogs, salamanders and other insects. Came home for dinner and then back out until the street lights came on or the 'old man' whistled. In the winter, we flooded the street, played hockey, made snowmen and dug tunnels through the snow mounds. A 'play date' was walking down the street knocking on doors until we collected everyone in the neighborhood. We played hard and we fought hard. Their were no fucks given.

That’s because baby boomers were doing that stuff before GenX. Drinking out hose pipes staying out to the lights came on, riding our bikes all over the neighborhood exploring or being home alone. Boomers were already doing this as evidenced in historical photos and videos and old tv shows. I’m a proud baby boomer our generation marched for civil rights laws and the last generation forced into war and lived through segregation but were also the first to integrate schools and businesses we took the hard knocks and paved a way so GenX and future generations could easily integrate and have a more peaceful prosperous life. So when GenX comes off like they are tough it’s just tougher than the generations following them not the generations before them.

I lost my house key ONCE and to this day I carry a big, jangly key ring that you cannot fail to hear fall . As a child of '63 I've always considered us the ? generation. We're too evolved for the boomers, but the GenX crowd thinks we're dinosaurs. We're the ones who got to witness and experience the last fleeting moments classic rock and the spirit of freedom that came from the hippie boomers, and also witnessed the birth of spaceflight and the electronic revolution from our infancy. We didn't grow up with VCRs, we got them while we were growing up, and we learned and adapted to using them. Questions for the GenXers: 1) have you ever patched an inner tube to fix a bike tire? 2) what types of chemicals did you get to play with while unsupervised? 3) did you ever learn to throw a beer can into the back of a pickup while legally drinking and driving down the highway? Questions for the Boomers: 1) Have you learned how computer files are organized yet? 2) How many megabytes are in a terabyte? 3) Who showed you how to use youTube?

My kids get it. When they want to learn something practical, like cooking, I point at the pots and say go for it. Go play outside was like the weekend theme song. I’m still super sarcastic, straight from the hip. My husband is older, a Boomer workaholic, can’t understand my sarcasm. Literally, totally confused by it. Millennials in his family also draw a blank at sarcasm, and vintage TV references. Things go very quiet. 🦗

I wasn't sure but I went with GenX because that's my childhood. I grew up free-range walkin' around barefoot all over the place. You know, until the pavement got too hot. I grew up in the time of the hip hugger bell bottoms fashion trend, on a side note 🤨 they came back re-branded as low rise wide leg. I don't know if that branding is still trending I grew in the time of the cut-offs, the original Daisy Duke. Watched American Bandstand, Soul Train, Carol Burnett, Flip Wilson...Captain Kangaroo. 😅 Naw, that ain't Boomer that's straight up GenX. Like Grease, it's got move, its got meaning. We didn't take the pressure and throw away our originality. In the time that I've been part of this conversation I've with wrestle which am I. I came up Boomer with GenX mentality. But it wasnt quite right. In a thread elsewhere on this topic someone called themselves BoomerX I liked it and used it too. But as I reminsce ain't no Boomer in all that. "Sneakin' out the back door although I told you not to go outside" is more than song lyrics. We were sneaky. We're not lost, we escaped. So, I conclude given all that, I am heart and soul through and through GenX. "Keep Feeling Fascination" y'all 😉
